The central mountainous region of Papua is home to the highland peoples who live on trees in tree houses, and practice pig husbandry and sweet potato cultivation. The lowland peoples live in swampy and malarial coastal regions, and live by hunting the abundant game, and gathering. Some of the many West Papuan tribal languages are related to others, but some are unique. It is believed that Papuans share a common ancestry with Africa, dating back to the initial human migration out of Africa around 100,000 years ago. In fact, research suggests that Papuan tribes have a significant connection with Africa, with studies indicating that Papuan languages show similarities with African languages, particularly from the Niger-Congo language family, Genetic studies reveal that Papuans have genetic affinities with African populations, particularly from the western and central regions, Cultural practices, such as skull deformation and nose piercing, are shared between Papuan tribes and some African groups, Archaeological findings suggest trade and cultural exchanges occurred between Papuan and African societies, dating back thousands of years. The Papuans are divided into several clans and each of these clans have fascinating and unique practices. Some of these clans are: The Baining Fire Dancers The Baining people are most famous for their fire dance tradition, which is performed to commemorate the births and deaths of family members and the coming of age for young men. The ritual sees the tribe's spirit men dance barefoot over a roaring fire to hypnotizing drum beats and chanting. They paint their skin white and wear huge kavat masks made from cane and barkcloth, which are painted with big coiling eyes and protruding lips. Spectators can feel the heat from meters away, so seeing the men jump and twirl through the flames is a sight to behold. The Crocodile Men The Sepik River is home to some of the world’s largest fresh and saltwater crocs. The men from the Chambri tribe of the East Sepik province, also known as the Crocodile Men, are famous for the skin scarification on their backs, arms and chests, which resemble the scales of a crocodile. The crocodile is highly symbolic in Chambri culture and young men undergo this painful ceremony as an initiation into manhood. The Asaro Mudmen Hailing from the Asaro tribe of the Eastern Highlands, the Asaro Mudmen are famous for their clay body paint, large mud masks and lengthy bamboo finger extensions. Legend has it that the Asaro were once under attack by another tribe but, with their spectacularly spooky bilas, managed to frighten them off by tricking them into thinking they were spirits of the dead. You can see the Asaro Mudmen reenact this legend at the Goroka Cultural Show, The Papuan’s longest running festival, which takes place every September. The Huli Wigmen The Huli Wigmen are from the Huli tribe of the Hela province and Southern Highlands. As part of the initiation into adulthood, teenage boys leave home and live with elders in the jungle. To grow healthy locks quickly, they follow a strict diet, wet their hair with holy water three times a day and sleep in a special sleeping position. This usually takes around 18 months, and they're forbidden to have any contact with women, including their mothers during this time. Once their hair is long enough, the wig master cuts it off and weaves it into a wig, which signifies that the young men are now ready to have a family. The women of the Orokaiva tribe Women from the Orokaiva tribe of the Oro province are famous for their facial tattoos. When young women reach full maturity, usually at the age of 18, they leave their village and go live in huts with female elders. The tattooing process can take several months as it's done in small sections every day using thorns and a natural ink made from charcoal and water, a technique that is passed down through the generations. Facial tattoos symbolize that a woman is now ready for marriage. The Samburu people are the true gem that represent the African culture because of certain standards they’ve upheld for years. The Samburu tribe, is a semi-nomadic tribe. Only the Samburu people are still very traditional and have not parted with old customs as compared to their neighbours, the Maasai Tribe. Cattle, as well as goats, sheep and camels, play a vital role in the Samburu way of life and culture. The Samburu are highly dependent on their livestock for survival. Their diet comprises mostly of milk and occasionally blood from their cows. The blood is accrued by slightly cutting the jugular of the cow, and draining the blood into a cup. The wound is then promptly sealed with hot ash. Meat is only served on special occasions. The Samburu people's diet is also supplemented with vegetables, roots and tubers that are made into a soup. Samburu land is mostly dry barren land, and the Samburu tribe have to relocate to be certain their cattle have enough food. Every few weeks the tribe will change location to find fresh grazing grounds. Huts are constructed using hide, mud, and grass mats strung over poles. A fence is built around the mud huts for protection from wild animals. The Samburu tribe settlements are called manyattas. The Samburu usually dwell in groups of five to ten families. Traditionally Samburu men look after their cattle and they are also responsible for the overall safety of the tribe. Samburu women are responsible for gathering vegetables and roots, caring for their children and collecting water. Samburu girls usually help their mothers with domestic chores. The Samburu are a gerontocracy, a system where the most elderly rule the tribe. It is the elders that decide when ceremonies will occur, such as weddings and circumcisions. Entry into womanhood and manhood is marked with a circumcision ceremony. Men and women are only able to get married once they have been circumcised, as prior to that they are still considered as children. Once a boy has been circumcised he is now considered a Moran, meaning warrior. The men are placed into age sets, and as a group move from one social position to another. From child to Moran, to junior elder and finally to elder. The traditional dress of the Samburu tribe is a striking red cloth wrapped like a skirt and a white sash. This is adorned with many colorful beaded earrings, bracelets, anklets and necklaces. Each piece of jewellery worn represents the status of the wearer. Dancing is a significant part of Samburu culture. Their dancing is similar to that of the Maasai people with men dancing in a circle and jumping high from a standing position. Traditionally, the Samburu tribe does not use any instrument to accompany their dancing and singing. The Samburu people are under pressure from their government to settle into more permanent villages. They have resisted this proposal thus far, since a permanent settlement would disrupt their entire way of life. And it will be difficult to grow and maintain crops on a permanent site. And Palm wine also called sum-sum, meaning Kill Me Quick: A wine made from palm trees, with varying levels of alcohol content depending on the duration of fermentation. Banjul is The Gambia's economic and administrative centre and includes the Central Bank of the Gambia. Peanut processing is the country's principal industry, but beeswax, palm wood, palm oil, and skins and hides are also shipped from the port of Banjul. Banjul is also the home of The Gambia Technical Training Institute. GTTI is engaged in a partnership with non-profit organization, Power Up Gambia to develop a solar energy training program. Banjul houses The University of The Gambia, which was founded in 1999 and other great international schools. The injera pieces in fir fir become really moist and fall apart, quite sour, and also very juicy. The sponginess of the injera soaks up a lot of liquid. It’s served cool, sometimes even with ice cubes in it. It’s definitely an interesting dish to try in Ethiopia. 3. Shiro wat Along with injera, shiro wat, is one of the most widely consumed dishes in Ethiopia. Shiro wat is made from chickpea and broad bean flour, mixed with garlic and onions, and made into a thick, almost paste like substance. Kind of like refried beans but smoother. Non-vegetarian versions of shiro often includes lots of butter, but the vegan version usually includes a little olive oil instead. This is one meal you don’t want to skip. 4. Kitfo Kitfo, a dish made from raw minced beef, is one of the most beloved local dishes in the entire country. It’s a food that’s often eaten on special occasions, with good friends or family. You can either order leb leb, which is very slightly cooked, or the normal kitfo which is completely raw. The minced meat is mixed with mitmita, a blend of spices, and niter kibbeh, the Ethiopian herbed butter. Kitfo is considered a delicacy, and is generally held in high regard. This means that Saudi Arabia’s land mass is about 5 times bigger than that of Morocco. - Religion wise, Morocco has Islam as its dominant religion, having 99% of its population as Sunni Muslims and 0.1% as Shia Muslims.
