Susanoo is the god of storms in Shinto religion and represents the physical world. Born from the primordial creator god Izanagi, he was given a reputation for being something of a trickster but has recently become related with love and marriage. The image of Susanoo is rather complex and contradictory. In the Kojiki, Susanoo is often depicted with wild hair blowing in the winds while fighting an eight-headed sea monster with a sword, the Totsuka no tsurugi. His chaotic mood and disheveled appearance are direct reflections of his status as the god of storms, and his name is given in the Kojiki and he is named in the Nihon Shoki as Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki agree in their descriptions of Susanoo as the son of Izanagi, he was born at the same time as Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. To punish Susanoo, the pantheon imposed upon him a fine of a thousand tables, and his father expelled him from heaven. From this expulsion comes one of the most famous stories about the deity. The Kami went to Japan in the province of Izumo where he came across a couple absolutely terrified. Susanoo was told that their distress was caused by Yamata-no-Orochi, a terrible eight-headed sea creature that was coming to eat their young daughter. The creature had previously eaten seven of the couple’s daughters in sacrifice, so the desperate parents were now down to their last child whose life was threatened by the beast, lady Kushinada was soon coming upon her final days. For the sake of saving her life, Susanoo turned Kushinada into a comb to keep her safe into his hair, then struck a bargain with her parents that if he gets rid of the monstrous creature he could marry the beautiful girl. The Haitian people believe that the first man buried in a cemetery becomes the manifestation of its guardian who is reality the Baron, an entity considered to hold knowledge of the dead and the underworld. Baron Samedi often comes into the world as a beggar with a unique presence, but he is depicted as a tall black man wearing a formal attire which includes a black tuxedo and a top hat. Along with his iconic cane, the baron often appears with his face painted to resemble that of a skull, no wonder why in some cases he is depicted as having a skull instead of a human face. The Baron is represented by phallic symbols and noted for obscenities and debauchery, with a particular fondness for tobacco and alcohol. There are few symbols associated with the Baron as well and these include coffins, black goats, roosters and skeletons. Even the colours black and purple which appear in his clothing have become to be related with this powerful Lwa. To understand the Baron and his powers, we must first understand the religion that he was born into. Voodoo is a monotheistic religion originated from French colonies and common in Haiti and New Orleans, Voodoo brings together Catholic and African beliefs to form a unique set of rituals including dolls and symbolic drawings. The practitioners of Voodoo believe in one supreme god whom they call Bondye. The Lwa are the primary spirits of Voodoo, acting as intermediaries between humans and the supreme god Bondye. The Lwas are identical to the Orisha, the spirits from the Yoruba pantheon in West Africa. Baron Samedi spends much of his time at the crossroads between life and death. In Haitian voodoo religion, Baron Samedi has the power to decide who should die and who can live, he is not just a spirit but has the power over life and death. Throughout the Egyptian religion, female divinities were mostly seen as nurturers and protectors of the pharaoh and his people. But unlike mainstream goddesses like Sekhmet or Isis, there are two others who are rarely talked about when discussing the Egyptian mythology, so today we are going to discuss the legend surrounding the entities closely related to the pharaoh’s sovereignty, the goddesses Nekhbet and Wadjet representing the Upper and Lower domains of Egypt. According to the ancient Egyptian scriptures, the "Two Ladies" was a religious epithet for the goddesses Nekhbet and Wadjet, the two deities worship by all after the unification of Lower and Upper Egypt. When the two kingdoms were joined together, a lot of similar deities from different cities were combined to form a unique entity, but this was not the case of Wadjet and Nekhbet as they were simply kept separated. From the early dynastic period, the Two Ladies were the divine protectors of the king and were featured on royal headdresses, jewelries and furniture. Nekhbet whose name signifies She of Nekheb was a local mother goddess identified with the crown of Upper Egypt, equating to Wadjet, the snake-goddess of royal authority whose name stands for the green one or She of the Papyrus. Her chief cult center were the twin cities that were made home of legendary kings of Khemet, and eventually became to be known as the house of Wadjet. The two ladies were represented by dangerous creatures that needed to be pacified in order to show how deadly they could be as protective deities. Wadjet is often depicted as a fire-breathing cobra and Nekhbet takes the form of a vulture with wings spread apart while holding the symbols of eternity in her talons. Nekhbet was also depicted as the white cow mentioned in the Pyramid scriptures, a familiar representation in respect of Egyptian mothers and creator goddesses. In the form of a vulture the goddess Nekhbet is shown hovering above the king, and the goddess Wadjet as the Uraeus symbol displayed on his crown which epitomizes the power of the pharaoh’s sovereignty. And thus Wadjet forms an essential part of the sun god’s symbolism, coiling around the sun to represent the destructive powers of the solar Eye of Ra. Born from Geb and Nut she was the fourth one after Osiris, Isis, Seth and was the older sister of blind Horus. The goddess Nephthys features in the narratives as the devoted companion of her sister Isis, but she was also a protective deity in funerary rituals who attended mummies on their mortuary biers. In Egyptian mythology, Nephthys was usually pictured as a kite or as a woman with outstretched falcon wings, a symbol of protection, and the meaning of her Egyptian name is mistress of the house or Lady of the temple enclosure. Being the sister of Isis and especially Osiris, Nephthys is a deity who symbolizes the death experience just like Isis represented the birth experience. Alongside Isis, Neith and the scorpion goddess Selket, Nephthys guarded the remains of the dead, for they are mentioned in the Pyramid scriptures as the four goddesses watching over the pharaoh’s mummified body and organs, and their images were found inside the tomb of Tutankhamun as the guardians of his canopic vessels. Though she doesn’t appear in many stories, the goddess Nephthys is best known for the part she played in the Osiris myth as we cannot talk about it without mentioning her and Isis. The linen bandages that were used to wrap up mummies like Osiris in this case were called the “Tresses of Nephthys as they were in a certain way associated to the goddess. In the Book of the Dead, she often stands with her sister behind the throne of Osiris presiding over the final judgment, and the Lamentations of Isis and Nephthys were now included in the Egyptian Book of the Dead and was recited at the Egyptian funerals. As a primeval goddess of Kemet, she was a member of a tribunal of nine deities of immense power, the Ennead of Heliopolis. The Egyptian god Seth was thought to represent the dry and desert lands of distant places, contrary to his brother Osiris. At all periods, Seth was associated with the dangerous aspects of the desert, becoming the deity personifying everything that the ancient Egyptians feared from the desert regions. According to the ancient Egyptians, the god Seth is one of the first five gods born from the union of Geb and Nut right after the creation of the world, he then went by few other names among which Set, Seth and Sutekh usually translated as instigator of confusion and destroyer. Ancient texts assigned various spouses to Seth, but his most popular triad of consorts included his sister Nephthys and two warlike western Semitic goddesses known as Anat and Astarte. Among thee Egyptian gods and goddesses, Seth himself is usually depicted in human form with the head of a strange animal with erect ears plus a long curving snout. He is also represented wholly as a red beast with a forked tail in which case he bears no real resemblance to any living creature, this led many to identify the sinister animal as a purely mythological creature imagined to represent the god Seth. Based on the Egyptian mythology, Seth grew jealous of his brother’s power, resented his success and decided to remove him for good, his resentment grew even more after his wife Nephthys disguised herself as Isis to seduce the great king and became pregnant with the mortuary god Anubis. Seth was the natural opponent of Horus the Elder, and occasionally appeared as the great rival of Horus the younger over the crown of Egypt. Amaterasu is a glorious goddess and the personification of the rising sun, the queen of Shinto divinities. based on Japanese mythology, the sun represents order and purity, two important concepts in Shintoism. Amaterasu symbolizes not just order but the justice that maintains it as well. The sun goddess is often depicted as a beautiful woman holding a mirror, the raven Yata Garasu is believed to be the messenger of the goddess. The name Amaterasu comes from the verb Amateru which can be translated as to shine from heaven, and this is the shorthand for Amaterasu ōmikami. Before the Meiji restoration, Amaterasu was significant across Japan. It was only after Shintoism was formally recognized as a state religion that the role of the sun goddess was solidified, and the imperial family set once more as the head of the democratized Japan. Amaterasu appear in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, she is one of the three deities born from Izanagi’s purification following his attempt to free Izanami from the Yomi. The most popular myth concerning Amaterasu is the one about her shutting herself in a cave after an argument with Susanoo who was banished from heaven by their father. As a consequence of her disappearance, humanity was cast into total darkness. The other Kami looked down upon humanity and decided to bring back the sun. The light of the sun reentered the world, winter ended and spring brought life back to Japan. Amaterasu later forgave her brother after receiving the sword Kusanagi as a gift. Amaterasu sent Ninigi to rule the earthly realm and gave him items in order to build a kingdom of justice. Among which the Yata-no-Kagami, the jewel Yasakani-no-Magatama, and the grass-cutting sword Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the Heavenly sword of gathering clouds. Ninigi’s great-grandson, the emperor Jimmu who founded the state in 660 BCE became the first emperor of Japan, and ruled with the sacred treasures as a sign of his divine lineage. The belief of possessing these relics allowed the Japanese imperial family to claim divine ancestry. The Ise Grand Shrine known as Jingū, is not only the most significant shrine history-wise in Japan but also the official dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu. Amaterasu Ōmikami is the sun goddess in Japanese mythology, she is the ruler of the heaven, and the mythical ancestress of the imperial house of Japan. He is associated with creation, knowledge and the sacred Vedas. According to some Hindu sources such as the Mahabharata, Brahma is supreme in the triad of great Hindu gods which includes Vishnu and Shiva. Most likely seen wearing a white robe with a sacred cord across his shoulder, Brahma is commonly depicted as a red or golden-complexioned bearded man with four heads facing the cardinal directions. This is to say that we must see that good and evil are intertwined in our universe and we should learn how to separate the two, keeping what is valuable and discarding what is not. The origins of the term Brahma are uncertain, partly because several related words are found in the Vedic literature, such as Brahman for the Ultimate Reality and Brahmaṇa for priest. A distinction between the spiritual concept of Brahman and the deity Brahma is that the former is a genderless abstract metaphysical concept in Hinduism, while the latter is one of the many masculine gods in Hindu tradition. The spiritual concept of Brahman is quite old and some scholars suggest that the deity may have emerged as a personification of the impersonal universal principle of Brahman. But Brahma, although being the creative aspect of Brahman is not Brahman. Vishnu is more likely to be seen as a physical expression of the Absolute, as we observe him sleeping on Vasuki in the primal ocean of milk out of time and out of space. It is in this myth that Brahma appears seated as the first conscious deity on a lotus emerging from Vishnu's navel. This Brahma has four faces and four arms holding the four holy books that exist before creation, and that give him the authority to create. With Vishnu and Shiva, Brahma belongs to the trinity of supreme deities in the Hindu pantheon, however in terms of worship he does not have the importance of the other two gods. During the post-Vedic period, Brahma was a prominent deity who lost his significance by the 7th century. This is exactly the reason why some accounts say that if there is a worshiped trinity in India, the great goddess or Devi in her many forms would make up the third part with Vishnu and Shiva, but Brahma remains of great mythological importance. Lugh of the long arms was more accurately portrayed as a master of all crafts and a cunning warrior, a prominent figure in many stories of Irish mythology, especially where he leads the Tuatha Dé Danann at the second battle of Moy Tura. Despite the popularity of his name in the Celtic world, the meaning behind it has been the source of significant debate causing differences in its pronunciation, often changing from Lug, Lughr and Lugh depending on the account. In a context of Indo-European languages, Lugh is thought to be connected to the Proto-Indo-European word Leuk-, which means brightness or light. This further strengthens his association to the sun, as the deity is often considered a solar figure in Celtic mythology. Lugh was also a trickster who was willing to cheat to overcome his opponents, so the Irish god was in this manner similar to Lugus, a trickster entity pictured by the Romans as the Gaulish Mercury. Lugh went by numerous epithets including the common Lugh Lámfhada, meaning Lugh of the long arms. What seem interesting is that he was given this epithet not because his arms dragged on the ground, but because his weapons extended his reach beyond other warriors’ abilities. So his prowess using magical artifacts made him a fierce opponent in battle. These incredible weapons in his possession involved not only a deadly sling, but a legendary spear belonging to the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Cath Maighe Tuireadh, Lugh was apparently the grandson of the Fomorian king Balor through Ethniu, and his father was Cian of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Much like the Greek Keres that we have in Greek mythology. It was only because of the influence of women who fought as men during the Viking age that the Valkyries were more romanticized, and the descriptions of beautiful Valkyries taking the braves up to a glorious afterlife replaced this unpleasant image. According to some account, the Valkyries are believed to be the loyal daughters of Odin, and just like their father they were highly related to magic and were the keepers of knowledge. Often regarded as the founder of the first Yoruba city of Ife, Obatala is one of the oldest Orishas who was granted authority to create humanity. Though it was the supreme god, Olodumare(Olorun) who created the universe, Obatala is the heavenly father of every living thing brought to life by the supreme god. Obatala is often depicted as an old man with white robes that symbolizes peace, clarity of thoughts and wisdom. The Yoruba people often associate him with white substances such as white flowers, coconut, milk and rice. And just like the Orisha himself, the priesthood and worshipers of Obatala only wear white garments. In Yoruba, Oba means King and Tala or Ala to be specific means undyed fabric, so he is the blank canvas, the King of the White Cloth believed to be a peaceful judge. According to the Yoruba tradition, Obatala is the only Orisha who has an equal number of both male and female paths, probably because he is the father of creation and thus can’t be thought of having a specific gender. This is the reason why in terms of sacrifices, the orisha Obatala who is usually conceived as male figure is the only male Orisha who eats in the female circle. Meet The Aziza | African Mythology Explained Description: Aziza is a word deeply rooted in West African mythology, and denotes a supernatural creature renowned for its benevolence. In African mythology, these fuzzy little spirits dwell within the depths of the forest, and were revered for their proficiency in bestowing positive magic, especially to hunters. The accounts of the Aziza existence first arise in the folklore of the Dahomey tribes in West Africa, where they are described as benevolent spirits having a fortunate guidance and forest wisdom. In most Dahomey Folklore, the Aziza for all intents and purposes are often portrayed as little creatures that look to be the African version of the fairy known in Europe. While a singular portrayal remains elusive, diverse accounts present the Aziza fairy as little humans scarcely taller than children and possessing remarkable beauty glowing with magical light. Contrary to European Fairies who are usually notorious for being chaotic and mischievous at best, spiteful and vindictive at worst, the Aziza spirits are mostly seen as benevolent creatures of the forest. The mythology says that the Aziza were leading hunters and guiding lost travelers to safety, they own profound magical abilities that were bestowed upon humans for generations. In the African religion known as Fon, the Aziza are related to the supernatural powers of the Gbo, a charm believed to shield its owner against evil and could attack their enemies on its own. The Aziza are depicted as dwelling together in communal settings, and these collectives are occasionally referred to as “Azizan,” and coexist harmoniously with the forest while safeguarding its delicate equilibrium and nurturing its diverse inhabitants. The term “Aziza” is mainly featured in the Dahomey folklore, yet it’s relevant to acknowledge the presence of analogous entities in diverse cultures. However, beyond the simple designation of “Aziza,” various regions have given names and their own interpretations to this elusive entity. For instance within the Yoruba tradition, the Aziza is mixed up with the concept of “Igba Iwase,” which are spirits believed to inhabit sacred stones and offer counsel to humanity. In the regions where traditional beliefs influence the living of its devotees, the ceremonies venerating the Aziza still exist, reaffirming their status as custodians of the natural realm and spiritual mentors for humanity. Furthermore, the concept of Aziza goes beyond geographical confines, and captivates the imaginations of individuals fascinated by African folklore. One of the most malevolent associations cats have is with witchcraft, but another connection comes from Japan through Japanese mythology, in the form of the legendary Bakeneko. The demonic cat is at the origin of many legends, behind the peculiar appearance of the animal hides a monster capable of mischievous deeds. The origins of the Bakeneko stem from the 17th century, an era where cats were greatly valued for protecting the silkworm industry and the sutras from rodents when Buddhism came to Japan. Originating from Japanese folklore, this ordinary looking cat is a member of the Yokai family, and the term Bakeneko could be translated as the shape-shifting cat. Making a difference between a Bakeneko and a domestic cat might not be an easy task, for the reason that they change as they get older. When the tail of a Bakeneko splits in two, you're dealing with a Nekomata which is a more malevolent cat, and with almost no difference between them the Nekomata are essentially powered up Bakeneko, they are the oldest and have two tails allowing them to create double the trouble. Although not all Bakeneko are nefarious, all Nekomata are known to be because they always find great pleasure in creating chaos in humans’ lives. Based on Japanese Folklore and mythology, not every cat could turn into a Bakeneko as it should meet certain criteria. There are plenty of urban legends featuring a Bakeneko in various parts of Japan, and one of them is related to the vampire cat from the Nabeshima Bakeneko. Although most Bakeneko are devious creatures ready to devour their master to achieve their ends, there are also some nice ones like the Maneki Neko. Nowadays the Bakeneko is regarded as a legend for most of the Japanese people, but some of them still fear or even worship them. At the origin of a centuries-old myth, the supernatural cat is honored with a festival every year in Tokyo during Halloween. The Bakeneko Matsuri is definitely a celebration not to be missed if you are a cat lover.
