And the answer is “YES!” Not only to they cause weight gain but they also contribute to several other metabolic disorders. These are the findings of the researchers at the University of Manitoba's George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation. They reviewed 37 studies that where done over the last 10 years. These studies documented the results from over 400,000 participants who used artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and stevioside. This is just the opposite of what has been used to market these types of products as an aid in reducing caloric consumption for weight management. 1:37 Yahoo Article – Artificial Sweeteners Are Linked to Weight Gain and Other Health Issues In an online article from Yahoo Beauty, the study author states, “I think most people consuming artificial sweeteners assume these products will help them avoid weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease – and yet we are seeing the opposite association from multiple studies.” These researchers and others have theorized that the increased risk for weight gain is caused by a craving for other sweet things. This then leads to an increased consumption of higher-calorie foods. Especially since the person eating the artificial sweeteners thinks they are saving on calories, which allows them to consume other higher calorie items. 2:15 Artificial Sweeteners and Gut Microbiome But we don't have to theorize anymore. Not if you look at what artificial sweeteners do to a person's microbiome. In a recent study done in Israel, scientist took 10-week old mice and fed them a daily dose of aspartame, sucralose or saccharin. The another group of mice were given water laced with one of two natural sugars, either glucose or sucrose. While most people would assume that the mice given the natural sugars would experience weight gain, just the opposite happened. After 11 weeks, the mice who consumed natural sugars were fine. However, the mice who were fed artificial sweeteners experienced abnormally high blood sugar levels that if left unchecked could lead to metabolic disorders like diabetes. And the microbiome of the mice given the artificial sweeteners experienced a significant shift in their gut bacteria from bacteroidetes to firmicutes. This is significant! 3:11 Firmicutes versus Bacteroidetes When you look at the microbiome of obese mice and obese humans, they are dominated by firmicutes. When you look at the microbiome of lean mice and lean humans, they are dominated by bacteroidetes. According to Jeffrey Gordon, a physician and biologist at Washington University in St. Louis, this relationship between bacteria and obesity is more than just a coincidence. As Dr. Gordon notes: “more than 90 percent of the bacterial species in the gut come from just two subgroups – Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes.” There have been numerous studies that show when you increase the population of firmicutes over bacteroidetes, there is an increase in weight gain and metabolic disorders. While there can be multiple factors that can cause this change in the microbial community, current research clearly shows how artificial sweeteners can be a significant factor is changing your microbial community. Allowing firmicutes to dominate, which then leads to weight gain through increase fat storage. This then leads to other metabolic diseases. Bottom Line: stop drinking and eating foods that contain artificial sweeteners. If you're using the L-arginine pathway for the production of nitric oxide, then you will not produce nitrites that can be picked up by these test strips, which is very misleading. 3:00 Truth #6 Finally there is the Johns Hopkins study. This study blamed L-arginine for more post heart attacks, in those who had a precious heart attack, when compare to their placebo group. The problem with this study was the use of Hcl, as a carrier molecule for the L-arginine supplement used in the study. HCl or hydrochloride lowers potassium levels in the body. This effects muscle relaxation, which can then trigger a heart spasm leading to a heart attack. Well there you have it. The real truth and not some marketing ploy to get you to buy a product. Let's start with what Dr. Lundell identifies as the cause of heart disease. It 's inflammation triggered by sugar. Most cardiovascular health issues center on atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of fatty plaque in your arteries. This buildup has been attributed to LDL cholesterol, but as Dr. Lundell clearly presents (in the last 6 minutes of his video) the real cause is sugar. And how it effects your endothelial cell, which line all of your vascular system. Most cells have glucose receptors that help the cell turn off the intake of sugar or glucose into the cell. Endothelial cells to not have glucose receptors. This means they have no mechanism for turning off or stopping the intake of sugar into their cells. Don't start taking a low dose of aspirin if you have an increased risk of bleeding. Don't start taking a low dose of aspirin if you're over age 60 and aren't already taking daily aspirin. In 2019 the American College of Cardiology also revised their guidelines. Their new recommendation was, to not use daily aspirin if you were over the age of 70, or for any adult who had an increased risk of bleeding. A low dose aspirin or “baby aspirin” is usually 81 milligrams. But as the medical community has learned, even at this low level aspirin can still be a powerful anti-platelet agent, which prevents red blood cells from sticking to each other. A recent study in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry compared white wine, red wine and blueberry wine for their ability to deliver the cardio-protective benefits of anthocyanins, a powerful class of antioxidants. Using a moderate drink (about 4 ounces) as their testing sample, white wine delivered .47 mmol of this free radical absorbing antioxidant, red wine delivered 2.04 mmol, and blueberry wine (made from high bush blueberries) delivered 2.42 mmol. This would make sense since the darker the pigmentation of the fruit the greater its antioxidant capacity. 2:02 Cancer Protection Blueberries seem to provide protection against both colon and ovarian cancer. In laboratory studies published by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the phenolic compounds extracted from blueberries were able to inhibit colon cancer cell proliferation as well as induce programmed cell death.
