Description: Congenital scoliosis is caused by a deformity in the spine that is present from birth. This video discusses if we can use The Schroth Method for treatment of congenital scoliosis. In this video, one of our patients who has congenital scoliosis is a model to show some of the things we have to consider when treating someone with congenital scoliosis. The main answer to this question is, YES, we can treat those with congenital scoliosis using The Schroth Method. We just have to make sure we understand the anatomy of the spine and what is going on with their imbalances. Once we understand this, and we develop a plan to implement The Schroth Method, these curves respond well to treatment and this can be really helpful to stop progression, relieve pain, and avoid surgery. This patient has a left thoracic scoliosis curve, and this position is a great way to open the concave side and allow for active self correction. There are many benefits we discuss in this video. Please DON'T DO THIS AT HOME until you have met with a Schroth Method therapist to learn if this position is right for your curve! This is a very specific exercise position in The Schroth Method for a specific curve type. If you do this and your curve type is different, you could be making your curve worse. This video is meant to show what the side sitting exercise is, and to help those who have been trained to review and refresh their knowledge. There are many schools that teach The Schroth Method, and the way this is demonstrated may not be the same as what you have seen in your practice or with your treatment. The BSPTS (Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School), SSOL (Scoliosis and Spine Online Learning), and PSSE Schroth schools all teach active self correction in this position, but there may be some differences. In this video we demonstrate how to use a staggered hand position to get more expansion and elongation into the concave side of the curve. This exercise needs to be done carefully and should not be performed unless instructed by your Schroth therapist. It is only helpful when we are not sacrificing another curve to get the opening of the concavity. In this demonstration, the patient has congenital scoliosis and this has caused tension in the left concavity over many years. This staggered grip in semi hang is helpful for her to get more mobility in the concavity and improve her Schroth exercises.
