Tom </video> <video> 3 Pain Relieving Stretches for Neck and Upper Trap Tightness - Apex Ortho Rehab Spine Specialist Description: Lets discuss the tightness and or pain that exists in your neck or upper trapezius. The neck and upper trapezius or (traps), are prone to tightness in most modern peoples lives. BUT WHY?? We spend a lot of time looking down at our phones, slumped over looking up at a computer screen, or slouching on the couch, and all that time with our upper backs in a rounded position tends to put prolonged stress on the back of our necks. "But I don't work on the computer or phone and I work out too." You can still develop muscle imbalances or poor posture if you're not keeping the right muscles flexible and strong. In our clinic, we tend to see a correlation between neck/upper trap pain and lack of mobility in neck extension and sometimes flexion. When the neck loses mobility and becomes tight, the upper traps and shoulders also develop tightness. Think about shrugging your shoulders up to your ears and how the muscles above your shoulders tighten. What is the upper trapezius? The traps are typically distinguished by, the lower, middle and upper traps. The traps start all the way up from the neck, down into the shoulders and continue down into the middle back. The upper traps are responsible for raising the scapula or shoulders, rotating and extending (looking up) the neck. The thoracic spine is what we call the middle portion of your spine. When your thoracic spine lacks mobility, meaning an hindered ability to rotate or extend your back, it can also lead to neck and shoulder stiffness. As you watch the video, you will see a heavy focus on neck and thoracic spine mobility as these are the two most common sources of pain in the neck region. In 2019 it was reported by the CDC that nearly 40% of US adults had experienced back pain recently. A lack of spine mobility and inactivity of specific core muscles tend to be the culprit. In this video, we focus on mobility stretches of the mid back but you can find plenty of strengthening exercises in one of our other videos. While we tend to agree that working on back stretches and core exercises are very effective, sometimes that may not be the source of your problem. Even if you're not experiencing any neck symptoms, there is a chance that there is some stress, tightness, or pinching in your neck that is referring pain down to your upper back. In this case, we need to work on your neck mobility and once that is done, strengthen the muscles around it in order to keep it from getting tight again. Tom </video> <video> Disc Herniation // Next Steps to Avoid Surgery Description: You just came back from the doctor and they're saying you have a lumbar disc herniation. It can be overwhelming knowing that there is something wrong within your spine. It sure can be painful as well. However, with the right knowledge and plan of care, there is a good chance that you return back to the things you love to do. In this video, we discuss what lumbar disc herniations are, the different types of herniations, successful treatment plans, and some exercises for more spine mobility. There is a lot of information that we cover in this and not all of it may apply to you, but hopefully you can take away a few key points that make your back feel better. One of the things we like to say in the clinic is that educating the patient properly is the best thing that we can do. Figuring out what the cause of the patients pain is, what aggravates it, and what makes it feel better is all part of the education that we hope they can take home and remedy any flare ups that appear down the road. Creating a plan of care is very personalized and can vary drastically based off of age, herniation type, medical history, etc. So just because one person said a stretch made all the difference, doesn't mean the same should happen for you. (Simple Self Evaluation) - Spine & Neck Specialist Description: Hip pain can be extremely irritating and disrupt your daily life. One idea is that our increasingly sedentary lifestyles are causing tightness in our hip flexors, which are responsible for "flexing the hip" or bringing your knee to your waist. When we lose the ability to properly use a joint in its full capacity, there is usually an increased likelihood for injury or general pain. We always recommend that you go to a professional physical therapist or orthopedic doctor for an evaluation so you can be directed to the right people for your care. An evaluation should also educate on your own body. Whether they say, you have weakness in your glutes or a lack of hip extension, you should have some sort of understanding on what you need to work on. If you can't make it into a professional setting, then start out with the self evaluation that we have provided in the video. With that you can test and check for an imbalance in the hips and decide whether the stretches we prescribed are right for you. The goal is to see an INCREASE in hip flexor flexibility or just general hip joint mobility as well as a DECREASE in hip pain. If you see no increase in range of motion or you lose ROM, then this is probably not the right stretch or you could be performing them wrong. Maybe you see a slight increase in mobility but the pain is still there. The key is consistency with these stretches. After a week of consistent stretching and no results, then you might need an addition of hip strengthening to go along with the stretches. The problem might be your neck #shoulderpain Description: In the clinic over the years I've seen numerous cases of people that have shoulder pain after shoulder surgery or isolated shoulder pain that was emanating from their neck. The problem is often the patient does not have a history of neck pain or current complaints. In a recent research study, they have demonstrated this phenomenon of extremity pain of spinal origin with the absence of spinal pain. This can be quite confusing for the patient, physical therapist, and physician. This is where a thorough examination of regions above and below the shoulder to ensure they are not referring pain to this area. A proper evaluation will include a patient's history of the current problem, a clinical examination including testing range of motion, strength testing, and a neurological screen paired with imaging when necessary. </video> <video> What is a Disc Herniation SHORT w Captions#discherniation #discbulge Description: </video> <video> The Most Sucessful Mckenzie Neck Stretch Alternatives - Apex Orthopedic // NJ Back & Neck Specialist Description: Have you tried cervical retractions or retractions with extensions but still have some lingering pain? We have some alternative Mckenzie neck stretches that we commonly give out to our patients here at the clinic when the standard variations aren't clearing everything up. Dealing with neck pain is a "pain in the neck". It can be very painful and affect your daily life or it can come and go. Either way, no one wants to deal with it. The best way to overcome it is to create a personalized plan, and STAY CONSISTENT with it. That means, making sure your doing the stretches or exercises when you're supposed to as well as doing them with good intent. Whether it cures you or not, after 1-2 weeks, you should be able to tell if the program has any effect. If you've been dealing with your neck pain for a while, you may have heard of the McKenzie Method or McKenzie neck stretches. They commonly consist of cervical retractions and cervical retractions with extension. There are a couple more but these are the 2 we most often prescribe. In the video, we discuss those 2 movements along with a few more variations of the 2 stretches. Many people have chronic neck pain and stiffness and have been stretching for relief hoping for relief without success. A great option is to start an isometric strengthening program. In this video, we will demonstrate how to perform an isometric program. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for patients to see improvements in pain levels and tolerance for ADLs.
