It is situated next to the beautiful Mae Taeng River in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, and is home to a small herd of elephants now enjoying a more natural life since being retired from elephant riding and previously logging. The elephants love to make their way to the nearby river to cool off, drink, and play, as well as forage on the tall grasses that line its banks. The herd also regularly enters the forest to forage in peace on native plants, including the wild bamboo and grass that grows there. These two senior elephants spend their days wandering in the forest and grassy fields near the project where they are joined by a group of dogs. Several months back, a stray black cat gave birth to a litter of kittens who made this place their home. This project aims to improve the living conditions of elephants in Surin by providing a compassionate alternative for their owners through responsible volunteering. This volunteer project is focused on rescuing elephants from street begging so that they can return to their owner’s village to live a more natural life, where they have the freedom to roam, take mud baths, and socialize with the herd. Volunteers stay with the mahout’s families in a traditional home stay where they help care for the elephants and learn about the Kuy culture (also known as Guay or Suy). Volunteers joining this project provide a valuable service by directly supporting the local community as well as the elephants. Activities may include preparing food for the elephants, planting and harvesting grass, building ponds, teaching English at a local school, and taking part in traditional Buddhist ceremonies. She was rescued and brought to live at Pamper A Pachyderm about 6 years ago. Sa Ard is blind in her left eye as a result of a cataract and only has partial vision in her right eye. She is a friendly elephant who likes people and loves to eat a variety of food, especially bananas, watermelon without the skin, and tamarind. Sa Ard enjoys walking in the forest, eating bamboo leaves and shoots as well as picking up figs that have fallen to the ground. Sa Ard and her friend, Happy are cared for with dedication by Mouy who has a relationship of mutual respect and affection with the elephants.
