Mit der Übernahme der ISO 15848-1 werden die bisherigen vagen Vorgaben bei der Ventilprüfung überwunden, die unter der alten TA-Luft einen großen Interpretationsspielraum zuließen. So war beispielsweise - ein direkter Vergleich getesteter Ventile nicht möglich. - Wichtige Ausdauerklassen waren nicht definiert, etwa die Anzahl der mechanischen oder thermischen Zyklen, - Und es wurde nur das Dichtsystem der Spindeldurchführung im Prüfverfahren berücksichtigt, nicht aber die Gehäusedichtung. Was ändert sich für Industriearmaturen? Die wesentlichen Änderungen betreffen die Absperr- und Regelorgane, wie in Kapitel 5.2.6.4 konkretisiert wird. Bei der alten TA-Luft nach VDI 2440 durften nur hochwertige abgedichtete metallische Faltenbälge mit nachgeschalteten Sicherheitsstopfbuchsen oder gleichwertige Dichtsysteme verwendet werden. Außerdem galten Dichtungssysteme als gleichwertig, wenn die temperaturspezifischen Leckageraten im Nachweisverfahren eingehalten wurden. Anders verhält es sich mit der TA-Luft-Novelle gemäß der ISO 15848-1! Hier werden die geprüften Armaturen in Leistungsklassen eingeteilt bezüglich - Dichtheit, - Temperatur, - Druck und - Festigkeit. Das bedeutet, dass die gesamte Armatur, über die Spindelabdichtung hinaus, klassifiziert wird. Ab Dezember 2025 müssen Absperrventile oder Regelorgane wie Schieber oder Kugelhähne folgende Spezifikationen erfüllen. Siehe Tabelle im Video. Abdichtungen von Spindeldurchführungen, die als hochwertig abgedichtete metallische Faltenbälge mit nachgeschalteter Sicherheitsstopfbuchse ausgeführt sind, erfüllen die Anforderungen der Leckagerate LB ohne gesonderten Nachweis. Andernfalls muss die ISO 15848-1 oder gleichwertige Prüfverfahren zum Nachweis der spezifischen Leckagerate des Dichtsystems sowie zu deren Prüfung, Bewertung und Qualifikation herangezogen werden. Um die Dichtheit dauerhaft sicherzustellen, sind Anforderungen für die Prüfung und Wartung der Dichtsysteme in Managementanweisungen festzulegen. Ein weiterer Pluspunkt ist, dass durch die Übernahme des ISO 15848-Verfahrens jeder, der die Prüfergebnisse einer Armatur einsehen möchte, nicht mehr den Prüfbericht durchsehen muss. Die Informationen sind über die Klassifizierung sofort verfügbar. Dies waren die wesentlichen Änderungen der TA-Luft-Novelle, die sich aus der Angleichung an die ISO 15848-1 für Industriearmaturen ergeben. But injection or sampling applications can also be very tricky. This is because an object inserted into a pipeline can prove disastrous if it is not properly designed. In the case of a sampling or injection probe, the vibration generated by the flow can cause the probe to vibrate so strongly that it breaks. But first, let's explain the difference between an injection application and a sampling application. As the name suggest, injection is used when adding additives into the media in the pipeline, to produce a product according to end user specification. As for sampling, purpose is to draw media out from a pipeline, and this media will be use as sample, that will be sent to a lab, to check if the sample drawn from this sector is within the product parameters. WAKE FREQUENCY CALCULATION Well, considering that an object inserted into the pipeline can prove disastrous if not properly designed, the calculation of the wake frequency becomes an important factor in the design of an injection or sampling DBB valve. Thereby, following rule of thumb applies for the length of the parts to be inserted into the pipeline: 1. Injection probe needs to be inserted to the center of the pipeline. 2. Sampling probe needs to be inserted to 1/3 of the pipeline diameter. So how does the wake frequency calculation work in practice? Let`s check an example. 1. An injection DBB Valve with probe must be inserted ½ way into a 400 mm diameter pipeline. 2. To achieve that the probe tip is in the middle of the pipeline at 200 mm, the probe length must be 350 mm. 3. This overall length is considered as the "unsupported length". 4. After the wake frequency calculation, the result shows that the maximum unsupported length is 300 mm instead of required 350 mm. 5. In this case, a support collar must be inserted to achieve the length require by the end user. Well, let's see how the wake frequency calculation looks like using a support collar. 1. A support collar is set at 50 mm away from the flange of the DBB valve. 2. This portion is now considered as the “supported length”. 3. The portion below with of 300 mm is considered as the “unsupported length”. 4. The calculation starts from support collar onwards to the end of the probe. 5. Having a “unsupported length” of probe at 300 mm, it is now within the recommendation for the wake frequency. 6. And the overall length of the probe of 350 mm can be used as required. STANDARD ASME PTC 19.3TW According to the standard ASME PTC 19.3TW, which focuses more on thermowells but can also be applied to injection or sampling DBB valves with probe, support collars or other support are outside the scope of this standard and should only be used in consideration of the individual application parameters. Based on this, process engineers should better consider following options, which could be better ways to prevent failures: 1. Reducing the immersion probe length into the pipeline. 2. Reducing the height of flangeolet to reduce overall “unsupported length” of probe. 3. Achieving maximum probe diameter of injection or sampling DBB valves. For the Oil & Gas Industry API 6D and OSHA are the most important specifications. Let`s have a look on both specifications! According to API 6D edition 2022, a Double Block and Bleed Valve System is defined as “A valve with two or more sealing elements that, in the closed position, provides a seal against pressure from both ends of the valve with a means of bleeding the cavity between the sealing elements. ”You should be aware, that such a DBB valve does not provide positive double isolation when only one side is under pressure. For such an application, API 6D defines a DIB valve “A valve with two or more sealing elements, each of which, in the closed position, provide a seal against pressure from a single source, with a means of bleeding the cavity between the sealing elements.” In contrast, OSHA defines only one Double Block and Bleed Valve System as “the closure of a line, duct, or pipe by closing and locking or tagging two inline valves and by opening and locking or tagging a drain or vent valve in the line between the two closed valves”. Important to know is, that the API's DBB Type A and Type B definition, or even the DIB Type B definition does not achieve the same level of isolation as OSHA's, respectively API DIB Type A. API Type B defines a DBB or DIB valve as one single valve with two seats, while the OSHA standard and API Type A can only be achieved with two separate valves with a method to bleed pressure in between. Through this, the isolation level is increased enormously. So to sum up, you can say that OSHA is equivalent to API DIB Type A. In which applications are the DBB valves used? Double block and bleed valves are most commonly used in the oil and gas industry but can also be helpful in many other industries. It’s typically used where bleeding the valve cavity is required, where piping needs positive, high level isolation for maintenance, or for any of following scenarios:  Prevent product contamination  Remove equipment from service for cleaning or repair  Meter calibration  Liquid service near waterways or municipalities  Transmission and storage  Chemical injection and sampling  Isolate instrumentation such as pressure indicators and lever gauges  Primary process steam  Shut off and vent pressure measuring instruments There you have it! The toxic medium which is under high pressure flows through those valves. However, the medium is not pure. Hard particles like stones are part of the process medium, too. During route maintenance work, the maintenance man notices that the Single Ball DBB Valve is difficult to operate. Not giving much attention about the reason for this, he continues to try to operate the valve. Finally, the maintenance man is able to close the Single Ball DBB Valve by 90 degrees. However, particles such as stones are jammed unnoticed between the ball and the seat. When this occurs, the jammed particles slowly destroy the ball surface and the upstream and/or downstream seat. As a consequence, leakage occurs at the outlet side of the closed Single Ball DBB Valve. The toxic medium, which is under high pressure, escape unnoticed and cause an explosion. The damage is very serious: The maintenance man is seriously injured, the pipeline is destroyed, and the toxic gases cause environmental damage, too. Let's look at what would happen if you had used a Dual Ball DBB Valve in the same situation. Even if the primary ball valve leaks, the secondary ball valve remains tight, ensuring you a reliable process, healthy employees and clean environment. There you have it! The question of why you should use a Dual Ball DBB design and not just a Single Ball DBB design is answered. As our world becomes more digital, switching to a more sustainable and effective medium than paper is a priority. So how can you make the leap to a digital document and product control cycle? The IEC 61406 standard – formerly called DIN SPEC 91406 – and the VDI 2770 standard are well suited for this purpose. Let us explain how. We start with the IEC 61406 Standard. Due to the rising relevance of digitization, the industry standard DIN SPEC 91406 was replaced by the international IEC standard 61406 in October 2022. The IEC 61406 states that each article such as a valve or manifold, must be marked with a globally biunique identifier for physical objects. This unique number, called ID for short, is encoded in a QR code or RFID tag, which allow the unique identification of the components. What is the VDI 2770 standard all about? The standard VDI 2770 provides nifty guidelines how the digital manufacturer information must be structured for the process industry, like 1. the structure of product-related documents, 2. data formats, 3. scope of metadata, 4. and more related information to standardize the communication between suppliers and customers. Thereby, the VDI 2770 states that the manufacturer, such as AS-Schneider, must classify his manufacturer information into 4 groups: Identification, technical characteristics, activity-specific documents and contract documents. The manufacturer, such as AS-Schneider, provides the normed data packages via an online-platform, the so-called cloud-based information exchange platform. Thereby the user can access the data packages which are structured according to the VDI 2770 standard and include: - Human-readable PDFs for the maintenance staff, operators, engineers and plant builders. - Machine-readable XMLs for easy integration into the customers plant system. - And the documents in their original data format. In the IEC 61406 standard and the VDI 2770 standard, you have two reliable guidelines for digitizing your components. Adding metadata is a lifesaver when it comes to finding relevant data - especially in larger projects with 1000s of pages of documentation. Dabei besagt die VDI 2770, dass der Hersteller, wie AS-Schneider, seine Herstellerinformationen in 4 Gruppen einteilen muss: Identifikation, technische Merkmale, tätigkeitsspezifische Dokumente und Vertragsdokumente. Der Hersteller stellt die genormten Datenpakete über eine Online-Plattform, die sogenannte cloudbasierte Informationsaustauschplattform, zur Verfügung. Dabei kann der Anwender auf die Datenpakete zugreifen, die nach dem VDI 2770 Standard strukturiert sind und folgendes beinhalten: - Menschenlesbare PDFs für das Wartungspersonal, Bediener, Ingenieure und Anlagenbauer; - maschinenlesbare XMLs für die einfache Integration in das Dokumentenmanagement des Kunden; - und die Dokumente in ihrem ursprünglichen Datenformat. Mit dem Standard IEC 61406 und dem Standard VDI 2770 haben Sie zwei zuverlässige Richtlinien für die Digitalisierung ihres Dokumentenmanagements. A process that used to be framed by VDI 2440 and now falls under ISO 15848-1. What does this mean for plant planners and builders? To begin with, adopting ISO 15848-1 provides a new guideline that can help overcome previous limitations associated with valve testing which left a wide scope for interpretation under the old TA-Luft. Thus, for example, • a valve comparison was not feasible. • Important endurance measures were undefined, such as the number of mechanical or thermal cycles, • And only the sealing system of the stem feedthrough in the testing procedure was considered but not the body seal. So what is different for industrial valves now? The core changes are for shut-off and control elements, as highlighted in Chapter 5.2.6.4. With the old TA-Luft in accordance with VDI 2440, only high-quality sealed metallic bellows with downstream safety stuffing boxes or equivalent sealing systems could be used. In addition, sealing systems were regarded as equivalent if the temperature-specific leakage rates were complied with in the verification procedure. The situation is different with the TA-Luft amendment in accordance with ISO 15848-1! First, the tested valves can be categorized using performance classes according to leading parameters such as • tightness, • temperature, • pressure, and • strength. Meaning the entire valve is classified beyond the stem seal. Starting in December 2025, shut-off valves or control devices such as gate or ball valves shall meet following specifications. See table in the video. Also, seals of spindle bushings, designed as high-quality sealed metallic bellows with downstream safety stuffing boxes, shall meet the requirements of the leakage rate LB without individual verifications. Otherwise, ISO 15848-1 or any other proven equivalent test must verify the specific leakage rate of the sealing system for testing, evaluation, and qualification. The inspection and maintenance requirements of the sealing systems must be specified in the management instructions. Another plus side is, thanks to the switch to the ISO 15848 procedure, anyone who wants to check the test results of a valve no longer must look through the test report to find answers. The information is available immediately through the classification. These were the main changes of the TA-Luft amendment, which result from the alignment with ISO 15848-1 for industrial valves. Don't forget, Germany-wide almost 50,000 plants are affected by the TA-Luft. In general, injection quills are used widely in the Power, Oil & Gas, Offshore, Desalination Industry for Treatment, Mixing, and Neutralizing of Process Products in Petrochemical, Chemical, Petroleum, Power and allied industry. Let´s look at the application fields of chemical injection quills. Chemical injection quills are used in many applications such as injecting additives, chemical treatment as well as bio treatment. Which chemicals are used in the oil and gas injection process? There are different chemicals which can be used in the oil and gas injection process. For example, methanol, corrosion inhibitor or 2S scavenger. Methanol is used as a hydrate inhibitor. Since hydrate solidifies, it can cause flow restrictions or plugging in wells and flowlines. Corrosion inhibitor is used to mitigate the corrosion in wells and pipelines to reduce downtime. H2S scavenger is used to treat oil and gas in reducing H2S levels, to reduce health risk and corrosion. What should you consider when designing a chemical injection quill? In the case that you need a chemical injection quill, you should consider 6 important points. Otherwise, a poorly designed quill can cause early failures and replacement. • Design calculation respectively wake frequency calculation Since the design requires thermal and stress considerations, you should consider the necessary process data like fluid, temperature, pressure, velocity, flow rate, density, and viscosity. • Material The material grade should be suitable to the service and the type of chemicals to be injected. • Safe isolation There are quill designs without integral isolation valve or involving only single isolation. To upgrade the safety level, an integral DBB valve is important in certain applications and media. This is the case with injection quill installed in API 6A high-pressure well heads rated at 10,000 psi. Talking about safety, the sealing design and leakage rates of the valve are critical, too. • Dimension One of the most important parameters in the wake frequency calculation is the length of the quill. The length is usually customized or as specified. In general, the injected chemical is dispersed well if the nozzles are positioned at the center of the pipeline. • Nozzles The standard for the injection quill is the usual cylindrical tubes or nozzles. In this context, blending hydrogen with natural gas is an important component that can accelerate current decarbonization plans to mitigate climate change. However, there are two key challenges: To begin with, hydrogen has different chemical properties than natural gas, which means that the regulatory framework for natural gas loses its validity. A second challenge is that the technical instructions for hydrogen that relate to valves have not yet been approved. To help you understand the current state of blending, we have summarized the 5 most important points for you: 1. Legal limits for hydrogen 2. And the storage proximity Legal limits for hydrogen: There are 4 main applications which should be kept in mind. • Hydrogen Transportation • Natural Gas Vehicles • Gas Turbine • And Underground Gas Storage Facilities Hydrogen Transportation: Hydrogen can be transported in the form of a gaseous energy carrier via the natural gas grid such as power-to-gas. In this context, the German DVGW regulation states that hydrogen from electrolysis and synthetic methane must comply with a legal limit of 1 to 10% in the natural gas grid. Natural Gas Vehicles: For natural gas vehicles, DIN 51624 stipulates a limit of 2% for hydrogen in the tank. Gas Turbine: Regarding gas turbines, manufacturers set a 1 to 5% hydrogen limit to avoid machine issues caused by a low-pollution premix in burners "sensitive" to the component. Underground Gas Storage Facilities: In any gas storage facilities, a hydrogen blending of 1% is allowed. Beyond that, hydrogen's biogas content should not exceed 5% in underground pore storage areas. This limit avoids the growth of undesirable sulfate-reducing bacteria harmful to the site. H2 tolerance of different components in the natural gas infrastructure We have summarized the essential elements for you in a matrix. The results of the compatibility analysis are divided into transportation, gas storage, M&C, distribution, and applications. Thereby, the hydrogen concentration range goes from 0 percent to 70 percent. The various compatibility areas are color coded. The blue section indicates the need for research and analysis. The yellow section illustrates where there is a need for regulation and control. And the turquoise section indicates the areas where hydrogen blending is safe. Temperature influences: This phenomenon happens in the high-temperature months of summer. In the summer, the low energy consumption and throughput often come with a reduced flow rate. If this low flow rate is to feed hydrogen only, the mixture with (existing) natural gas won't be good. Hydrogen bubbles will form. Then, high hydrogen concentrations in the natural gas network appear. As turns out, watching over the temperature makes a difference in blending efficiency. Gas flow rate continuity in the network: The significance lies in the impact it can have on the compliance of legal limits. Since hydrogen's concentration in the natural gas network is about 10% and, for some applications, it can't be above 2%, monitoring gas flow rate is essential to decide when and where to feed H2 into the grid. In addition, there is experience that a location with a continuously high gas flow in the network is helpful for electrolysers. But on the other hand, even small hydrogen amounts in low natural gas flow rates can lead to local exceedance of the permissible limits. This insight is crucial for operators. It allows them to choose the best location in the grid for H2 injection. Storage proximity: Especially when there is a large water electrolyzer with downstream methanation. This is a vital step that can enhance the process. They are exposed to temperature variations and other harsh weather influences. For example, the transported media can expand extremely when heated. If the media cannot expand because it is trapped in a fixed space, the pressure will increase, and this can also happen inside an isolated ball valve. However, it is important, that the body cavity is not released to atmosphere. There are two types of ball valve designs for which you should provide reliable cavity relief in such cases. - The floating ball valve design and - the trunnion ball valve design. Let's first look at the requirements of the floating ball valve design. For Double Block and Bleed Ball Valves, there are two important technical specifications you should consider when you want to use a floating ball valve design: The SHELL MESC 77/170 specification which stipulates a pressure equalizing hole of at least 3 mm in the ball. And the EEMUA 182 specification which prohibits such a gap. In contrast, it states that valves must have an automatic way to relieve overpressure. However, what is behind the floating ball valve design? The ball seats are fixed in the valve body and in the closed position a lateral movement of the ball is possible. When closing the valve, media is trapped in the cavity. The pressure relief hole connects the valve body cavity to the high pressure side of the ball valve when this is in the closed position according to Shell MESC SPE 77/170. Another solution is using self-venting ball seats according to EEMUA 182 specification. The surplus pressure is released around the upstream ball seat. Now let's check how cavity relief works with the trunnion ball valve design. A trunnion mounted ball valve means that the ball is constrained by bearings and is only allowed to rotate but the ball seats can move laterally. In the closed and even open position of the valve, the media is trapped in the cavity and isolated from the pipeline. Thus, the pressure caught in the body cavity might be different from that in the line. An example of this situation is when cold liquid like LNG is trapped and heated. That temperature change of the body cavity causes then an extreme pressure build-up. It pushes the ball seat away from the ball by rising pressure against the spring load. When this happens, the pressure is released. There you have it! There are two approaches to the installation of a block and bleed or a double block and bleed setup. Well, let's look at both together. We start with the conventional system. The conventional system connects multiple valves and fittings together to create the block and bleed setup that connects a process line to a pressure transmitter or pressure gauge. The double block and bleed isolation, for the pressure transmitter or pressure gauge, is achieved by using three separate valves between the transmitter and the process line. But there is a second isolation method, the so-called close-coupled installation. The close-coupled installation creates a direct, minimal link between the process and instrument by replacing multiple valves and fittings with an integrated instrument mounting product. This saves time and costs during installation and reduces the number of potential leak paths. By placing the instrument, such as a pressure transmitter or pressure gauge, closer to the process, the close-coupled installation is up to 60% smaller and up to 50% lighter than a conventional assembly. There are two industry standards for an integrated process to instrument product that integrate … • block • block and bleed, or • double block and bleed … valve functionality in a monoblock design. A distinction is made between monoflanges and slimline monoflanges. Monoflanges use ball valves on the isolation valve and can either use a ball valve or a needle valve for the vent valve. The valves are roddable, which is a good choice in potentially clogging service. The positions of the handles provide a quick indication of whether the valves are open or closed. Slimline Monoflanges use needle valves on the isolation valve and the vent valve. Slimeline Monoflanges are typically used in clean service and are the most compact and cost-effective way to perform a pressure measurement. Slimeline Monoflanges can also be easily configured for high temperatures applications (up to 550°C). But when to use a monoflange or a slimline monoflange? Parts Compatibility The selection of a suitable hydrogen valve depends on the functionality of its components. For that reason, it is vital to ensure that non-metallic materials like the seals are compatible with the hydrogen medium. As for the seals, the choice of design / components depends on whether the valve is used in an ● open environment or ● closed environment In the case the valve is mounted in an open, ventilated hydrogen application, there is no risk of an explosive atmosphere, and the escaping hydrogen is harmless to the environment. Here you can use Standard Valve Head Units. On the contrary, when the valve is mounted in a closed, non-ventilated environment, then increased tightness requirements apply. In these applications, it is better to check with a specialist. Most of the time, TA-Luft compliant or Bellows Sealed Valve Head Unit is the solution. 4. Testing method Testing of instruments and process valves that use hydrogen as a medium also depends on whether the valve is used in an open or closed environment. First of all, the purpose of adding support collar is to achieve the probe length according to end user requirement, for maximum insertion into the pipeline. In addition, it should be ensured that the unsupported length of the probe is within the tolerance limits of the wake frequency calculation. How to achieve both requirements? To fulfill both purposes, the support collar needs to be fitted tightly within the flange. The tolerances of the inner flange diameters are quite large. However, if the flange bore is now below the upper tolerance, a gap between the support collar and the flange is the result. Thereby, we recommend manufacturing a support collar which is approx. 1-2 mm larger than the maximum specified inner flange diameter. On site, the installer will place the injection or sampling DBB valve on top of the flangeolet and evenly cut off some material from the 4-point collar so that the collar achieves the tightest possible fit within the flangeolet.
