The song is in part inspired by the story of the 1789 Women’s March on Versailles; a spontaneous protest lead by the women working in Paris’s marketplaces fueled by the high price of bread. They marched for six hours to demand the king in Versailles return to Paris. Eventually joined by thousands of people, the march ended in a violent riot and became a flashpoint for the coming revolution. Designed by Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes and built 1999, the crematorium’s architecture was inspired by Egyptian temples. The hall of mourning has a natural reverb of eight seconds, making it both a unique and challenging space for a choir of eight voices to perform. From Kat: When B O D I E S was created in 2019 we had no idea how well it would be received. As we put our first tour together, Konzerthaus Dortmund was the first venue to give us a chance, and soon venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and RBB Sendesaal followed. The tour took place in January 2020: it was totally sold out, the music was a joy to perform and the audiences were truly wonderful. So when the pandemic arrived, apart from the uncertainty and fear everyone was of course feeling, it was extra heart-breaking to put a stop to all we had planned. This is a little video about that first journey, from odd rehearsal spaces in Berlin all the way to the Elbphilharmonie. The show is of course much more than a pop song, it’s mostly built around (unreleased) compositions that I’ve created especially for the ensemble, but I wouldn’t be where I am today with out this tune. I’m so excited that after all this time, B O D I E S will return to the stage this October. Hope you enjoy the video. K.
