She had been in a van with three other occupants when it was pulled over by police on a tip from a 911 caller that it was involved in a hit-and-run. The two were speaking in the area of Berkeley Road and Denton Avenue, about seven miles or 11 kilometers south from the scene of the incident where an older woman was critically injured after being struck by the vehicle. “I was curled up in the backseat,” Kimberly told the detective. She said her boyfriend, who was the driver, and two other friends got into the van after visiting the home of Hunter Penton, a fellow student at Auburndale High School. After putting the car in drive, she said her boyfriend took a left turn out of the spot they parked at, which was partially on the grass directly across the street from the home. “That’s when Hunter’s mom walked out and we didn’t have time to stop,” an emotional Kimberly said during the seven-minute interview. “And the van, it just, it just hit her. “I feel so bad because she would let me into her house and she fed me,” Kimberly said, referring to 52-year-old Suzette Penton. “And she was like my mom when my mom left me. And I just sat there and watched and I couldn’t do anything.” She said they didn’t know in the moment whether to stop or keep going after realizing they had hit Suzette. But they kept going anyway. Suzette was laying facedown and motionless on the pavement. She was rushed to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in life-threatening condition with a fractured skull, severe brain bleeding and a broken leg. She was put in the intensive care unit. Within the space of three weeks, investigators were able to quickly piece together the story of how this all happened. Was it a freak accident or something more? The answer to that question, according to investigators, would come relatively quickly. It was after 6:20 pm on this rainy Texas night when police arrived at the Seegan home to find the farewell note on a desk next to James, who was seated on an office chair with his head slumped back and to the left, blood pooling underneath his chair with some spatter on the nearby open closet door. James had been clutching the 9mm handgun in his left hand, which was resting on his lap. On James’s phone were several missed calls going back to at least 11:08 am, indicating that he could have been dead for hours. One of those missed calls came from his son’s school, Country Place Elementary. Dida, who was working that day as a massage therapist, got a call from the school at just before 4 pm telling her that Josh hadn’t been picked up. This was odd because James was always prompt. In fact, the late-in-life father retired for the express purpose of spending more time with Josh, including taking him to and from school every day. She told the school to wait; she’d try calling James herself. Her attempts, however, failed. Perhaps he’s in a meeting, she tried convincing herself. That’s until the school called a second time telling her Josh was still at school. Sakdida did the 40-minute drive to the school, her mind creating more excuses for why James, for the first time, wasn’t already there. But no excuses fit the profile of the organized James Seegan. It’s the afternoon of August 29th, 2016. Detained in another room is a man investigators believe was involved in the disappearance of 35-year-old Stephanie Pytash in Steubenville, Ohio. The law states that they can only hold this man for 72 hours before they must charge or release him. The concern is one, he’ll flee; or worse, two, he’ll hurt Summer when they release her and then he’ll flee. We are dealing with a certain underbelly of Ohio: thieves, druggies, and prostitution. Summer, in other words, has every reason to fear repercussions for ratting out her fellow drug user. The unit had no electricity, so he had to use his phone’s flashlight to illuminate the path in front of him. That’s when, at around 4 am, he saw and walked around what he thought was an older woman in her 40s laying face up, arms and legs spread eagle, in the middle of the living room floor. “It was bad,” he would later say in court. “It was blood and stuff. No eyes.” Arturo said he ran to a friend’s apartment, the occupants of which included two military brothers who were often compared to Duck Dynasty characters because of their unusually long beards. One of the brothers went inside of the abandoned apartment, saw that “she didn’t have a face,” felt for a pulse, and immediately called emergency services. But Arturo didn’t stick around. Before he left, he told the brothers not to tell the police he was there at all. While Arturo left the scene, the scene didn’t leave him. Shortly after getting home, he logged into his Facebook and saw Jose online. “Damn bro guess what,” Arturo told Jose. “Do you see the apartment that’s vacant,” Arturo added in Spanish, knowing that Jose had been to that unit before. “I went right now and I was going to smoke my joint. And fuck, there was a naked lady lying in the ground dead.” “What the fuck? Swear?” responds Jose, who afterward sent a screenshot of the conversation to Victor. Arturo was both right and wrong.
