Due to a very dry summer and autumn in Perth, local fire danger restrictions have prevented us from running steam-hauled trains, but recent rains have lowered the fire danger to acceptable levels. A modification to the locomotive has been made whereby the exhaust steam from the train brake (the ejector) has been plumbed into the locomotive smokebox, resulting in much quieter operation. Thanks to member David N. for his excellent design work on this modification. This video has no sound. This is footage of the Orenstein& Koppel built 0-4-4-0T Mallet "Magnet 3", originally purchased for the Magnet Silver Mining Company tramway, located near Waratah, Tasmania. The locomotive builder number is 2609 and it was built in 1907. After the closure of the tramway in the 1930s, the locomotive was eventually sold to the Great Boulder Gold Mine, located in Kalgoorlie - Boulder, Western Australia. It is at the Great Boulder mine that this film was taken, probably in the 1950s. The Bennett Brook Railway is currently in the process of preparing a grant proposal to finish the restoration of the Mallet.
