I can't tell you how many times I have been asked, specifically by non-Christians, why I choose to believe the Bible. When I began to walk with Christ truly, I could only answer this question from a purely emotional position, like many of the answers the Pastor gives here. However, after studying scripture to get to know the sovereign God of the universe and His plan and purpose for our lives, I found that the emotional position is insufficient. Let me be clear: the position was inadequate to undertake the great task before me. For this reason, I believe Christians should be able to give a well-thought-out, reasoned response for the hope within them. I believe God calls us to be able to respond and equip us with His Word to answer this question. We are continuing our study in Mark's Gospel; we will pick up chapter 4 later in the week. However, before we do that, we must refocus our minds regarding Christ's use of parables as a teaching tool. Even though Christ has an overwhelmingly impactful ministry, the religious elite are unhappy with Him. They keep throwing out false allegations, like Demons possess Him, to discourage His popularity, but it’s not working. The real problem with the religious elite is they are overrun by legalism, jealousy, and envy, and that has led them to set out to kill Christ. As we will see, this has caused Christ to use parables. Essentially, the parable is a simple story that all the hearers would have understood. However, the underlying meaning would have been missed by many because of the soil – the different heart conditions. We looked at verses 10 - 12, where Christ spoke about the mysteries of the Kingdom, further explaining the purpose of the parables. The mystery is, “The power and the presence of the Kingdom of God are breaking into human history through the words and deeds of Jesus the Messiah.” Those who remained outside would only hear a story while having the same information they would not see, hear, or understand. Today, we will examine the rocky soil to understand the spiritual condition of people in this category. We will continue examining Jesus’ explanation of the parable to His followers and the twelve disciples. We will continue the process of looking across the gospel texts. They are characterized by responding favorably to the message but cannot withstand the trials that all believers are warned will come. The commentary makes note of the popular masses that followed Jesus—those who went for the healings, the exorcism, and the free fish and bread. Difficult teaching will run them away; at some point, the price of following Christ becomes too high for most to continue pursuing Him. A theme should be arising. We should see that inadequate soil conditions and external threats make an unreceptive hearer. So far, we’ve had a heart hardened by sin (wayside soil) and a heart that can’t withstand the heat that comes with following Christ in the form of trials and persecution (rocky soil).
