Channel Title: Black Flag Leather Goods Channel Description: My name is Tim. I am the founder and leather crafter behind Black Flag Leather Goods. In July of 2020, I ordered a basic leatherworking kit from Amazon and my first order of leather. The quality of the tools was poor at best, but it didn’t matter; I was hooked right from the first cut I made. My first piece looked the same as every leather worker’s first: a rectangular bifold wallet made of cheap leather with uneven stitch lines, crooked cuts, and the ugliest saddle stitching you can imagine. From there, every hole punched, every stitch I’ve made, and edge burnished has been a learning experience. With the help of an experienced crafter and amazing friend, the quality of each piece I created was noticeably better. Before long, I had people inquiring about my creations. This is the first leather wallet I ever made. It features some mystery box leather I got from @oaleathersupply, used all Amazon leather tools, and the absolute worst waxed thread I've ever seen. Still, this is what got me started at a time when I was looking for a quiet hobby to do while my then newborn daughter was napping. I didn't realize how loud punching stitching holes would be so I had to go do that on the floor of the garage. Now she is standing behind the camera in almost every video "helping". </video> <video> This Punching Board Will FIX your Saddle Stitch! Description: I've been using this thin rubber punching mat since I started leather working. It worked absolutely fine... Until it didn't. And "fine" is not the standard that I generally reach for in my leather work. In a world of cool designs, glass edges, and amazing leathers, your stitching should be on point. After making the switch to the OKA Punching Board, it became pretty clear that this was a missing piece of the puzzle. My stitching immediately looked better and was easier to do. When you start leather working, usually your saddle stitch doesn't quite look right. After hours of practice getting the technique down, it should improve. But you'll also find that the holes you punch drastically affect the look of your stitch line. Once you upgrade your stitching punch/chisel/irons/whatever, you'll likely see a huge quality improvement (assuming you started with a cheap, lower quality punch). The mat you punch on, turns out, plays an important role in these stitching holes looking more uniform. Especially on the back side. It seems obvious now that I think about it, but I never gave it much thought before I started having issues with the old Amazon one. Now you can definitely get away with using the rubber Amazon mats. They do work pretty well for a bit (still not as good as the OKA board). But if you go this route, I'd recommend replacing it more than I did. The issue starts popping up as it gets weakened through regular use. Alright! Printing out paper templates works well, but if it's something that you're making over and over again, it's just easier to have a hard, reusable template that you can toss down on your leather and trace out. Especially in the case of a template such as this sunglasses case, where it is bigger than a sheet of paper so you have to cut out and tape two pieces of template together before you can use it. The acrylic pieces just fit together and you're ready to go. There are several different patterns of mine available from Hand & Sew. Generally when I'm prepping my edges I go through 220, 320, 400, 600, 800 grits. If I'm going for a glass edge, I go further into sandpaper grits, using 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 3200, 3400, 4000, 6000, 8000, 10000, 12000. If you want a tutorial on how to get the glass edge, check out my video on it here: https://youtu.be/4c7Q5mVARMk Anyway, I buy packs of sandpaper from Amazon. It's the cheapest place to get them. I fold the different grits into squares and just binder clip them together in order. You definitely don't need to use the gum sole every time, but once your sandpaper gets bunged up, a quick rub on the gum takes those leather bits right out. It makes it almost as good as new. Again, I can't quite remember who told me about this hack, but I think it was @bbrachman. My name is Tim. I am the founder and leather crafter behind Black Flag Leather Goods.

In July of 2020, I ordered a basic leatherworking kit from Amazon and my first order of leather. The quality of the tools was poor at best, but it didn’t matter; I was hooked right from the first cut I made.

My first piece looked the same as every leather worker’s first: a rectangular bifold wallet made of cheap leather with uneven stitch lines, crooked cuts, and the ugliest saddle stitching you can imagine. From there, every hole punched, every stitch I’ve made, and edge burnished has been a learning experience. With the help of an experienced crafter and amazing friend, the quality of each piece I created was noticeably better. Before long, I had people inquiring about my creations. And now that I've learned quite a bit from the leatherworking community, I want to pay it forward in the form of this YouTube channel to help others.
