Buddha Amitabha's beautiful root mantra chanted in Sanskrit is a complete and virtuous practice by itself, especially on Lotus Day (Full Moon). Many people simply chant his mantra mindfully every day as a complete practice. His mantra connects us to the Buddha of Infinite Light, Amitabha. Who is Amitabha, the Limitless? Buddha Shakyamuni explains in the Amitabha Sutra: “…why is this Buddha called Amitabha? The light of this Buddha is infinite, and shines on all lands throughout the universe without obstruction. Thus this Buddha is called Amitabha. Also, the life span of this Buddha and his people is an infinite number of immeasurable eons, and so he is called Amitabha. Amitabha Buddha attained enlightenment ten eons ago.” Buddha also explains the benefits in the same Sutra: “If there are good men or good women who hear of Amitabha Buddha, and recite his name single mindedly and without confusion, for one day or two days or three days or four days or five days or six days or seven days, then when these people are about to die, Amitabha Buddha and all the sages who are with him will appear before them. When these people die, their minds will not fall into delusion, and they will attain rebirth in Amitabha Buddha’s Land of Ultimate Bliss. I have seen this benefit, and so I speak these words. If sentient beings hear what I say, they must make a vow to be born in that land.” — Shakyamuni Buddha in the Amitabha Sutra. The mantra, Om Ami Deva Hri is the short heart mantra of Amitabha Buddha. This is a Sutra mantra, as taught by Buddha, and is considered to bring limitless blessings and merits, including purification of negative Karmas and planting the seeds of rebirth in the glorious Pureland of Sukhavati (Western Pureland of Amitabha). FROM LONGCHENPA'S INSTRUCTION the meaning: Although all Tara mantras are very powerful, this mantra includes the Sanskrit "mam" meaning "myself" or "me" so it is a direct supplication to Mother Tara. UPAKRAMA means "commence" or "start" RAKSHA RAKSHA means "protect! protect" so the meaning is Tara, please protect me." When chanting you can substitute a persons name for "Mama" according to some teachers. EIGHT DANGERS AND FEARS: This is meant to include all dangers, poisons and fears, but is traditionally described in commentaries as: lions (pride), wild elephants (ignorance), fire (anger), snakes (jealousy), floods (attachment), imprisonment (miserliness), thieves (wrong views) and cannibals (doubt). Lama Zopa Rinpoche describes her: "At the heart her fingers, Adorn her with Three Jewel mudra! Light-ray masses all excited! All directions’ wheels adorn her! ...Tara Who Protects from All Fears (Jikpa Kunkyob Ma), white in color, her gesture signifying the Three Rare Sublime Ones. She holds a white flask containing nectar whose function is to protect all sentient beings from fear and dangers. Appearances and existence, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are empty by nature. Realizing this, within that state of emptiness, I visualize a glowing, illuminated white om syllable, on a shining lotus throne. White light,  the essence of all the Buddhas, emanates from the Om syllable, going out as an offering to all the Enlightened Beings. The light purifies all impurities of all sentient beings, and blesses them. The lights return to the Om syllable, and transforms into glorious Vairochana, White in Color, seated upon a lotus and moon in infinite space, the center of the entire Universe. I see luminous Vairochana Buddha, the nature of light, peaceful and loving. He is seated in the lotus posture, with his two hands in the Wheel Turning Mudra or holding the Eight-Spoked Dharma Wheel. At his heart is the Om syllable, glowing white. From this syllable, once again lights go out to all of the universe, first out to his Pureland Akanishta-Ghanavyuha, then to every Pureland of every Buddha and finally to all beings in samsara in every dimension and universe. The sacred light of Vairochana's blessings is an offering to all the Enlightened ones, and blesses all beings of Samsara.  Now I recite Vairochana's supreme purifying and blessing mantra, while visualizing purifying white light from Vairochana’s heart going out constantly to all sentient beings, and then returning to my own heart, blessing me. Tare, liberates and saves us from suffering in Samsara -- the suffering of this world and all six dimensions. Tuttare liberates us from the 8 inner dangers, 8 external types of dangers and 8 supernatural dangers. Ture, liberates us from disease. It is described in the Heart Sutra as the Maha Vidya, the Great Wisdom. “Maha” means “great” and “Vidya” translates as “knowledge” or “science” or “wisdom” The mantra itself more ore less translates as: -Gate means gone. -Paragate signifies gone to the further shore and is a traditional Sanskrit expression used by Buddhists and Jains to refer to arahants. (The word para signifies the bank of a river opposite to the one on which one is presently standing. -Parasamgate signifies completely gone to the further shore. (The syllable sam means: altogether, thoroughly, or completely.) -Bodhi is a feminine noun that signifies awakening, knowledge and enlightenment. -The syllable Svaha is multilayered, but basically, it’s saying “let it be so” or “may it be so” or more literally “thus, it is.” We dedicate the merit of this mantra performance and video to the cause for Enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. Tara is transmitting the mantra in the Sutra at the request of Avalokiteshvara to an audience of Bodhisattvas and Sangha. This homage translates as: “oṁ! Homage to Noble Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva mahāsattva, the great compassionate one!” THEN THE DHARANI BEGINS WITH tadyathā Tadyathā means “it is like this,” or “thus it is” indicating that what follows is the actual Dharani. NEXT IS THE REQUEST FOR ACTIVITIES FROM TARA: oṁ tāre tuttāre ture sarva­duṣṭān praduṣṭān mama kṛte jambhaya stambhaya mohaya bandhaya hūṁ hūṁ hūṁ phaṭ phaṭ phaṭ svāhā This is a request to Tārā to dispel obstacles through her supreme activities. It is often used as a stand-alone Dharani. This translates as: “oṁ! Deliverer! Savior! Swift One! Crush, suppress, confound, restrain all the wrong and evil beings for me! hūṁ hūṁ hūṁ phaṭ phaṭ phaṭ svāhā!” SUPPLICATION After the Activity invocation, is the supplication or prayer: nama āryāvalobhayā narā bodhisattvā mahā­sattvāni adhiṣṭhānādhiṣṭhite mama sarva­karmāvaraṇa svabhāva­śuddhe viśuddhe śodhaya viśodhaya hūṁ phaṭ svāhā The final segment of this dhāraṇī is a supplication or request to Tārā to purify all of our obscurations and negativities. This can be translated as: “Homage to you (Tara), empowered with the blessing of Noble Avalokita, the great bodhisattva mahāsattva! Purify, completely purify, cleanse, and completely clean all my karmic obscurations! hūṁ phaṭ svāhā!” Mother Tara protects us from the Eight Dangers or Fears, including diseases and epidemics. The Eight Dangers and fears include all dangers and fears: 8 outer, 8 inner and 8 secret dangers. This relates to the commentary teachings: 1. Outer, 2. Inner, and 3. Secret. The outer meaning of the eight fears are real fears experienced which are given in the Sutra by way of examples (for example "lion's" representing wild animals" and "water" representing all dangers from the environment (flooding, typhoon, drought). The outer relates to the physical person and the fears presented in a physical material world. The inner meaning relates to passions, ego and negative emotional characteristics. (we can say inner demons: for example, anger is considered to manifest as a "demon" or mara). The inner meaning relates to the mental world. The secret meaning has to do with specific advanced Vajrayana teachings, commitments and so on -- which help us transform these negative mental states into enlightened, or realized, states. For example, keeping the precepts and also the Vajrayana Vows (the vows to the Five Buddha Families.) The danger is, if we forget the precepts, we accumulate negative karma and obstacles. The four kings swore to protect the Dharma in front of Shakyamuni Buddha, and because of this unbreakable vow, they are unshakable in their protection of the Dharma and Buddhist practitioners. They are considered worldly, because they remain part of our samsaric world of suffering, offering protection to Dharma practitioners. We honor them after taking Refuge first in the Three Jewels, and especially make offerings to them on the 29th of the lunar month, known as Protector Puja Day. Vaishravana, especially, is the best known as the leader of the Four Kings, treasured for his oath to protect the wealth and safety of Buddhists, and to support the Dharma practitioner materially. He also protects against harm, obstacles, enemies and other causes of suffering that distract us from Dharma practice. HIS PRACTICE OFFERINGS ARE THE FOUR GENEROSITIES: Giving material things and helping others. Giving the Dharma: Sharing teachings and advice. Ksitigarbha staff symbolizes his connection to the earth and it is also the implement he uses to open the portals between the six worlds. Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is one of the most popular and beloved Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. This is because his great vow to save all beings from suffering resonates with so many people. Kṣitigarbha is also known as the “Bodhisattva of Compassion” because of his boundless compassion for all beings. When we recite Kṣitigarbha’s Fundamental Vow, we are reminded of our own potential to make a difference in the world and to help those who are suffering. He is also associated with rescues and averting dangers; often his mantra is chanted to help avert natural disasters (see the section below on “Natural Disasters. According to tradition and Sutra teachings, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva — also known as Jizo in Japan, or Dìzàng in Chinese Buddhism — will be the most active of the Bodhisattvas in the time between the Nirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha and the rise of the next Buddha Maitreya. For these reasons, and his closeness to our world, he is called the Earth Treasury Bodhisattva (or Earth Store Bodhisattva). In times of natural disaster, such as earthquakes, climate change, hurricanes, and epidemics, teachers such as Lama Zopa Rinpoche recommend his meditation and mantra. The mantra and his Dharani contain the essence of recitation of the Eight Names of Kṣitigarbha and Ten Wheels Sutra. He is also widely treasured because he is an unfailing friend and hero, rescuing those suffering from negative karmas and hell realms. He is praised and honored in most traditions of Mahayana Buddhism, because of his great vows to save all sentient beings from suffering.
