I'm setting up the tank in this video to be a breeding tank for the white and red shrimp. I've done very well with the blue morph, in another tank. Through the summer and early fall months, this tank was somewhat neglected in terms of "display," though functionally the plants did well and so did the shrimp. I ran a cycle of water boatmen through it previously, and the pink ramshorn snails are busy at work, cleaning up their remains. Now that winter is coming on, I'm spending more time indoors again and going to be working to beautify this tank. My goals are to clean up the green algae floating in the water, and the fibrous mats of algae that have begun to form elsewhere. And then I plan to transfer a few more plants to the tank to fill out the lower layers. Often, as the plants in the tank grow, I cut their tops off and poke them back into the substrate. The cuttings will root again and then the lower levels of the tank will look lush and green again. But I like spacing. Too much veg on the bottom, and I can't see the bugs! After the beetles have done their jobs, I'll move them on to another tank. The shrimp, after all, like algae. There will still be plenty of it for them in the tank. It just won't be as visible in my eye. I don't run the bubbler all the time but do so occasionally to help break up the thin film layer that sometimes forms on the surface of the water. This helps with gas transfer, I believe, which in turns helps everything else in this little ecosystem.
