This is one of the least travelled, wettest and muddiest hikes in Australia. As usual, we'd been monitoring the weather weeks in advance and chose a window of clear skies. If you hike the Port Davey Track during, or after a rainy period, the track can become impassable. But there are stories of hikers carrying pack rafts and just paddling through the flooded swamp sections. Crossing The Narrows at Bathurst Harbour is NOT to be treated lightly. Many trekkers have been stuck here, or have been pushed far away into the harbor by the current, there's been many instances of helicopter rescue. We recommend that you only attempt to cross when the water is very calm. On the 7th night we stayed in a hut at Melaleuca airstrip while we waited for the airplane to arrive the next morning. Anyone who has done intense multi-day hikes in SW Tassie will never forget it; a part of their mind will always remain there. Federation Peak is the most visually prominent mountain of the whole area. We start this video with a WARNING that quotes Coroner Simon Cooper who investigated the death of Melissa Fisher, this is to highlight the seriousness of the level of danger at Federation Peak. DO NOT try to climb Fed Peak unprepared, this is an extremely dangerous challenge. We set out to attempt the final summit on a day of almost zero wind and zero rainfall. The main route up, is on the South side of the mountain meaning no direct sunlight. Because there was no wind the day we made our attempt, the rocks were still damp from the mist of the night before. Had there been a slight breeze we may have been able to complete the climb, but with the rocks slightly damp, we had to decide to turn back and abort. We have successfully summited over 300 mountain peaks, choosing to sometimes turn back is a crucial decision to know when to make. In July this year another hiker from New Zealand who was attempting the whole Eastern Arthur Traverse died at Fed Peak, Police were unable to retrieve his body until many days later. The exposed sections of Federation Peak are no joke, because it is such a long arduous journey to the rocky section, very few groups will bother to carry in rock climbing equipment. But to anyone attempting Fed Peak, I would be taking a pair of rock-climbing shoes to improve your grip on the steep sections. River Boarding is a niche watersport that can only be done safely in certain sections of deep, white water. It's not safe to do River Boarding in shallow rivers with many rocky obstacles. The location of this video is near Queenstown on the south Island of New Zealand. You need a river guide, boogie board, life jacket, full body wetsuit, helmet and flippers. Our group consisted of about 10 people, including our 2 guides. At 6:11 you will see the "point of no return," at this spot the guides pull everybody over to warn them that, "if you want to bail out, now is your last chance." Two members of our group bailed out here and gave up; do not underestimate this sport, you can be sucked underwater by whirlpools and you will have some very tired muscles very quickly:) At 1:04 you'll notice I stopping moving and I'm spinning a bit; this is a mini whirlpool. One other member of our group was fully sucked underwater. There is only one company that is qualified to guide you down this river, they are extremely capable and fit and they have never had a fatality. The guides are basically whitewater life guards and are exceptional swimmers. The Western Arthurs Traverse (WAT) is regarded by many as Australia’s most challenging multi-day hike. On this trail there is the opportunity to summit many different peaks. Some groups will complete the whole Western Arthurs circuit in 4-5 days. We set out with 8 days of supplies and then made the conscious decision on Day 3 that we would need to start rationing our supplies to last 9-10 days. Due to the wind direction, most groups will do the trek in a west to east direction. Many attempts on the WAT fail due to the weather, we had been monitoring the weather for about a week prior and headed into the track with a clear forecast of minimal rain. In the wrong weather conditions, Western Arthurs is an extremely dangerous trail and should not be attempted in winter or heavy rain. There are some tales of winter attempts on WAT; they are all horror stories. There are countless instances of injury, death, and emergency rescues on WAT. A trip to WAT should be planned carefully. PACK HAULING The Western Arthurs is known for its numerous sections of “pack hauling.” Pack hauling is when you must take your backpack off and lift it up through a technical section or lower it down by rope. One of the main questions asked about the WAT hike is, “how much pack hauling rope will I need.” A 4mm thick gear rope that’s about 6 metres long should be enough; mostly you will be lowering your pack downwards. This hike starts on the Port Davey Track that you may have seen in one of our previous videos. This was at about 6am in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. We beleive there was a Leopard den underneath the road, the smell of rotten meat was in the air. The Leopard in the video is young and not fully grown. This kind of footage is extremly rare, Hyenas are in abundance, but Leopards are very elusive and quite difficult to spot.
