A short film created by BYU animation students was recognized as a Student Academy Award bronze winner recently at an event in London. BYU is the first school from the U.S. to win a Student Academy Award since the competition went international. The film, “Student Accomplice,” depicts a nervous teenage girl taking her driving test with an old, placid driving instructor. The test goes awry when a bank robber hijacks the car to elude the police. Viewers enjoy the ride-along view inside the car as the flustered robber urges the girl to leave the police behind while the perplexed instructor looks on. Directed by BYU animation student Spencer Baird and produced by Brielle Hansen, the film is full of sharp twists of laughter and suspense. “We had lots of opportunities to be creative with ‘Student Accomplice,’ which was fun for us,” Baird said. “There’s a lot of hilarity and complexity layered in. It’s fast-paced in a very delightful way.” The award is another recognition for BYU’s highly decorated animation program. Earlier this year, the student film “The Witch’s Cat” won a Student Emmy. But bringing “Student Accomplice” to life presented a bigger challenge than any previous film. Animating an entire city was a heavy lift, and students were forced to design a large set and pay particular attention to details in the backgrounds of the various scenes. “To make a city look full and lived in, we couldn’t get away without background characters and filling the city with lots of interesting things and background cars,” Hansen said. “All of those details, like trash on the sidewalk and leaves flying through the air, made it feel realistic.” More than 30 students contributed to the film — skills from animation, design, commercial music and computer science played crucial roles to bring more than 7,000 individual images together in a cohesive animation. “Everything from the design of things, the lighting and texture and the effects that are in the film comes together in a beautiful way that’s pushed boundaries for what our student films have done,” said BYU animation professor Nathan Lindsay. “I think it catches the eye of the industry because we’re doing things that take a big team to accomplish, and it’s not normal for students to pull off something of this caliber.” Hansen says the recognition BYU animation students and graduates receive in the filmmaking industry is a reflection on the values of the university and the environment in which they study, where faith and inquiry are complementary. “There were a lot of faith-filled actions that we took, like not working on Sunday and having prayer before our meetings,” she said. “It was small and simple things that we did together over a year and a half. We had so much fun, and it was so special.” Baird says he’s grateful for the expert animation faculty at BYU such as Lindsay and Kelly Loosli, who are widely recognized industry professionals, for giving them hands-on opportunities to take the lead on projects. “I think that says a lot about the faculty. They trust us and they trust in the process. An interdisciplinary research team from BYU included public health, cell biology, nursing and engineering students, who are working with local Nepali leadership, as well as colleagues from the University of Utah, Kathmandu University and the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences. "The Courageous Kids Invitational is an amazing event where we celebrate some amazing kids that have gone or are going through some very hard challenges," said BYU director of track and field Ed Eyestone. "The families behind these children also are incredible. I'm very grateful for my athletes to interact with these remarkable people at an event like this." The invitational, which allows kids of all abilities to run and participate in track and field events alongside collegiate athletes, is a favorite service event for BYU student-athletes. Background on Courageous Kids Invitational: Tammy (Kirby) Bowers, a former BYU pole vaulter (2000-02), teamed-up with the Cougar track and field program to found the event in 2011. Bowers and former BYU multi-athlete Marsha Mark (1996-98) have combined to organize Courageous Kids nearly each year since. The 2024 invitatational celebrated Liam Losee, a 10-year old who has down syndrome. Liam enjoys running and competing in the annual event. For more information, see jimmerosity.org. </video> <video> Photographer Seeks Healing Through Art Description: BYU alum’s project brings Native American traditions to the forefront Fueled by a connection to his ancestors and culture, recent BYU grad Eugene Tapahe is on a mission to heal hearts through Native American dance. Tapahe, an award-winning photographer and member of the Diné Navajo nation, says he was inspired to launch a new project during the pandemic – a time of uncertainty for many people around the globe. His newly created project, Art Heals: The Jingle Dress Project, was based off a Native American traditional dance of healing. With his daughters Dion and Erin as dancers, Tapahe traveled to significant indigenous sites to photograph the dance. Each dancer’s clothing was lined with small metal cones that created harmony and energy as the dance was performed. Since 2020, the ethereal chimes of the jingle dress—each sound symbolizing a prayer—have resonated throughout 150 locations including national parks, universities, and communities. Tapahe says the experience has been rejuvenating and he’s been inspired by the way audiences have received his work and shown interest in learning about Native American traditions and current issues. “When you're trying to make a difference, I've realized that the more I can touch people's hearts and be able to change hearts, that will also change minds too,” said Tapahe. After graduating from BYU in 1992 with a degree in graphic design, Tapahe was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, thanks in part to the examples of friends he developed during his time as a student. “I wanted my daughters to have more than what I could give them,” he said. “I wanted them to have that spiritual feeling in their lives.” Tapahe returned to BYU and received a master's degree in fine arts from BYU last April. In a Nov. 2 video post, Rober spotlights the chair at #7 on his list of Crunch Lab builds in the past year, and credits BYU compliant mechanisms researchers for the innovative design. “What makes it really cool is it’s made from one single sheet of continuous plywood,” Rober, a BYU mechanical engineering graduate, told 58 million subscribers. “It’s weird to think of wood as foldable and bendy, but this is another example of a compliant mechanism.” Compliant mechanisms, based on the bends and folds of origami, create movement without hinges or joints, making them useful in various applications. The Flex Chair, created by BYU design professor David C. Morgan and his students, incorporates research from BYU’s Compliant Mechanisms Research Group, led by BYU mechanical engineering professor Larry Howell. The surface of the Flex Chair is cut into a specific tessellated pattern, patented by BYU, that allows a rigid material like wood or acrylic to fold and bend, yet still maintain its strength. “On the engineering side, this is a great demonstration of the fundamental theory that we’ve developed in compliant mechanisms, particularly lamina emergent torsion (LET) joints. The collaboration with the Department of Design made it possible to not just show it in some generic device, but in what turned out to be a really cool product,” said Howell, whose compliant mechanisms research has included everything from solar arrays for NASA to microscopic surgical devices to ballistic barriers. For Morgan, the Flex Chair is not only visually interesting design, it is also fabricated in a unique way, so that consumers are invested in the product. “Research shows that many people place a higher value on their things if they have some role in creating them. In the literature it’s sometimes called the IKEA effect. So folding the Flex furniture may create in the consumer a connection that we hope will encourage them to hang on to their stuff longer, reducing needless consumption and waste.” Morgan and design students, now a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, showed their designs at Milan Design Week, and have launched Wasatch Design Collective, a co-op of industrial designers, to share their products. Rober was first impressed by the Flex Chair when he saw it on campus, while working with BYU engineers on a unique microscopic Nerf gun compliant mechanism project. On his channel, Rober also shared free downloadable designs from BYU so people can 3D print miniature versions of the Flex Chair and learn more about the research.
