This entry is number 3 on our list. We dubbed this one "the back way to Bodie" as it's not the common way into town that most would take. The route we took starts right outside of Bridgeport, CA and passes two amazing ghost towns along the route: Chemung and Masonic. These were two mining towns that ran in the early 1900's. Chemung in particular has amazingly preserved stuctures, namely the mill. Might be one of the best preserved structures of this sort we've seen on our travels. The road to Bodie was easy to navigate and was not technically challenging, and it felt good to roll into town coming on this way. The Bunkerville Choo Choo route, as someone named in On X Offroad, is a series of old mining roads that traverse the landscape in front of the Virgin Mountains. You'll climb rolling foothills covered in brush and yucca. When you reach higher elevations, you'll encounter lush forests of Joshua Trees. There's a section called the Seeps that is a short, tight canyon, with a rock ledge a little over a foot tall that requires clearance. The best part of the route for us was Keyhole Rock, a unique feature that has amazing views no matter where you look. Near the end we found the thing the route was named after... an old railroad car with a tank that was hauled up here to store water for roaming cattle. Located in southern Arizona, a good starting point for this one is in Patagonia, Arizona. The route follows a forest road through beautiful rolling hills and ranch land on the western side of the Santa Rita Mountains. There's lots of history along the way, including the ghost town of Salero (located on a private ranch and off limits (except we launched our drone from public land to sneak a peek), and the former site of Alto. Both locations have history that traces back to the Spanish and mining in the area. The route has great views and great historical interest. This year's honor goes to the state of Nevada, and it's colorful Logandale Trail System. This is one of the few times we'll say it, but we don't see how it's possible, or a good idea at least, to take anything other than a 4 x 4 back on these trails because of the deep sand you'll encounter. You might even want lockers in case you really get stuck or have issues. We even encountered one spot we were unsure we could get through, but we persisted. There's also a need for clearance, as you'll encounter one drop. We barely scratched out hitch doing it and caused no damage, but was cutting it close for our stock Chevy ZR2. But for those who can do it, you'll be treated to one of the most colorful landscapes you can imagine. You may even think you've landed on Mars! This is number 5, titled the Old China Dam and Tule Homestead. We have never found definitive info about either the dam or the homestead, but think the homestead was built in the 1920's, and have no idea about the dam, but it's clearly old. To get to these you'll navigate old mining roads north of Lake Pleasant, in the Phoenix metro area.
