Description: Plastic Free Friendship - Episode 2 - This episode the students from Iriomote Island showed us around their school and their island. Where is it coming from? Description: Plastic Free Friendship - Episode 3 - Now that we’ve learned more about each other, let's learn about the trash that washes up on our beaches! Each of our schools took videos where they went to their closest beaches and picked up plastic waste. The students from Iriomote Island created a really interesting sorting system where they were able to differentiate which country the trash originated from. The students from NYC were able to go to the beach at Jamaica bay in New York City where they found a lot of plastic waste and even a horseshoe crab! This series showcases Cafeteria Culture’s global exchange between students from urban New York City (NYC) and rural Iriomote Island in Japan. With a common goal to stop plastic pollution, students from PS/MS 188 in Lower Manhattan (NYC) and students from Iriomote Island, one of the southernmost islands of Japan, share their culture, ideas, and actions. They build friendships, discover differences and similarities, and inspire the world to take action to stop plastic pollution. Equipped with pencils, paper, camcorders, and great ideas, our students documented their lunches. They surveyed the packaging by quantified and cataloging every plastic item served with their meal. Then they brainstormed, listed alternatives to single-use plastic packaging, and shared their suggestions and data with the School Food manager... and she listened! With their own data, suggestions, and personal stories, our students persuaded their School Food manager to eliminate 3 single-use plastic packaging items per lunch, amounting to a reduction of more than 30,000 plastic items for the remaining 20 days in the school year! Then they calculated how much less plastic would be used if all New York City schools did the same. Students learned that by collecting their own data and supporting their data with personal stories and good math, they could influence #plasticfree change in their own school! Description: Episode 5 of the YouTube series "Plastic Free Friendship" is a truly special one! Students from New York and from Komi Elementary School and Uehara Elementary School in Iriomote Island, Okinawa, chatted for the first time via Zoom. This episode is filled with the kids' excitement. During the presentation, they discussed the types of trash found on their local beaches and how they go about cleaning it up. One highlight was the "degradation board panel" samples—litter showing how beach plastic changes over time. But that’s not all! They also got excited talking about anime, their favorite foods, and what they eat for their school lunch. Even though they live in different countries, finding similarities brought them closer together. Organizing this event took a lot of preparation. With a 14-hour time difference between Japan and New York, scheduling was challenging. Teachers had to call all the students' parents or guardians to get permission to stay late for the zoom. The kids also worked hard to learn and practice each other’s languages! This episode shows how children can connect with distant friends and collaborate on common issues like plastic waste. Check out Cafeteria Culture’s free resources: www.cafeteriaculture.org www.plasticfreelunch.org </video> <video> 日本語版第５話： ドキドキ！初めてZoomでNYのみんなと話したよ！ Description: YouTubeシリーズ「Plastic Free Friendship」の第5話は、とっても特別な回！ニューヨークの子どもたちと、沖縄の西表島に住む古見小学校と上原小学校の子どもたちが、初めてZoomで対面しました！みんなの緊張とワクワクを見てくださいね〜。 Zoomではお互いの学校でのプラ削減活動を発表しあったり、「劣化パネル」というビーチクリーンで集めたプラスチックゴミの標本を比べあったり！これは、プラスチックがどんなふうに劣化して行ってマイクロプラスチックになっていくかを順番に並べたパネルです。 それだけじゃ終わらない！アニメの話や、食べ物の話、学校の給食についても盛り上がりました。異なる国に住んでいても、似ているところがたくさんあることに気づくと、もっと仲良くなれるね！ このイベントを実現するために、たくさんの準備が必要でした。日本とニューヨークでは14時間の時差があるため、スケジュールを合わせるのが大変！ さらに、ニューヨークでは、夜遅くまで子どもたちが学校に残るために、児童全員の保護者の方に夜7時半に迎えに来てもらう必要がありました。家庭の事情が複雑な子も多くて、先生や学校事務の方、そして校長先生までが保護者に電話して掛け合い、クラス31人中の20人が参加することができました。（本人はすごく参加したかったのに家庭の事情で参加できなかった子もたくさんいたんです。そんな子たちのために次の日学校でもう一度お寿司とポッキーを教室でみんなで食べました！） 日本の子たちは英語での発表も猛練習したよ！ニューヨークの子たちも「こんにちは」や「ありがとう」を学んで、連発（笑）。 海を越えた新しい友情の始まりを見逃さないでくださいね！ </video>

Cafeteria Culture (CafCu) works creatively with youth to achieve equitable zero waste, climate-smart school communities and a plastic free biosphere.

Our youth programs merge citizen science and civic action with media production and the arts. Students in our programs, overwhelmingly from lower income communities of color, provide an urgently needed voice to the climate movement by taking on leadership roles and bridging the interconnected issues of zero waste, environmental justice and the climate crisis. Our award winning documentary, MICROPLASTIC MADNESS (2019), screened in 37 countries, is sparking youth-led action for a plastic free future.

Founded in 2009 as Styrofoam out of Schools, CafCu catalyzed the complete elimination of polystyrene (styrofoam) trays from NYC schools and 10 other large US school districts, resulting in the elimination of 1/2 a BILLION styrofoam trays per year from landfills, incinerators, and student meals across the US. http://www.cafeteriaculture.org/
