I'm living in St. Phillips now and I'm the Drilling Project Manager for Statoil. Q1. What are your duties during a typical day? It varies. It's a pretty dynamic industry so no two days are alike but it's generally focused around the drilling operations and making sure they're done safely and compliantly. Q2. What aspects are involved in building a safety culture? The whole thought process of how we plan and the people we put in place, the risks that we assess before we go into a job -- the first thing we think about in the morning is safety and the last thing we think about at night is safety. It's the focus of all the offshore people as well that if the job can't be done safely we don't do it. Its not just saying it but safety really is the foundation of everything we do out there. Q3. How have you seen the NL oil and gas sector evolve? I've seen the industry kind of mature as I've been here. I've been back in NL now for 13 years so it was a welcome opportunity to get back because you know there's the non-work related part of Newfoundland and Labrador, which is as a native Newfoundlander is nice to get back to. But then on the industry side it's quite a challenging offshore environment so the work part of it is also attractive. The industry is kind of developed significantly over that timeframe now where it's looking more mature and it's got a bright future ahead. Q4. What does the offshore oil and gas sector mean to NL? As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians we do take pride in the work that's done here. There's a certain amount of ownership and pride to the work that's done offshore and I think as a community we embrace it and we want success. It means good things for the province and I'm certainly proud of the work that's being done here. Q5. What are your career goals for the future? My long-term goal is to have a sustained and challenging career in the oil industry in NL. So that kind of drives the way I think in terms of career progression.
