Note: I cannot return your restored items to you. <video> Garbage to Gold: Ball Peen Hammer Restoration Description: Not every restoration has to be massive – sometimes the small ones bring me the most joy because they’re often overlooked. This old 19 oz ball peen hammer was in an old toolbox full of tools that I purchased for $5. I’ve used it in many other restorations featured on this channel until finally it decided that it wanted to be the star of the show! My DIY electrolysis setup for just $20: https://youtu.be/lqf0iPlOgVY?si=96jTkZEs0DS-JuML Japanning recipe: • 4 tablespoons turpentine • 2 tablespoons boiled linseed oil • 4 mounded scoops of asphaltum (gilsonite) – the mounded scoops are because it’s a loose powder Japanning directions: 1. Thoroughly clean your part with acetone/degreaser and do not touch with bare hands 2. Thoroughly mix ingredients above, allow to sit for at least 24 hours for asphaltum to dissolve into solution and for any extra asphaltum to settle to the bottom so it doesn’t make your japanning grainy 3. Carefully dip a paintbrush in the japanning solution, ensuring you don’t go too deep in your container to disturb any of the sediment on the bottom 4. Paint a thin coat on the item. 5. Bake at 150F for 1 hour, allow part to fully cool. 6. Bake at 250F for 1 hour, allow part to fully cool. 7. Bake at 300F for 1 hour, allow part to fully cool. 8. Apply a second coat, repeat steps 4-7. 9. Apply as many additional coats as you feel are needed to produce a smooth, even finish by repeating steps 4-7. 10. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes, allow part to fully cool. 11. Bake at 400F for 30 minutes, allow part to fully cool. 12. If part still feels tacky, you can bake at 425F for 30 minutes. Japanning tips: • Less is more. Fresh japanning is runny and will drip as it bakes – use thin coats to prevent this! • Use an oven dedicated only for japanning. Do not use your home oven due to the fumes. • Bake in a well ventilated space. • Japanning solutions actually get better with time! They thicken up and are easier to apply slightly thicker coats. If the solution dries out, just add in more turpentine to loosen it up. Dishwasher detergent is an inexpensive alternative to special ultrasonic cleaner solutions and it's meant to work at warm temperatures - perfect for a heated ultrasonic cleaner. It's also best to not fill the tank directly with an acid, base, or rust remover solution - it will wear away at the liner of the ultrasonic tank. Instead, use 'indirect' cleaning methods where you submerge or suspend another container within the tank filled with water. Subscribe! _______Tips for restoring your own Boston Champion Pencil Sharpener_______ Please leave a comment if you’re restoring your own pencil sharpener like this and need any advice along the way if anything in my video was unclear! Follow along in the video for disassembly – it’s straight forward! Unfortunately, the shavings container was originally made to never be disassembled (thick metal tabs that are hard to get enough leverage on), so I found it best to keep together. If you have tips for disassembling, please let me know in the comments! Since everything except the handle knob is metal, start with soaking the metal parts in your favorite rust remover (I use Evapo-Rust but you can also use vinegar or electrolysis to name a couple other options). After about a day soaking in rust remover, you can wire wheel everything to clean metal. Do not wire wheel the cutting blades as you might dull them. Just brush them clean with a nylon bristle brush. They should still be sharp as long as the only thing they sharpened over the years was pencils! If they are dull you can soak them in vinegar for about a day to give them a bit of “bite” back. The amount of sanding and polishing of the metal parts is up to you, but general progression for me to get a mirror finish where I want to is 60 grit-100-150-220-500-1000-1200 and finishing with white or blue polish compound. For rust protection I recommend nickel plating all metal parts. There are many great tutorials out there for nickel plating safely at home. For the wood knob I sanded at 220 and 400 grit, stained it with a Varathane stain, and then sealed with clear polyurethane. The most difficult part of this restoration is the pencil gripper mechanism. Like the shavings case, it’s not meant to be disassembled. I’d recommend leaving it in one piece and just oiling it well, unless the mechanism is completely broken. For paint, I chose Rustoleum’s hammered paint in light blue – this is both close to the original color and texture and also and extremely durable paint with excellent adhesion for tools. You can choose to prime all your parts or just paint directly onto the parts. I recommend stripping the parts down to bare castings for maximum adhesion and durability, but you should at least sand painted surfaces with ~220 grit sandpaper if you don’t plan to strip it down. I use Rustoleum’s metal etching primer followed by one very heavy coat of the Hammered paint. The disassembly is fairly straightforward. As you remove every screw you can find it'll start to come apart pretty easily. Be very careful with the delicate motor internals. If you're lucky the coil windings will still be intact. For restoring the motor internals, I first tested the coils with a multimeter to make sure there was at least a continuous circuit. Fortunately there was. The only other alternative is to wind new coils, but the armature of this fan was manufactured cheaply and was never intended to be disassembled to put new coil windings into it. If you notice the coating wearing off on the wires in the coils you can spray them with a fresh coat of varnish or brush on liquid electrical tape.
