Its a beautiful sunny afternoon across northern Indiana and residents all across the state are beginning to venture outdoors to enjoy the pleasant spring weather after a long and brutal winter. None of them could have imagined that in just a few short hours they would be at the center of one of the worst tornado outbreaks in American history. On April 11th, 1965, a catastrophic tornado outbreak would devastate the midwestern states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, producing over 50 tornadoes and claiming the lives of 266 people, causing apocalyptic levels of destruction matched only by the 1925 Tri-state tornado and the 1974 and 2011 Super Outbreaks. One of these tornadoes would nearly hit me and devastate the town of Greenfield, Iowa, earning a high end EF4 rating. A mobile doppler radar team recorded winds as high as 309-318mph inside this tornado, making the Greenfield, Iowa tornado a contender for the strongest tornado ever recorded and likely the first tornado I've seen capable of doing EF5 damage. This video tells my story of chasing this historic storm and how it nearly cost me my life. Rising to the top of the Enhanced Fujita Scale, EF5s are the most powerful classification a tornado can possibly get and their destructive power is incredible. With estimated winds in excess of 200mph, EF5s are the most violent wind storms on planet Earth, and are capable of leveling everything in their path, tossing cars hundreds of yards, and carving deep scars into the ground. They are the kings of our skies and one of the most destructive forces on our planet. Since the implementation of the Enhanced Fujita Scale in 2007 there have been a total of 9 Tornadoes that have officially reached this terrifying metric. One of these tornadoes would go down in history as it left behind a 70mi path of destruction. This is the true story of 2022 Winterset Tornado. The tornado was on the ground for over an hour and a half and traveled for 70 miles, making it the longest tracked tornado of the March 5th outbreak and the longest tracked tornado to hit Iowa in nearly a decade. Winterset was also the deadliest tornado to strike Iowa since the Parkersburg EF5 that occurred on May 25, 2008, and remarkably was also the farthest north violent tornado ever to occur so early in the season.
