Description: Hens are not Pez dispensers! Even the most productive breeds lay in cycles with natural breaks. Hens require a combination of many RESOURCES in order to OVULATE (lay eggs) optimally, most notably: 👉🏻 YOUTH. Hens will be most productive their 1st two years. Production declines each year thereafter. She may lay her entire life, but it will never be at the same rate as her first two years. 👉🏻 BALANCED DIET. They are extremely sensitive to OMISSIONS in their diet. A century of poultry nutrition studies prove the need a SPECIFIC BALANCE of approx. 38 nutrients to optimize health & egg production/REPRODUCTION. Feeding additional healthy foods is NOT beneficial to hens given a nutritionally complete feed, it creates nutrient imbalance, deficiencies, and obesity. 👉🏻 LIGHT. 14-16 hours of light exposure per day are required to stimulate the pineal gland, which triggers the hormone flow responsible for the release of an ova (yolk) from her ovary to begin the egg-making process. Importantly, hens MUST have 8 hours of complete DARKNESS every day as a matter of animal welfare. 👉🏻LOW STRESS. This presents in many forms, including: overcrowding, new flock members or losses, changes of any kind, water deprivation, severe weather, high temperatures, excessive light exposure, predator activity, etc. * REPRODUCTION is a hen’s bodily function, not a breakfast gift to humans. they cannot be forced to lay eggs nor to lay beyond their capacity. Description: This is the same hen viewed a few months apart. Her comb, the fleshy thang above her eyes, was bright and full in summer, then shrank and turned pale in winter. WHY? 👇👇👇 👉🏻COMB (& wattle) size & color are indicators of health & fertility that signal to the opposite sex that the hen is a fertile partner and good choice to mate with help continue his bloodline. 👉🏻When a hen is not actively laying (ovulating), her oviduct recedes and her wattles shrink & lighten in color. 👉🏻It’s NORMAL for a hen’s comb to shrink annually when she is molting. Molting (replacing feathers) takes precedence over ovulation & reproduction in darker months of the year. 👉🏻 When a hen is SICK, resources are conserved, so she will stop laying and her comb will shrink and change color. 👉🏻When a hen is BROODY, (called by Mother Nature to hatch chicks) her comb will shrink as her oviduct recedes. Malnutrition & dehydration that occur during a broody spell will also contribute to a pale comb. After she hatches chicks or broodiness is otherwise interrupted, she returns to a normal diet and her comb color/size will also return along with egg production.
