Many of our talented students dive headfirst into a kaleidoscope of activities that colour their academic journey, as demonstrated by the experience of final year PhD student Éva Bényei. Eva is based at the Department of Biochemistry where she works in the field of microbiology. She was born and raised in Hungary where she completed her medical training. She originally planned to become an Infectious Disease specialist but realised her path was in science and the next step was to do a PhD. He came to visit the College for a weekend in the lower sixth form, to get a taste of university life, so it seemed a natural choice to apply here for his undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences. After his third year, he took a follow-on year studying Computer Science. At the time, Computer Science did not exist as an undergraduate degree. Ellie Vitanov applied to Churchill College during the Covid-19 pandemic, and lived in Bulgaria at the time, so in contrast had never been to Cambridge. She applied to Churchill College as she wanted to study Computer Science and liked its location. Brian and Ellie met to compare experiences and explore how Churchill College and computer science has changed over the years. One standout is Sir John Cockcroft, who received the Nobel Prize in #Physics in 1951 and went on to serve as the College’s first Master from 1960 -7. Cockcroft, alongside Ernest Walton, achieved groundbreaking work in nuclear physics by successfully splitting the atom. This monumental discovery not only advanced scientific understanding but also paved the way for developments in nuclear energy and medicine. Description: Exposing another curious hidden history in the design of the College, Prof. Mark Goldie explains how not everything went to plan when the original site was constructed. While most of the original site was constructed in line with the plans of the architects Richard Sheppard, Robson and Partners, there was at least one notable alteration. The original plans saw the chapel take a prominent position at the front of the College, on Storey’s Way. Following a sometimes acrimonious debate amongst the College fellowship about whether a 20th century College focused on science and technology should have a chapel or not, this was abandoned.
