In just the past two decades (2000–2019), the population has faced 185 extreme weather events. Khudi Bari is a modular structure that was developed during the lockdown of the pandemic in 2020 as a potential shelter for the marginalized landless population living in the sand beds of several river. The space frame structure is built with structural bamboo and steel joints to facilitate assembly and disassembly in a short period of time and can be moved to safer locations in times of crisis. Two levels of the modular house double the use of space and offers refuge during flooding. The construction materials are locally sourced in order to reduce the cost and carbon footprint. The project is envisioned as a time appropriate intervention in the vernacular practice of building. As such dialogues and engagement with the vulnerable communities are integral part of the process. F.A.C.E Bangladesh, is formed with the goal of providing home and humane living environment for people who are ultra-low-income, landless and or climate victims through community engagement, empowerment with knowledge and skill of building, research into climate positive material and construction methods appropriate to the uniqueness of the context. Geographical locations in focus are the dynamic coastal and riverine delta areas of Bangladesh including areas prone to flood and flash flooding, areas prone to cyclonic storms including unforeseen disasters such as earthquake and or manmade disaster that are not bounded by geographical location. With roads on two sides, the site creates an interesting opportunity to flip a typical suburban house condition. The consequences evolved an overall feeling of clarity and composure – a home that enhances the life of the growing family who resides within its walls. The house came up with an introverted form with a solid mass of concrete that stands still and bold from the outside. The vigorous play of light and volume is introduced only when one enters and walks through different spaces inside. On Monday afternoon, scenes of pandemonium swept through the streets as thousands of people descended on the Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (Parliament House). The hearts of Sufi family, however, remained tethered to the rustic simplicity of their ancestral home; this longing led them to acquire this piece of land in Lokkhipur, Gazipur. The design is meant to grow and change to be observed and celebrated by multiple generations of this family. The blueprint of the Bari harmonises with the eternal and timeless forces of the site, the trees planted around the home blocks act as shaded corridors and natural screens, meticulously chosen for their ability to merge with the landscape. The vaulted ceilings and minimal furniture inside the home contribute to the farmhouse aesthetic, adding a rustic charm. The concrete blocks themselves seem to shrink in comparison, humbly integrating with the natural surroundings. Like rural settlements, the trees scatter in a natural, random pattern.
