I'm here to serve my community (that's YOU!) so make sure you get those notifications! In our daily lives, we will experience a myriad of emotions. Not all of them are pleasant. I’m here to tell you that there are 4 emotions we need to really understand in order to grow. There is wisdom in our feelings and many of us have been taught that negative feelings need to be managed away. Anxiety, worry, FOMO. (Fear of missing out). These are all offshoots of fear. These emotions are trying to protect us. Fear (and anxiety) are an appropriate response to a lack of resources. Now the question to ask here is this: what is really worth defending? Honor is worth defending. Even your money is worth defending. But our anxiety is often felt when we feel our sense of self being threatened because we are comparing ourselves to other people. This is probably the number one problem with my clients. If you are feeling anxiety because you’re not thin enough, as successful as so-and-so or feel like you are missing out... that’s a signal that your values are misplaced. Shame and guilt are being lumped together for the purpose of making this simple but let me be clear : Shame and guilt are NOT the same. They are two distinct emotions but the core of it is from the same place. One of my favorite researchers and authors Brené Brown wisely showed the world that shame and guilt are not the same. Shame is the feeling that you are bad. Guilt is the feeling that you have done something bad. Shame and guilt evolved to help you repair lost connection. Have you ever intentionally or unintentionally hurt someone and then felt shame or guilt? This is the emotion that is most commonly prone to lead to a distracted state. A distracted state keeps you stuck so you avoid repairing those connections because it’s uncomfortable. Impatience, frustration, resentment— these are all anger. Anger is the signal of unfairness and of a boundary violation. There is wisdom in the anger that we feel. If we ignore these feelings, we will move boundaries to accommodate others when it is not appropriate to do so. This is when you lose yourself. Anger festers and becomes hatred, fury or rage when it is repressed. It is most commonly felt as resentment. It wants you to protect your valuable resources. I’m going to ask a tough question right now: when do I repress these emotions so that I appear more likable? Of Course we don’t want to live in a state of anger and rage. But a little fire to make us aware of when a boundary has been breached is where the wisdom lies. Shoving anger away and pretending it doesn’t exist is a sure fire way to have an implosion or explosion later on. Feeling bummed, hurt, experiencing grief or feeling lonely. That’s sadness. It’s the feeling that comes up when you lose something of value. Sadness evolved to help you cope with letting go. Loss is painful. Sadness is an invitation to receive. We recently watched WandaVision on Disney+ and there was a quote that stopped me in my tracks. Paul Bettany’s character says “What is grief, if not love persevering?” Anyone who has lost a loved one can relate to this. When we honor our feelings of sadness, we honor the experience of why we felt that sadness. It teaches us to hold on to what is dear and let love persevere, even though the person or experience is over. I know that many of these emotions and their combinations can be difficult to bear. It takes maturity and elegance to sort through these feelings without letting them fester and become a monster that you can’t quite get off your back. When couples go out to eat for example, they tend to stare at their phones or only talk about their kids or business. How can you avoid falling into this rut? Watch this video to find out! Over the years coaching women about their relationships, I have learned that most people don't feel like they really know themselves. These quizzes and assessments can be a useful tool! However, it can become your identity based on metrics that aren't taking your entire experience and natural gifts into account. The Color Code by Taylor Hartman is a beloved assessment that has helped millions of people over many years. I refer to it often! However, in the video, I discuss how I got it wrong and how it ended up contributing to a few limiting beliefs I have held for many years. Basing your identity on personality tests can be dangerous because personality tests are often based on limited and simplified models of personality, and can lead to a narrow and fixed view of yourself. This can lead to self-limiting beliefs and behaviors, which can inhibit personal growth and development. Additionally, relying too heavily on personality tests can distract you from other important aspects of your identity, such as your past trauma, values, experiences, and relationships. Last week Khloe Kardashian was trending in the news because one of her entourage had accidentally posted an unedited, unphotoshopped photo of her. The photo was a pretty standard “social media-esque” picture of her in her bikini. Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought much of it. But then the internet when crazy with reports that Khloe’s camp was desperately trying to get that untouched photo removed from the web. But as they say, the internet is forever. This did something really interesting though: Because of this “leak”, it exposed the fact the every single image taken of the Kardashian Clan is curated to a pathological degree. None of it is real. But why does this matter to me? Why was this bothering me so much? It got me thinking about role models my girls have. It got me thinking about that standard that is set for women all over the world. We are forced to compare our bodies to their perfectly crafted photos. It dawned on me that every photo the Kardashians put out there has to be screened, photoshopped and approved in order to maintain their perfect image. This is in no way a problem exclusive to Kim, Khloe or Kortney. This is a pervasive issue that has been around since the dawn of time. But these issues are ramping up at an alarming pace. This is so damaging to women’s self-esteem and body image. First off, to the women in my community: I want you to know that I see you. I also want you to know that I see what we - as women - are up against when it comes to body image. You and I can’t compare ourselves to photoshopped photos because it will leave us feeling terrible for good reason because it’s not obtainable! Not even to people with every possible advantage! I remember once hearing Super Model Cindy Crawford say that she wished that she looked like the Cindy Crawford after seeing her own photoshopped image in an ad campaign. To the men in my community I would say, please don’t be tricked by these polished pictures. The women in your life will never be a photoshopped women. And they shouldn’t be! You need to look at the women in your life for more than her body while at the same time keeping in mind that your wife’s body is a blessing to your life. And to my beautiful female friends: YOUR BODY IS A GIFT, no matter it’s shape or size. Again, I just want to tell the women in my community that I see you. I am one of you. I am not a Pinterest perfect person. I’m also not a photoshopped model of perfection. The best way I can think of to combat this battle is to acknowledge that these photos are not reality and celebrities should never be the people you set your standard against. In my coaching practice, I talk to women who have been robbed of their joy, self-worth and confidence because they have allowed themselves to become prey to the toxic mentality of The Kardashian Era. How can you protect yourself against this in your own life? WE NEED TO CALL IT OUT WHEN WE SEE IT! When you notice that first tinge of self-criticism when you see a perfectly manicured Instagram photo, a photoshopped magazine cover or one of the Kardashian-like staged photo ops, I want you to call it what it is: a lie. A story. A made up fairytale that is tailored to sell you more products you don’t need. The key is to only compare you to YOURSELF. Ask yourself, am I trying to be better today than I was yesterday? Am I taking care of myself the best I can? Am I working with what I have while striving to keep myself happy and healthy? Please see yourself for the force of good you are capable of being. Please see yourself for the beauty you really are. Please see yourself as the divine woman that was created to have joy and spread joy. And men: please don’t compare the women in your life to magazine women because you’ll never be happy and the women in your life with resent you for it. Again I just want to tell the women in my community, that I see you. That I am you. Comparison is the thief of joy-- so don’t let it rob you of your happiness. This is an idea that I wanted to do here in my community to show you that I'm putting my money where my mouth is! So over the past little while I have felt this analogy kind of growing like a little seed and I see little places where some of the things that I'm not quite addressing are starting to fester. For example, I have the “shame room” in the basement of my house that had a purpose and it's not for fulfilling this purpose because it's too overwhelming! It has become a catchall room and it keeps just accumulating random things. So it's become this monster that is too big for me to address and it causes me a lot of anxiety. As I have worked with clients, I realized that in our lives, we all have these big insurmountable problems that are too big to address! The advice that I give my clients is don't try to tackle the big “shame monster” in your basement. Start with something small! Start with something manageable! So in this video, I decided to do just that. I decided that instead of tackling my shame room (which I will do and I will probably document it for you all), I decided to do my little tiny linen closet-- which has also been the manifestation of all of these things I just keep avoiding. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to do this project and be able to once again prove to myself that I am capable of doing hard things. Even as a coach, I get overwhelmed and feel anxious about the little things that pile up. Both physically and emotionally. So make sure to stay tuned because there will be many more empowering projects to come! I am excited to one day show you my giant shame closet in my basement... but until then I'm gonna keep tackling those small manageable projects. As I do, I'll share them with you, so that together we can empower each other to take action on the things that we have control over!
