The campus also includes two historic townhouses renovated with state-of-the-art conservation technology and a unique terrace and garden. <video> The Start of Forever: Activating CW&T's "Time Since Launch" Clock Description: Designers Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy founded the Brooklyn-based design studio CW&T to investigate and improve people’s daily routines. Their practice develops new formats for the basic tools of work, life, and time. The “Time Since Launch” clock offers a thoughtful new way to mark, count, and consider time. This compact, single use, launch clock is activated by pulling a pin to mark a special event or an arbitrary happening—thousands of users have started “Time Since Launch” at weddings, births, house purchases, ordinary weekdays and more. Once the pin is pulled, the clock will run continuously for over 1 million days, counting forward the seconds, minutes, hours, and days. </video> <video> A Dictionary of Ornament: Highlights from Cooper Hewitt’s Print Collection Description: This illustrated talk from curator Rachel Jacobs explores the Decloux collection of ornament and architecture prints. Cooper Hewitt is home to the premier collection of ornament prints in the United States, consisting of over 13,000 European prints from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The lecture includes highlights from the collection by some of the most celebrated artists and designers of the period, as well a discovery of more hidden treasures by many forgotten or lesser-known artists and printmakers. Ornament prints were produced with the purpose of illustrating designs, patterns, or motifs of decorative ornament for use by craftsman and applicable to all aspects of applied arts from ceramic vases to furniture, from wall paneling to wrought-iron gates. This illustrated talk introduces the Decloux collection of ornament and architecture prints by exploring the language of ornament. How do these printmakers and publishers describe and title their works? What are the most common terms and motifs found in this broad genre and why? And how do these two-dimensional intaglio prints translate to real three-dimensional objects and interiors? SPEAKERS Rachel Jacobs is an independent curator specializing in French 17th-and 18th-century books and prints, based in Toronto, Canada. Since 2021, she is the Remote Senior Research Cataloguer for the Decloux collection of ornament and architecture prints in the Department of Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. She was previously Curator of Books and Manuscripts at Waddesdon Manor (Rothschild Collections) National Trust in England, where she continues to work remotely part-time. She has curated several exhibitions at Waddesdon Manor including most recently Alice’s Wonderlands: Life, Collections, and Legacy of Alice de Rothschild (1847-1922) (2022-23, co-curated). Jamie Kwan is the Assistant Curator of Drawings, Prints and Graphic Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. She received her B.A. from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in art history from Princeton, where she specialized in Renaissance and Baroque art, as well as Qing export and Jesuit art. Before her time at the Cooper Hewitt, Jamie served as the Associate Curator at the Wende Museum, an institution focused on the Cold War in Culver City, California and has held positions at the Morgan Library & Museum, J. Paul Getty Museum, Huntington Library, and Getty Research Institute. In addition, she has taught courses at the University of California, Riverside and The Cooper Union. </video> <video> Making Home with Data | Mona Chalabi and SITU in Conversation with Christina L. De León Description: The Making Home lecture series at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union presents four free public lectures featuring Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial exhibition participants paired with designers, artists, professionals, and Cooper Union faculty discussing the exhibition’s exploration of home and its relation to design, data, justice, history, and building. For the first program in the series, Making Home with Data, data journalist Mona Chalabi and representatives from the visual investigation practice SITU Research will discuss their installation “Patterns of Life” in the exhibition Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial. Their work examines the impact of domicide—the destruction of civilian housing during military conflict—highlighting its profound effects on communities and international efforts to raise awareness of this pressing issue. The program will be moderated by Christina L. De León, co-curator of Making Home— Smithsonian Design Triennial. Mona Chalabi is an award-winning writer and illustrator. Using words, color, and sound, Chalabi rehumanizes data to help us understand our world and the way we live in it. Her work has earned her a Pulitzer Prize, a fellowship at the British Science Association, an Emmy nomination, and recognition from the Royal Statistical Society. In recent years, her art has been exhibited at the Tate, the Brooklyn Museum, the Design Museum, and the House of Illustration. She studied international relations in Paris and Arabic in Jordan. Chalabi works beside windows, sometimes in her hometown, London but usually in Brooklyn where she is writing a book about the ways we talk about money. It has been optioned by A24 as a documentary series. She is also the executive producer and creative director of an upcoming animated TV show with Ramy Youssef, A24, and Amazon Studios. Her writing and illustrations have been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Guardian where she is currently the data editor. Her video, audio, and production work has been featured on Netflix, NPR, the BBC, and National Geographic. Gauri Bahuguna is a computational designer and Deputy Director at SITU Research. In her current role, Gauri makes complex human rights cases accessible to wider audiences by wrangling large and diverse datasets into visually compelling formats like interactive web platforms, large-scale drawings, and videos. Projects she has led include an investigation on human rights violations against protesters in Sudan, and evidentiary presentations of ISIL’s crimes against humanity in Iraq. Additionally, Gauri has previously taught at the Cooper Union School of Art, and given lectures at Carnegie Mellon, NYU, and The Pratt Institute. Martina Duque González is an Architectural Designer from Mexico City, based in New York City. Her work and research focus on the intersection between Architecture, Performance, and Human Rights Research. She has collaborated on multiple occasions with SITU/Research, one of the leading firms in the field of Visual Investigations, where she has worked as a Researcher, Modelmaker, and Designer for an investigative video piece and for a museum exhibition. She is also a studio assistant for the artist Tania Bruguera, whose multi-media work focuses on the relationship of performance and politics. In Theater, Martina has worked as a Set and Projection Designer both Off-Broadway and at NYU. She graduated from The Cooper Union with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree and a Minor in “History and Society,” with a focus on Performance Studies. Her interdisciplinary interests have resulted in work in various fields. Christina L. De León is Associate Curator of Latino Design and the Acting Deputy Director of Curatorial at Cooper Hewitt. Her research focuses on the design and decorative arts of the Americas. Over recent decades, the seasonal agricultural industry and other factors have attracted a small but growing group of Spanish speakers from Latin American countries and the southern United States to the area. Angela Barrera, a Spanish teacher at the East Jordan Middle/High School initiated a student-led project, which focused on cultivating connections through culinary and linguistic exchanges. In Vues/Views, her new double-sided work on view in Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial, 19th-century French panoramic wallpapers become a prism through which threads of power, privilege, race, and class are performed, both within the papers themselves and in the places they appear today. For this conversation, Siegel speaks with Professor Jasmine Nichole Cobb, a leading scholar of African American cultural production and visual representation whose published writings trace the emergence of Black freedom as both an idea and as an image in popular culture. Together, Siegel and Cobb will consider the visual and social signification of panoramic wallpapers. SPEAKERS Chief Brad KillsCrow is a member of the Lenape and Lakota Tribes. He was raised in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and attended Bacone College on a basketball scholarship. He joined the US Navy in 1996 and served in the Persian Gulf and then worked in law enforcement from 2002 until 2011 which included the Kaw Tribal Police and the Ponca City Police Departments. Chief KillsCrow is a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center – BIA Police Academy. For the past seven years, he has been employed by the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma as Director of their Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) program. As the governing body of the Delaware Tribe, it is the duty of the Chief to provide leadership in maintaining tribal culture and values, providing services to tribal members, and ensuring a viable future through economic development. Maria Nicanor is an architecture and design curator and historian. She is passionate about public access to culture and rethinking the traditional roles of museums by experimenting with new storytelling formats that connect cultural institutions with civic life. Before joining Cooper Hewitt as its director, Nicanor had been the executive director of Rice Design Alliance at the Rice University School of Architecture , director of the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid, and a curator at the Design, Architecture, and Digital Department of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Before that, Nicanor had spent most of her career as a curator working on architecture projects and other initiatives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Kevin Young is the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. As the nation’s largest museum dedicated to telling the African American story, NMAAHC welcomes millions of visitors annually and engages a national audience through world-class online programming and digital access to its collections, including the recent launch of the Searchable Museum. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Young previously served as the director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. A professor for two decades, he began his career in museums and archives while serving as curator and Candler Professor at Emory University from 2005 to 2016. Young is the author of sixteen books of poetry and prose, most recently Stones, shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize; Blue Laws: Selected & Uncollected Poems 1995-2015, longlisted for the National Book Award; and Emile and The Field, named one of the best children’s books of 2022 by the New York Times. His nonfiction book Bunk was also longlisted for the National Book Award, a finalist for the National Book Critics Award for criticism, and named on many “best of” lists for 2017. Young is the editor of eleven other volumes, most recently the acclaimed anthology African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle & Song. Mabel O. Wilson (Moderator) is a professor of Architecture and chair of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University. With her practice Studio&, she was a member of the design team for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia. Exhibitions of her work have been at the Venice Architecture Biennale, SFMoMA, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her books include Negro Building: Black Americans in the World of Fairs and Museums, and co-edited the volume Race and Modern Architecture.
