John Lewis Way South Nashville, TN 37203 <video> Songwriter Round: Luke Combs and Friends • 2024 Description: Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association award–winning artist Luke Combs keeps a close circle of songwriting collaborators, many of whom were unproven talents when they first crossed paths in Nashville. During this program, Combs is joined by four of those songwriters — Ray Fulcher, James McNair, Drew Parker, and Rob Williford — to share the stories behind and perform some of the songs they have written together. This program, recorded on July 11, 2024, was offered in support of the exhibition "Luke Combs: The Man I Am." During this program, Combs treats fans to acoustic renditions of his hits “Beautiful Crazy” and “When It Rains It Pours.” He also performs an unreleased song, “Pushin’ Up Daisies,” and his hit cover of the Tracy Chapman song “Fast Car.” Fulcher, who has written more than two dozen of Combs’s songs, including six country radio #1s, performs two of those chart-toppers (“Does to Me,” “Even Though I’m Leaving”) and an unreleased single written with Combs, “Halfway Mark.” McNair shares stories about and performs several Combs staples, including “Beer Can,” “Lovin’ on You,” and “Going, Going, Gone,” while Parker plays “Lonely One” and “Forever After All” before showcasing his current single, “Love the Leavin’,” which Combs encouraged him to record. Williford, one of Combs’s earliest collaborator and a former member of Combs’s band, showcases “One Number Away,” “Doin’ This,” and “Hush Puppies,” an unreleased song written with Combs. Originally from Harlem, Georgia, Fulcher released his first album with Black River Entertainment, “Spray Painted Line,” in 2022 and has also written songs recorded by Tenille Arts, Elvie Shane, Zac Brown Band, and others. In addition to Combs, McNair has written songs recorded by Kane Brown, Florida Georgia Line, Scotty McCreery, and others. With Emily Weisband, he and Combs wrote “Dance Like No One’s Watching,” which Gabby Barrett recorded for her latest album, “Chapter & Verse.” A Stewart, Georgia, native, Parker released his first album with Warner Music Nashville, “Camouflage Cowboy,” in July and was one of Combs’s opening acts for his Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour. Williford, originally from North Carolina like Combs, released his first album, “Wildcard,” in 2023. For the second year in a row, they were named Duo/Group of the Year by the Americana Music Association. They received two 2023 Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. The War And Treaty's appearances at award shows included impassioned performances at the ACM Awards; the Americana Music Awards; and the CMA Awards, where the duo performed their song "That's How Love Is Made." The song is featured on their major-label debut album, "Lover's Game." The Dave Cobb-produced collection showcases the full spectrum of the Trotters' vocal powers, soulful songwriting skills, and varied stylistic approach. In this program, recorded on August 7, 2024, and moderated by the Museum’s Angela Stefano Zimmer, Williams discusses her journey from promoting concerts while attending the University of Missouri–Columbia to her current position as president of Nashville music and business strategy for Live Nation Entertainment. After working for multiple booking agencies and concert promotion companies, Williams joined Gaylord Entertainment in 1999. She managed and produced concerts and other events at Gaylord venues until 2007, then—following a brief stint at the Country Music Association—became general manager of the Ryman Auditorium in 2008. Williams was named the Opry Entertainment Group’s senior vice president of programming and artist relations, as well as the first woman general manager of the Grand Ole Opry, in 2017. She took her current role at Live Nation in 2019, the same year she began managing the band Old Crow Medicine Show in partnership with Red Light Management. Williams is an Academy of Country Music award winner (including the 2015 Don Romeo Talent Buyer of the Year and 2010 Promoter of the Year awards), received the T. J. Martell Foundation’s Frances Preston Outstanding Music Industry Award in 2019, and was named one of ten trendsetters on the 2023 “Nashville Business Journal” Power 100 list, among other honors. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Country Music Association, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Nashville Downtown Partnership, Nashville Public Radio, and other boards. Louise Scruggs (1927–2006) was married to Country Music Hall of Fame member and banjo great Earl Scruggs. In the mid-1950s, she began booking and managing Flatt & Scruggs and their band, the Foggy Mountain Boys. The first woman in country music to assume these roles, she astutely guided her husband’s career for half a century. The Louise Scruggs Memorial Forum was first presented in 2007; past honorees include Kay Clary, Lorianne Crook, Bebe Evans, Bonnie Garner, Dixie Hall, Cindy Mabe, Mary Martin, Bev Paul, Nancy Shapiro, Denise Stiff, Liz Thiels, Traci Thomas, Sarah Trahern, Marcie Allen Van Mol, Jo Walker-Meador, and Kay West. The pioneering R&B activity played a significant role in building Nashville’s worldwide reputation as “Music City” in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, and the influence is still felt today. This program, recorded on October 12, 2024, was offered in support of the exhibition “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited” and in partnership with Lovenoise and the National Museum of African American Music, with support from WNXP. Moderated by music journalist and “Making Noise” podcast host Jewly Hight, Lovenoise founder Eric Holt and musicians Frank Howard, Regina McCrary, Joey Richey, and Bryant Taylorr discuss their experiences developing and performing in Nashville and talk about the communities that encouraged them. This discussion was recorded on November 11, 2024, and celebrated the opening of the Haley Gallery exhibition “Heritage: Southern Vernacular,” which features quilts made by women in the Gee’s Bend community, as well as sculptures and two-dimensional works from Black vernacular artists associated with the state of Alabama. The exhibit’s guest curator, Paul Barrett, moderates this in-depth conversation. Topics range from each panelist’s individual artistic approach to collaborating with fashion designer Greg Lauren and witnessing Questlove accept an Oscar in a custom Gee’s Bend jacket. An audience Q&A includes discussion around ancestry in the community and the connection quilting affords to both the past and the future. Barrett and the panelists also discuss Gee’s Bend’s connection to “From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music,” a box set of recordings and an online experience from the Museum.
