In conjunction with our special exhibition, The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection, this month’s talk will feature The Dalí’s Senior Curator Dr. William Jeffett as he explores David Raymond’s collection of surreal photography. In celebration of the centennial of the founding of Surrealism in 1924, this exhibition will feature 100+ works created by more than 50 artists, highlighting the movement’s original aims in the medium of photography and its far-reaching influence. Notable artists include Eileen Agar, Eugène Atget, Joseph Bartuska, Hans Bellmer, Brassaï, Manuel Alvarez-Bravo, Robert Capa, Georges Hugnet, Clarence John Laughlin, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Lucia Moholy, Osamu Shiihara, Man Ray and Wols. The talk will present Surrealists, broadly conceived, as multi-faceted, complex and global phenomena that often complement the aesthetics and ambitions of other avant-gardes around the globe. Dr. William Jeffett, Curator of Special Exhibitions Dr. William Jeffett received his Doctorate from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He also holds degrees from Oxford University, Yale University and University of Texas. Before joining The Dalí Museum, Dr. Jeffett was Curator at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at University of East Anglia (UK). At The Dalí, he is responsible for the direction, curation, organization and co-ordination of exhibition programs; writing and editing of exhibition catalogs and other interpretative material, including the interpretation of works by Dali; and research on the permanent collection. Dr. Jeffett contributes to the expansion of the Museum’s collection through seeking and recommending acquisitions. He is an active researcher and writer for The Dalí and other museums, research institutes and universities. He has published numerous exhibition catalogs and articles devoted to Salvador Dalí, other related artists and contemporary art. Dr. Jeffett has curated many shows for the Museum and other influential institutions, including the Fundacio Joan Miro (Barcelona), Fundacio “La Caixa” (Madrid) and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid). Tom Winchester’s presentation on Surrealism in photography will include contemporary and historical images. Because of photography’s unique relation to realism, its relation to Surrealism is also unique. Whether it’s Dalí and Buñuel collaborating on a film, Uelsmann creating magic in the darkroom or Spike Jonze directing a music video, photographic processes have been used to make real situations that seem like dreams. </video> <video> Coffee with a Curator: Dalí’s Jewelry Creations Description: Coffee with a Curator: Peter Tush November 6, 2024 Join us for this month’s installment of our Coffee with a Curator series, where Museum staff or invited guests speak on a range of Salvador Dalí-inspired topics. In conjunction with the recent installation of The Dalí Museum’s jewels, this month’s talk will feature the Museum’s Curator and Senior Interpreter, Peter Tush, as he explores the history of Dalí’s jewelry creations, his inspirations and takes a closer look at several of the pieces including The Eye of Time brooch and The Royal Heart. Peter Tush, Curator and Senior Interpreter Peter Tush is the Curator and Senior Interpreter of The Dalí Museum. Tush has his Undergraduate Degree in Art History from New College in Sarasota and his Masters in Art History from the University of South Florida. Part of The Dalí staff for over two decades, he is a key interpreter of the Dalí collection and special exhibitions. He curates exhibitions, scripts the audio guides and gallery labels, and trains The Dalí docents. </video> <video> Poetry at The Dalí Description: Poetry at The Dalí November 14, 2024 Poetry at The Dalí is an ongoing series hosted by former poet laureate of St. Petersburg, Helen Pruitt Wallace, featuring select poets on the second Thursday of each month. Helen Pruitt Wallace has published individual poems in several journals and anthologies. Individual books include Shimming the Glass House, and a chapbook, Pink Streets. A former Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg, she is the curator of The Dalí Poetry series. Asa Drake is a Filipina/white poet in Central Florida. She is the author of Beauty Talk, winner of the 2024 Noemi Press Book Award, forthcoming from Noemi Press in Spring 2026. Her chapbook, One Way to Listen (Gold Line Press), is the winner of a 2023 Florida Book Award. A National Poetry Series finalist, she is the recipient of fellowships and awards from the 92Y Discovery Poetry Contest, Sundress Publications, Tin House and Idyllwild Arts. Her poems can be found on The Slowdown Podcast, The American Poetry Review, and Poetry Daily. Rick Campbell is a poet and essayist living on Alligator Point, Florida. His most recent book of poetry is Fish Streets Before Dawn (Press 53). A collection of essays, Sometimes the Light (Main Street Rag Press) was published in 2022. Other Poetry collections include Provenance; Gunshot, Peacock, Dog; The History of Steel; Dixmont; Setting the World in Order; The Traveler’s Companion, and A Day’s Work. Through guided discussions centered on carefully chosen artworks, VTS encourages participants to develop observational skills, think critically, and articulate their ideas. Initially designed as a tool for engaging museum visitors, VTS has found remarkable applications in fields as diverse as education, medicine, and business. Discover how VTS is being used in classrooms to foster empathy and collaboration, in medical schools to enhance diagnostic skills, and in corporate boardrooms to boost creative problem-solving and team dynamics. This engaging presentation will demonstrate how learning to look closely at art can unlock valuable skills for any setting. Dr. Kimberly Macuare, Director of Education and Co-Director of Innovation Labs at The Dalí, is an experienced educator, curriculum designer and facilitator. For over 20 years, she has designed world-class learning experiences—college courses, workshops, leadership retreats, team building sessions, and keynote presentations—and, most recently, has been responsible for the award-winning curriculum of creativity and innovation workshops and offerings at The Innovation Labs at The Dalí. In her role at The Dalí, she has helped a wide range of organizations, from local nonprofits CASA and Community Foundation of Tampa Bay to educational institutions University of South Florida and Florida Poly to Fortune 100 companies Bank of America and IBM, build their innovation capacities by developing creativity-focused mindsets and learning key creative problem-solving skills. In addition to supporting external clients, she also takes an active role in innovative projects and initiatives across The Dalí Museum organization, including creating new programs for museum audiences and leading all-staff creative thinking and problem-solving projects. She has extensive experience in arts-based creativity training and is a certified trainer of leading research-based creativity and innovation tools FourSight Mindset and Toolset as well as a certified facilitator of LEGO® Serious Play®. She also teaches a creativity course in the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. Hosted by former poet laureate of St. Petersburg, Helen Pruitt Wallace and in partnership with Curtis Davis and Dennis Amadeus of Tampa’s GrowHouse poetry collective. The signup list will be posted on the door of the Museum’s Will Raymund Theater on Thu, Dec 12 at 5:30pm. 20 spots will be available for poets in the order in which they sign up, with 3 stand-by names if time allows. Each poet will have three minutes at the mic. Whether you want to listen, read or perform a poem, all are welcome. Adult audience is recommended. In 2018, Curtis was ranked the eight poet in the world after becoming a finalist in the Individual World Poetry Slam held in San Diego, CA. He is the Creative Director of 501c3 Non-Profit Heard ‘Em Say Youth Arts Collective and is the Co-Founder of GrowHouse with Dennis Amadeus. GrowHouse is an artist collective dedicated to growing community, growing culture and growing creatives through poetry and hip-hop. This lecture will uncover the transformative power of the Surrealist Manifesto and its enduring legacy, highlighting how it challenged the boundaries of reason and redefined the relationship between art, politics and imagination. In 1924, André Breton ignited an aesthetic revolution with the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to explore the depths of the unconscious and liberate its creative potential. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of this ground-breaking document, we will take a closer look at what this Manifesto was about and the history of the Surrealist movement and its legacy. We will also celebrate a century of the Manifesto and its profound influence on art, literature and culture. Alex Lenoble Alex Lenoble is Assistant Professor of French in the department of World Languages at the University of South Florida (USF), which he joined in 2019 after completing his Ph.D. at Cornell University. At USF, he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Francophone literature and culture, French cinema, and literary theory. A former Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg, she is the curator of The Dalí Poetry series. Caridad Moro-Gronlier was appointed the second Poet Laureate in County history by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in April 2024. Caridad is the author of Tortillera, the winner of the TRP Southern Poetry Breakthrough Prize published by Texas Review Press (2021), Visionware (Finishing Line Press, 2009) and a forthcoming book of poetry, As to Your Comment. She is also the editor of Grabbed: Poets and Writers Respond to Sexual Assault, Empowerment and Healing (Beacon Press, 2020). Caridad serves as the Associate Editor for SWWIM Every Day, an online daily poetry journal for women identifying poets and as The Betsy’s Writer’s Room Poetry-Curator-At- Large. In 2023, she was Series Editor of From the Writer’s Room at The Betsy for a monthly column for The New Tropic (2023). In addition, her work has been featured in The Best American Poetry Blog, Verse Daily, NPR, The Hive, Split This Rock, Essential Queer Voices of U.S. Poetry and others. Her essays appear in The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, The Sun, New Letters, and O, the Oprah Magazine, and The Best American Essays and the Pushcart Prize anthology. She regularly speaks to audiences about prosopagnosia (face blindness), most recently to employees at NASA. You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know, her memoir, was Editor’s Choice at the New York Times. She’s written three previous books on craft, Page After Page and Chapter After Chapter and The Practice of Creative Writing. She’s also written a children’s book, Spike and Cubby’s Ice Cream Island Adventure, and a collection of linked short stories titled Georgia Under Water. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, is home to the world’s most diverse collection of living epiphytes, or air plants. Selby Gardens helps visitors connect to nature through a series of dynamic art and horticulture exhibitions at its two bayfront campuses. Discover the collaborative process that enables Selby Gardens’ interdisciplinary team to reimagine art and nature through the surprising and unconventional use of plants. David Berry, Vice President for Visitor Engagement and Chief Museum Curator at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens David Berry did his doctoral research at the University of Oxford with a focus on the history of museums, gardens, and libraries. David spent ten years at The Ringling in Sarasota, serving ultimately in the role of Associate Director, before joining Selby Gardens in 2021 as Vice President for Visitor Engagement and Chief Museum Curator.
