A nice gentle walk to Sandwood Bay Beach, located in the Scottish Highlands, it is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, remoteness, and unspoiled landscape. Sandwood Bay is famous for its pristine sandy beach, stretching for about 1.5 miles and flanked by high sand dunes and dramatic cliffs. The beach is known for its tranquillity and sense of isolation, as it is only accessible on foot. This remoteness enhances the experience for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature. The beach has no facilities, shops, or services, so visitors are advised to come prepared with all necessary supplies, including food, water, and appropriate clothing. A beautiful walk! Join me on this series every Sunday as I set out to walk and film every single step of this stunning trail, sharing the entire journey with you from start to finish. Part 2: Broadway to Stanway House– 5.98 miles (9.63 km) Our journey continues from the town of Broadway, the Cotswold Way climbs up onto the escarpment, following broad tracks to the Iron Age hill fort of Shenberrow Camp. The Trail then descends into the unspoilt Cotswold village of Stanton. After the village, the walking becomes easy across the level parkland of the Stanway Estate, with its Jacobean manor and the highest gravity fed fountain in Europe. This section finishes at the Stanway House. This leg of the journey includes 813 feet (248 metres) of ascent and 715 feet (218 metres) of descent, a lovely balance of gentle climbs and easy terrain. The trail then meanders across the rolling grasslands of Barrow Wake, offering sweeping vistas, before leading us into a stretch of woodland. Hanley Park was officially opened in 1897 and is a fine example of a late Victorian municipal park. This picturesque flight of locks lies between the towns of Macclesfield and Congleton and is surrounded by the scenic countryside of the Cheshire Plain, with the Peak District National Park to the east. The Macclesfield Canal, including the Bosley Locks, was constructed between 1826 and 1831 during the height of the Industrial Revolution. It was designed by Thomas Telford, one of the greatest civil engineers of the era, in collaboration with William Crosley. The canal was built to serve as a transportation route for goods such as coal, stone, and textiles, linking industrial towns in Cheshire with the wider canal network. The Bosley Locks themselves are an engineering marvel, forming a flight of 12 locks that enable boats to ascend or descend a total of 118 feet (36 meters) over a relatively short distance. Loch Ness is famously associated with the legendary Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as "Nessie," which has intrigued and attracted tourists since the 1930s. Loch Ness is the second-largest Scottish loch by surface area but the largest by volume due to its great depth (up to 755 feet). Fort Augustus is a small village situated at the southern end of Loch Ness, where the Caledonian Canal meets the loch. The Caledonian Canal stretches from Corpach near Fort William in the southwest to Inverness in the northeast, connecting several lochs, including Loch Ness. It was engineered by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822. It was designed to provide a navigable route through the Great Glen, avoiding the dangerous waters around the west coast of Scotland. Our first stop is the ancient Neolithic long barrow of Belas Knap, a fascinating reminder of the area's rich history. From there, we’ll follow a steep descent through Breakheart Plantation, passing the picturesque Postlip Hall nestled in the trees. The trail then challenges us with another climb, leading us to the Golf Club House at Cleeve Hill, where we’ll be rewarded with stunning views from the highest point in the Cotswolds. This section includes 1,082 feet (330 metres) of ascent and 476 feet (145 metres) of descent, offering a mix of history, woodland, and panoramic scenery. The effort is well worth it, as we’ll be greeted with magnificent views across the Vale of Evesham toward the distant Malvern Hills. As we continue, the trail takes us past the Iron Age hill fort of Beckbury Camp before we descend into Hailes, where we’ll find a charming little church and the atmospheric ruins of Hailes Abbey. From there, we’ll wander through peaceful farmland and finish just before before arriving in the historic Cotswold town of Winchcombe, a perfect place to finish this part of the journey. This leg of the journey includes 564 feet (172 metres) of ascent and 679 feet (207 metres) of descent, offering a mix of rewarding climbs and tranquil countryside. The trail then takes us on a steady climb to Wistley Plantation before leading over open farmland and descending toward Seven Springs, a site some believe to be the true source of the River Thames. From here, the path climbs once more onto Charlton Kings Common, where we’ll be treated to breathtaking views over Cheltenham and the Severn Vale. Finally, we’ll follow the escarpment to Leckhampton Hill, home to the striking rock formation known as the Devil’s Chimney. This section offers 902 feet (275 metres) of ascent and 344 feet (105 metres) of descent, blending woodland serenity with panoramic vistas. As we continue south, we’ll pass through the peaceful Bill Smylie’s butterfly reserve, where the quiet hum of nature surrounds us. From there, the trail leads us along tranquil lanes before descending through Dowdeswell Wood, ending at the picturesque Dowdeswell Reservoir, a haven for wildlife and one of the few remaining homes for the native white-clawed crayfish. This section is gentler, with 325 feet (99 metres) of ascent and 604 feet (249 metres) of descent, making it a serene and scenic stretch of the journey. As we continue, we’ll find ourselves arriving in the charming town of Painswick, which marks the mid-point of the Cotswold Way, with its charming streets and historical character. This section has 590 feet (180 metres) of ascent and 1066 feet (325 metres) of descent, making it a delightful walk with plenty of history and natural beauty to take in along the way.
