Following welcome from DGA Director of Commercial Contracts Winona Wacker, National Vice President Laura Belsey introduced a screening of the nominated commercials. Then nominees Martin de Thurah (Fair Exchange and Legends Never Die [Levi’s 501 Jeans]); Seb Edwards (Rumble [Battle of the Baddest]), Kim Gehrig (Run This Town [Apple Music], The Travelers [Expedia]) and Craig Gillespie (Waiting Room [Apple iPhone]) spoke about the making of their ads in a conversation moderated by Director Kim O. Nguyen. The event was followed by a reception where the nominees mingled with DGA members and guests. Nominee Andreas Nilsson (R.I.P. During the conversation the panelists revealed how they all combined practical effects and virtual effects in their respective projects to create more authentic worlds. All agreed that one of the greatest challenges was how time consuming it can be to prep and build their voluminous sets but are excited by the promise of ever-changing technology improving virtual production. With Latino representation in media still lacking, the conversation moderated by Director Edward Ornelas (Promised Land) emphasized the importance of advocacy and creating opportunities for emerging voices. During the conversation, Mendoza discussed how she thinks of her directorial voice and not categorizing herself as a Latino woman Director but as a comedy Director who happens to be Latin. Fuentes recalled how watching telenovelas when she was younger set her on her directorial path and how more serious shows influenced her darker narratives in Ray Donovan and The Deuce. Negret revealed how his Latino heritage led to extra pressure to “do the job right” and implementing Latino representation while working on the series, The Lincoln Lawyer. See more from this event below: https://dga.org/Events/2023/November2023/LatinoSummit2023.aspx </video> <video> DGA Latino Summit 2023 | Director's Spotlight: Guillermo del Toro and Fede Alvarez Description: Rounding out an eventful day of learning and sharing, acclaimed Directors Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack!, Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe, The Girl in the Spider’s Web) had an intimate one-on-one conversation where the two visionaries discussed their illustrious careers and offered wisdom on navigating Hollywood as a Latino creative. Del Toro spoke of the unseen importance success has on continuing to open the door for more representation to make way and his admiration for Alvarez’s “disobedience” in the way he utilizes subversion in his filmmaking. Alvarez shared insights into his upbringing under a repressive dictatorship in Uruguay that limited his early access to cinema, as well as his work with colleague Ridley Scott on the production of the upcoming feature, Alien: Romulus. Both Directors discussed the drought of filmmakers originating from Uruguay and how Alvarez has attempted to find more natives from his home country to work with him on his features.
