While the allure of the US is undeniable, I gravitated towards the UK for several reasons. Firstly, the UK offers a more adventurous exploration of medical specialties. Unlike the US, which is more restrictive, the UK allowed me to experiment in diverse fields, like Colorectal surgery and Emergency Medicine, akin to "dating before marrying." The pay structure also drew me to the UK. While salaries might not seem gigantic, when you consider hourly rates and the bonus 'locum' shifts, they are quite competitive. Not to mention, the conditions for residents in the US can be grueling with the hours they put in, often leading to lesser pay for more work. Additionally, the journey for an international medical graduate is simpler in the UK. The USMLE felt like a mammoth challenge, while the UK’s PLAB was more approachable. However, PLAB will soon be replaced by the UKMLA, an exam designed for both UK final year students and international graduates. I'm even working on a project to help students navigate this transition, so keep an eye out for that! Then there's the unparalleled flexibility the UK offers. One can seamlessly transition between specialties, making the experience feel like a “medical playground”. And let's not forget about the location benefits! The UK, especially London, is a travel lover's dream. Proximity to Europe, affordable flights, breathtaking landscapes, historical sites, and a vibrant culture make it ideal. The connectivity, with London boasting six major airports, is just the cherry on top. In conclusion, my decision to move to the UK was personal and tailored to my desires and goals. It's not about advocating for one over the other, but sharing my journey and reasons. I'm still exploring, and who knows, the US might be on the cards in the future. Subscriber Count:88k </video> <video> Why I Left Hospital Medicine to Become a GP | 7 Reasons to Choose GP Description: In August this year, I gave up my plans of become a hospitalist and joined training/residency in General Practice (aka Family Medicine) in Cambrigde. Here are the 7 reasons behind my decision. 1. The Great Specialty Dilemma So, here's the deal. After med school, a lot of folks seem to have their whole career mapped out, right? Not me. I was into pretty much everything and couldn't decide. Total confusion city. This indecision actually led me to choose the UK over the US for my further training. I even made a list of all the specialties I was considering. There was Emergency Medicine, Surgery, General Medicine (like Cardiology and Gastroenterology), and Urology. Quite the mix, huh? My first stop was Emergency Medicine. But man, what a mess. The system was falling apart, and the shift work? Absolutely hated it. Next up, surgery. I got offers in Urology, Paediatric Neurosurgery, and later Colorectal surgery. But guess what? Didn't enjoy that either. Eventually, I had this big realization. Hospital specialty training? Not worth it. It's a long, winding road with constant moving around, and consultant jobs aren't just sitting around waiting for you. But then, there's General Practice (GP). Only three years of training and the job prospects? Chef's kiss. 2. Jack of All Trades in General Practice The cool thing about being a GP? No need to stick to one specialty. Back in India, after your MBBS, you're pretty much thrown into the deep end, handling basic stuff like coughs and colds. The UK is different. Pharmacists handle the simple cases, and I get the complex stuff like asthma flare-ups, mental health issues, and even treating sex offenders. It's intense but fascinating. The best part? I can treat babies and then their entire families. It's all about being the first point of contact before referring patients to specialists. So, I get to see all sorts of cases. 3. Work Hours – It's All About That Routine Routine is my jam. And being a GP? It's a 9-5 gig with weekends off. Plus, I get Wednesdays off for teaching and a half-day on Tuesdays. It's technically a 3.5-day work week, but with extra portfolio work and studying, it's not exactly a walk in the park. 4. Flexibility is Key As a GP, the world is your oyster. You can branch out into sports medicine, occupational health, even endoscopies. Once you're signed off by a consultant, you're good to go solo. 5. Work Wherever You Want GPs are in demand, pretty much everywhere. I could work anywhere in the world, though it's a bit tricky in India. But hey, there's always the MRCP route. 6. Show Me the Money 💸 Let's talk cash. Most doctors do alright, but GPs? They're on another level. Basic salary starts at £90k, and it only goes up from there. Partners make between £150k and £200k, and locums rake in £120k to £160k. This means more travel and time off. A friend of a friend even has a unique GP practice. 7. The Joy of Flow State Now, I'm all about that flow state, a term I proudly coined as 'flowtime'. What's that, you ask? It's when you're so immersed in what you're doing that everything else fades away. Hospitals are jam-packed with distractions, but in GP? I get my own office, relax, and focus on seeing patients. To wrap it all up, being a GP isn't all rainbows and butterflies. Ultradian rhythms are any rhythms that last from a few minutes to many hours through the day but not more than 24 hours. There are many other rhythms in our body - Circadian rhythms - that lasts for 24 hours, so like your sleep and wake cycle. Diurnal rhythms - that lasts for 12 hours, like our body understanding the rhythm of day and night, infradian rhythms - rhythms that last longer than a day, like a 30-day menstrual cycle. And all of these rhythms are natural and have to and will happen, if we try to force and stop or change any of these rhythms, it usually just leads to stress, and most of the time our attempts are unsuccessful as well. So to be successful and to reduce stress, the easiest thing we can do is to understand how these rhythms and work with them rather than *against* them. Firstly, I marked a decade in the field of medicine, having started my medical school journey in July/Aug 2013. Secondly, and equally monumental, I began training in my dream location as a doctor. For those who've been following my journey for a while, you'd know about the different cities I've practiced in. I've been a doctor in both Bangalore and London, and now, I've transitioned to being a doctor in Cambridge. At the onset of this month, I commenced my "training job", akin to a residency. I've always been specific about my specialization and the place where I wanted to undergo my residency. For a considerable period, my heart was set on training in Cambridge, specifically in General Practice or Family Medicine. Although I plan to dive deeper into why I chose general practice in a future video, the decision to finally commit to this specialization was made late last year. I then took the MSRA exam, and based on my scores, applied exclusively for General Practice. I had my preferences for training locations: 1. Guys and St Thomas’ - London 2. University College Hospital - London 3. Imperial College Hospitals- London 4. Cambridge 5. Bristol 6. Oxford Although Cambridge was my ultimate choice, my initial inclinations leaned towards London. Having found a cozy flat and wonderful flatmates there, London began to feel like home. However, given the competitiveness of the top three programs in London, securing a spot was challenging. To me, the location of one's training is paramount, especially in the realm of medicine. While hard metrics like salary and career progression may show minimal variation based on training location in the long run, the soft skills and networking opportunities offered by premier institutions can prove invaluable in one's career. My attraction to Cambridge is multifaceted. Historically, I've always been enamored with prestigious universities and the aura of academic towns. On visiting both Oxford and Cambridge, the latter captivated me profoundly. Not only was it the architectural blend of ancient and modern structures, but the rich scientific legacy of Cambridge also played a role. The city has been home to luminaries like Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Sir Stephen Hawking, and numerous Nobel laureates. Walking the streets of Cambridge, where groundbreaking discoveries like the DNA triple helix took place, is an overwhelming experience. Despite my training being associated with Cambridge University Hospitals and University-listed GP practices, rather than the university directly, I still feel a deep connection. I will be teaching Cambridge University medical students and possibly pursuing academic work at the university. In the future, I might consider enrolling for a master's at one of the Cambridge colleges to get the full experience. For now, I'm thoroughly enjoying the rigorous training at Cambridge University Hospitals.
