What you are viewing is images and overlays that show the relationship between the alternate host plant abundance represented by the dark green zones in the base layer and the severity of comandra blister rust on lodgepole pine in the two upper layers. The lower disease layer consists of the first disease assessment taken two years after planting, and the uppermost most is severity in year three. So, to recap, we planted 7440 pine trees on a 1.5 m square grid. Only 18% of the area is occupied by the alternate host plant (dark green zones). By year two, 40% of the trees are infected, and by year three almost 60% of trees are infected. What's interesting is that not only are 60% infected, but the severity of infection (number of infections per tree) is very high within the alternate host patches. We can see by rotating the image that the disease severity is spatially correlated with the alternate host patches, which tells us that spread from the alternate host occurs by short range spread spores.
