The apostle Paul warns Timothy in the first letter against false teachings in the church of Ephesus. The book of Hebrews mentions false teachers as well as other books in the New Testament. Paul was instructing Timothy to stand firm against these false teachers in the church. Notice that these heresies came from the church. In the same way, false teachers have infiltrated the church as they bent the Bible in strange ways to support their teachings. The apostle gives Timothy the good signs that the teachers come from a pure heart, sincere faith, and clear conscience. These are the good signs and when these teachers depart from these good signs, warning signs come into play for which we must stand firm. The church of Ephesus fought these false teachers as we are told in Revelation 2 that Jesus commended them for standing firm against these false teachers. But notice that Jesus said He had one thing against them, "they had lost their first love!" In our Christian walks, anything that distracts us from God's love is false teaching.
