Subscribe today! Elixir® Strings was born in 1997. Although we were working with guitar strings already, they weren’t anywhere near a guitar. Instead, we were using them as convenient test subjects in our attempt to develop a better variety of push-pull cable. The coated strings worked quite well as cables, but they sounded terrible as guitar strings. (Picture a guitar strung with day-old spaghetti.) Working closely with a global player community of more than 15,000, we sought feedback and continued to fine-tune until we produced a coated string with proven long tone life. You can do that in many ways – using dynamics or “outside” notes for example – and employing repeating patterns of notes is another useful technique. Take any of your favourite solos and you’re likely to find repetition playing an important role in building excitement. In this video lesson, Elixir Strings artist Cameron Cooper shows you a great lick that starts low and finishes high (another great way of adding tension in itself) and is constructed from groups of repeating notes on three strings. There’s a little string-skipping section a la Nuno at the beginning, but the concept here can be applied to any genre, making it super-useful for every guitar player. The basic pentatonic “box” can feel limiting, but learning a slightly different approach can really open things up. In this short video lesson, Elixir Strings artist Matt Wheeler shows how taking a two note per string pattern and incorporating a slide up to the next position allows much wider-sounding pentatonic phrasing. Because the pattern repeats up the fretboard, it’s also easy to visualise, making this a great method for incorporating into improvised solos.
