It was Robert the Bruce's wish that when he died his body be buried at Dunfermline Abbey, he also asked that his heart be taken on crusade by his old friend and chief commander James Douglas to the Holy Land and finally buried in Melrose Abbey, and that his organs be buried in the Chapel of St Serf. Dunfermline Abbey had been the burial site for the kings and queens of Scotland since the late 11th century. Robert had requested to be buried in the Beachamp chapel at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary's in Warwick England where his young son had earlier been laid to rest. His will asked that his funeral be "with as little Pomp or vain Expenses of the World, as may be". And so, On the 5th of October a procession left from Kenilworth Castle. His body was followed by his chief mourner and stepson the Earl of Essex. As requested, his funeral service was quite ordinary especially considering his rank and accomplishments. Dudley was finally laid to rest on October 10, 1588. By the early 1640s, the Puritans had acquired substantial influence in Parliament. And legislation began being passed that reflected Puritan values. In 1645, Parliament introduced the Directory for Public Worship which was a guide of worship, that replaced the Book of Common Prayer and abolished the celebration of Christmas, Easter, and other traditional festivals. The Puritans viewed these celebrations as remnants of "popish" traditions and believed they encouraged immoral behavior. The ban on Christmas was formalized in 1647 when Parliament passed an ordinance that explicitly prohibited its observance. Oliver Cromwell Was a devout Puritan, and his beliefs and egan in values resonated deeply with many at the established cruis and the monarchy. While Cromwell was present in 1644 when Christmas was originally mandated to be a day of fasting and repentance. it wasn't Cromwell who first a enacted the ban, though for so many centuries people have said he did. When Oliver Cromwell eventually became the Lord Protector of the Realm in 1653 after the execution of Charles I the Christmas Ban legislation continued. And his government took measures to ensure its enforcement with varying degrees of success. One of the ironies of Cromwell's rule was his use of Hampton Court Palace as one of his residences. Originally built by Cardinal Wolsey and later taken over by Henry VIII, Hampton Court was a symbol of royalopulence.
