It's this connection which we love to explore and share on YouTube. <video> Expedition to Karangetang Volcano, Indonesia Description: In Part 3 of our 2024 Indonesian Expedition, we climb to the summit of Karangetang Volcano (also known as Api Siau) on the Island of Siau. Karangetang is a very active volcano - one of the most active volcanoes in the country and has erupted many times throughout history. The volcano has two main craters and is known for its explosive eruptions, which can produce dangerous pyroclastic flows and lahars. Without a track, we had to bush bash through dense jungle, then make a camp on top of volcanic rocks. Lokon, the older cone, reaches a height of 1,580 meters and has a flat, craterless top. Empung, the younger cone, features a 400-meter wide crater with a depth of 150 meters. The volcano's activity is primarily concentrated at Tompaluan, which has a history of frequent eruptions, including ash plumes, pyroclastic flows, and lava dome formation. The eruptions are typically andesitic in composition, reflecting the volcanic arc setting associated with the subduction of the Celebes Sea plate beneath the Sunda Plate. Lokon-Empung's ongoing activity poses a significant volcanic hazard, necessitating continuous monitoring and preparedness measures in the surrounding areas. </video> <video> FPV drone films Molten Rockfall on Merapi Volcano Description: Incredible up close footage taken by FPV drone of incandescent rockfall on Merapi Volcano, Indonesia. Incandescent rockfall on volcanoes like Merapi happens when gravity overcomes the strength of the lava dome or solidified lava flows near the summit. As the volcano erupts, it pushes molten rock (magma) to the surface. This magma can cool and solidify, forming a dome or flows. However, these structures are often unstable, especially during ongoing eruptions. Factors like pressure from rising magma, earthquakes, and gas explosions can weaken the lava dome or flows, causing sections to break off and tumble down the volcano's slopes.
