It was the height of the cold war and both countries sent men into harm’s way to fight and die in this tiny island nation. One county hoped that the revolution here would be the spark that would ignite an explosion of socialism all over the west. The other country would do everything in its power to put that spark out so that nations could remain free. In this video, I’ll show you the Memorial to the Fallen, which honors the nineteen American troops that died here. I’ll also show you the Memorial to the Cuban Internationalist Martyrs that honors the twenty-four Cubans that were killed on the Caribbean nation of Grenada. This conflict has been overlooked or forgotten by many, but those of you that are old enough might remember this obscure U.S. military operation in 1983 that was codenamed “Operation Urgent Fury”. The fighting lasted only eight days, and all the U.S. troops were gone within fifty-one days. The operation was the highlight of movie “Heartbreak Ridge” where Clint Eastwood played Gunny Highway, and to old jarheads like me it is one of our favorite Marine movies. We don’t have time in this video to tell the story of the conflict, but I’ll give you a brief synopsis. In 1974, Grenada gained its independence from the United Kingdom and from that point on, the new nation struggled with political conflict. Support for Marxist organizations were growing, and the situation was becoming bloody. The Cubans and the Soviets were getting involved and President Reagan knew that this flame must be extinguished before it got out of hand. When the fighting was over, six hundred eighty-four Americans, Grenadians, Cubans, and Soviets were killed, wounded, or injured. These monuments honor some of the fallen. Just outside of the Maurice Bishop International Airport stands “The Memorial to the Fallen in Grenada” which is proudly dedicated to the military of the United States. It is made up of two strong crossed arches surrounded by concrete filled steal posts that once were the base for a strong picket fence. At each of the four corners stand or stood two concrete benches. The monument was commissioned by President Ronald Reagan, and he was present in 1986 for its dedication. The monument was restored in 2006, but sadly, the monument is currently in desperate need of repair. The VFW plaque laid in 1995 sums up the monument best. It states, “To honor those members of the United States Military who, through commitment and sacrifice, returned freedom to Grenada”. On top of the hill, just about 200 yards away stands the “Memorial to the Cuban Internationalist Martyrs”. The monument is a platform painted red with a communist star in the middle. Above the star is a concrete Cuban flag and the main plaque. The main plaque states “In memory of the 24 Cuban internationalists who fell here defending a noble cause”. It lists the names of the Cubans who died in the conflict and then a quote from a man most will be familiar with. It states, “In that trench, they knew they were also defending their people and their country. The plaque is ironically written in English and that fact can be interpreted different ways. Surrounding the monument are memorials to each of the twenty-four Cubans who died in the conflict. The monument was completed and dedicated in 2017 and is said to be a symbol of friendship between the peoples and the governments of Cuba and Grenada. Hundreds of tribes dotted the continent and while they could often hold their own in battles against the Europeans, they often lacked the resources and man power to defeat them in a drawn-out war. The Shawnee, Tecumseh, had seen the way that the American Colonies had united against Great Britain and won their independence. It was clear that individually the colonies were no match against the great power of the crown, but when they united, they changed history. Tecumseh knew that if he could unite the tribes into a confederation to fight as one, they could also be a formidable force and could halt white expansion. If not for the Battle of Tippecanoe, Tecumseh’s dream may have changed the future of the United States, and our map could have looked much different than it does today. In this video, I’ll give you the back story, tell you about the battle itself, and take you to four locations relevant to the battle to show you the awesome sites while discussing the history. About 1805, Tecumseh’s brother Lalawéthika, later known as Tenskwatawa, or “The Prophet”, began to preach and lead a movement for the tribes to reject all ways of the Europeans, and to return back to the ways of their ancestors. They soon settled a new village, near modern day Greenville, Ohio with followers of their movement. The American pioneers began to be weary of the gathering of Indians from tribes from all over and a great concern was raised concerning their intentions. In 1808, due to the tension that was forming, Tecumseh and The Prophet decided to move their town further west, near where the Tippecanoe River empties into the Wabash River, outside of modern-day Lafayette, Indiana. This town became known as Prophetstown. Thousands of people from many tribes flocked the Prophetstown and lived communally as one people. It was the success of Prophetstown that likely encouraged and convinced Tecumseh that it was possible to unite all the tribes in one confederation. Harrison marched his troops up the Wabash River and built Fort Harrison near Terre Haute, Indiana. While at Fort Harrison, some Delaware chiefs reported the ill intentions at Prophetstown and one of the guards was shot. This was all that Harrison needed to justify his campaign against Prophetstown. Harrison marched his men further up the Wabash River near the mouth of the Tippecanoe River to Prophetstown. He set up his camp on a knoll along Burnett’s Creek, just a short distance from his enemy. Plans were made for Harrison to meet with The Prophet the next morning, but he ordered that his men bed down fully dressed and prepared for eminent battle. They kept their fires burning bright in order to illuminate the dark. The actions that night have been disputed. Many have stated that The Prophet was against any attack against the Americans and that he tried everything that he could to ensure that the warriors followed Tecumseh’s command to not fight. However, some have said that The Prophet was too arrogant to avoid contact and encouraged the warriors to fight. No matter the true story, The Prophet promised the warriors that he would chant and pray to cast spells to assure that no Indian would be harmed, and that the American camp would be full of confusion. An American named Ben had deserted to the Indians and attempted to lead a group to Harrison’s tent to assassinate him, but he was captured by the sentries. An estimated seven hundred warriors completely circled the American camp. No one is sure who fired the first shot but around 4 a.m. on 7 November 1811, the battle began. Fighting erupted all around the camp but some of the heaviest fighting happened at the rear where Captain Spier Spencer’s Indiana Yellowjacket Militia was positioned. The unit was nicknamed the “Yellowjackets” due to the light-colored buckskins that they wore. The battle lasted for about two hours, and eventually the warriors retreated into the forest. The Americans had about 188 casualties and about 62 died in the battle or from wounds sustained in the battle. It is estimated that about 120 of The Prophet’s warriors were killed or wounded. The next day Harrison’s troops went to Prophetstown and found it abandoned except for one elderly sick woman. The Americans burned the town to the ground. The American success of the battle has been debated. Some eastern newspapers called it a disaster and even a defeat. Many well-known and well-loved Kentuckians and Indiana pioneers were killed. Harrison of course called it a major success with the destruction of Prophetstown. It was started by the French, finished by the British, and it’s strategic location prevented the island of Grenada from ever being sacked again. It is one of the few forts in the world that has never fired a shot in anger. Just beside this fort is another fort that was once used as a mental institution, but now lays in ruins from being blasted by the U.S. Military in the 1983 invasion known as Operation Urgent Fury. In this video I’ll show you the sights and tell you the history of these two magnificent Caribbean fortresses. Now back to the forts. The French first settled on the island of Grenada, in 1650, and held dominion over it for one hundred and thirteen years until it was surrendered to the British in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. This treaty ended the Seven Years War, or what we refer to in the United States as the French and Indian War. Sixteen years later, in 1779, the French made plans to retake the island. Now, Caribbean assaults of the time almost always involved a naval bombardment with a landing force, which was usually Marines Ooh-Rah, hitting the beach to finish up the attack. The harbor and capital city of St. George was protected by Fort George which was strong bastion of defense. The French were very familiar with the topography of the island and formulated a plan to land their forces a few miles from the city on a beach called Dragons Bay. From here they hit the jungles and circled back around to attack the city where it did not have any defenses. The British were caught by total surprise and plan was very effective and successful. After taking Grenada back under control, the French realized that they wouldn’t have been able to take the island if there had been defenses built on the ridge above the city called Hospital Hill. They immediately began construction on Fort Frederick. Unlike almost all fort defenses of coastal cities, this fort faced inland to prevent a rear attack. In 1783, The Treaty of Versailles returned Grenada back to the British from the French. This is the same treaty that gave the United States its independence, the Bahamas back to the British, Florida back to Spanish control and other territorial changes. The British took over on the construction of the fort and finished it in 1791. Due to its strategic location Grenada’s defenses were not tested again and it is one of the few forts in the world that has never fired a shot in anger. Today it is a location with an amazing vantage point of St. George and the island. A side story from the area is that it was once the location of the San Souci Estate, a planation that Henry Christophe was once enslaved at. Christophe escaped the plantation and stowed away off the island. He soon found himself in Haiti, and eventually became it’s ruler. He was the only King of Haiti. Just about one hundred yards away stands Fort Matthew. Well, I should say the ruins of Saint Matthew. The fort was built from 1784-1790 and is the largest fort on the island. It was named after Edward Matthew who was the governor of Grenada during its construction. Fort Matthew was known for its tunnels that connect to different parts of the fort. Those tunnels were the reason for a tragedy that happened here in modern day. In 1880, the fort was turned into a mental institution for patients from all over the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. During Operation Urgent Fury, in 1983, the United States military invaded Grenada in an effort to bring back order to the island and to keep Marxist ideology from spreading to other parts of the Caribbean. One story states that the U.S. hit the wrong target and another story states that the U.S. had heard that enemy leaders were hiding in the tunnels and launched an attack with helicopters. Eighteen civilians were killed in this attack that had been housed in the mental institution here. When you visit Fort Matthew you can imagine how it once looked and the history that took place on this spot for the last quarter millennia. Being able to visit ruins like this is a real treat for historians like me. If this fort was in the United States, everything would be extremely controlled for safety and we wouldn’t be able to wander where ever we pleased and take in the history here. Old West History! Description: This massacre in a little town in northwest Colorado led to one of the largest losses of land for native tribes in the Old West. The attempt to Christianize and “civilize” the Indians backed the Ute Nation into a corner and put them in a rage to preserve their way of life. The U.S. army was called in, including some Buffalo Soldiers, to help calm the uprising. But the fire was too hot and exploded into a bloody battle and vicious massacre. There were no winners in this conflict. In this video, I’ll show you the sights and tell the story of what is known today as the Meeker Massacre. Gold was discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s, and white settlers exploded into the territory, even though much of it belonged the Utes. At that time, the Utes held a large territory of approximately 125,000 square miles. Under the Ute Treaty of 1863, the Utes were confined to a much smaller area of land mostly in western Colorado. Indian agencies were soon established in Colorado. In 1868, the Hunt Treaty was signed which preserved the Ute’s right to hunt in the Glenwood Springs area. In 1878, Nathan Meeker was appointed as the Indian agent in the White River Indian Agency. Meeker was known for introducing irrigation to the west. His mission was to Christianize them and to “control the nomadic Utes by instilling an agricultural life-style”. The Utes would not and could not conform to the ways of a farmer. Still, Meeker pushed them to build houses and plow fields. Meeker wrote in his letter to the Department of Indian Affairs, “their needs are so few that they do not wish to adopt civilized habits. What we call conveniences and comforts are not sufficiently valued”. The act that lit the match was when Meeker had the Ute’s horseracing track plowed into a field. The Utes began to show anger and resistance, and even physically assaulted Meeker at least once. Meeker began to fear the worst and called for the military to come to the agency. U.S. Army Major T.T. Thornburgh was sent from Fort Steele, in Rawlings, Wyoming to help maintain the peace. He brought a detachment of three companies, with one hundred fifty-three soldiers, including some Buffalo Soldiers, and twenty-five civilian militiamen. The Utes surely remembered the Sand Creek Massacre fifteen years earlier and felt that they needed to stand up to the soldiers. While the army was in route, they were intercepted by three Ute leaders that told Thornburgh that bringing armed troops onto the reservation would cause an uprising. Major Thornburgh misunderstood the communication with the Utes and thought they were saying that they would not fight. On 29 September 1879, Major Thornburgh crossed onto the Ute Reservation in what would be called the White River Expedition. The Utes, under the command of Chief Colorow, met up with the army near Milk Creek. Both sides were not sure of the other groups intentions when they came upon each other. A hat was dropped, which was likely by accident, and it was taken as a cue to begin firing. Both sides almost simultaneously fired on the other and the Battle of Milk Creek was on. Joseph Rankin, who was one of the scouts with the army escaped the battle and rode one hundred sixty miles in twenty-seven and a half hours, back to Rawlings, Wyoming. The first thing he did when he got back to Rawlings was to hit Foote’s Saloon where he had a few drinks to calm his nerves. He then went to the Carbon County Clerk to wire the news back east. Due to Rankin’s heroic ride, the army was reenforced out of Fort Lewis in southern Colorado, by Captain Francis Dodge and his thirty-five Buffalo Soldiers. The battle lasted the next six days. At the end of the fighting, thirty-seven Utes had been killed and thirteen soldiers, including Major Thornburgh. Seventy-five percent of the horses and mules were killed by the Utes. At the same time that the battle with U.S. troops was taking place at Milk Creek, some of the Ute’s attacked the White River Indian Agency and killed every single man working there, including Nathan Meeker. They took Meeker’s wife Arvilla, his daughter Josephine, Flora Price, and her two children as hostages and held them for twenty-three days. Josephine Meeker was a new medical doctor and one of the first female doctors in the old west. This event became known as what was called the “Meeker Massacre”. The army quickly sent a large occupation force to maintain order in the area. The nation was outraged and called for action. President Rutherford B. Hayes ordered for the Utes to be gathered and under the new treaty, they were put onto three reservations. These reservations exist today as the Southern Ute, the Ute Mountain Ute, and the Uintah-Ouray. The Ute’s had sacrificed almost all of western Colorado. The first attempt to settle the island of Grenada was made by the British in 1609, but the native Carib Indians attacked them relentlessly and the settlement was abandoned. Seventeen years later, in 1626, the French attempted a settlement in Grenada, but they too were driven from the island. A quarter of a century later, the French again attempted settlement when they purchased land from the Caribs for knives, beads and two bottles of brandy. However just a year later, in 1651, the two hundred French settlers began to be attacked by the Caribs who intended to yet again drive them off of the island. About eight hundred Carib warriors attacked the French fort but their bows and arrows were no match for firearms and cannon. After wiping out hundreds in the initial attack the French decided to end the conflict once and for all by wiping out the Caribs. Fighting persisted while the French drove the Caribs further and further back until they reached the northern tip of the island. Eventually only forty warriors were left alive and with the sea at their backs they accepted their destiny of defeat. The remaining Carib Indians deiced that they would not surrender and chose to leap from this cliff to their deaths on the rocks below. The French named the spot Le Morne de Sauteurs, which translates in English to “the dreary jumpers”. The town that exists there today is named Sauteurs, or simply “jumpers”. At the site of this event, Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church was built in 1721. The current building was built in 1840. In the rear of the church is an old cemetery that has a certain beauty of its own. One of the people buried here is Walter Clement Noel, the first person to ever be diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. Noel was a Grenadian native whom while attending dental school in the United States had chronic health problems. His blood was examined and was it discovered that his cells were elongated sickle shaped. Noel completed dental school and returned to Grenada to practice dentistry. He died seven years after his diagnosis. It is estimated that twenty million people worldwide suffer from sickle cell disease.
