Description: The first act of any government is, or should be, the defence of the state. Put simply, that means having enough trained soldiers, tanks, aircraft, ships and military hardware to protect the nation in the event of a crisis. But in each one of those categories the Armed Forces are now lacking. Crucially, troop numbers have fallen off a cliff and, worse still, all of the indicators suggest the problem will only get worse. Very soon the Army will be equipped with 153 Challenger 3 tanks, slightly more than the 134 owned by Switzerland, a neutral country that hasn’t fought a war since 1847. On top of this worrying detail is the fact that almost every single British Army infantry regiment is understrength, the Royal Navy has recently been forced to decommission three warships in a bid to cut costs, and the RAF recruitment numbers suggest it is still recoiling from the disclosure that it used unlawful positive discrimination practices in a bid to boost the number of non-white pilot applicants – a reflection of what would appear to be the Armed Forces’ obsession with diversity. Description: Sometimes things don't go as planned - let's deep dive into how an £80m RAF Typhoon fighter jet comes back as a cabriolet! A fighter jet has landed safely after an "in-flight emergency", the RAF has said. The air force confirmed the canopy of the Typhoon, from XI (F) Sqn at RAF Coningsby, had been "jettisoned by the pilot" during a flight which took it over the North Sea. A spokesperson for the RAF had earlier said it was due to a suspected bird strike. The aircraft was recovered safely to its Lincolnshire base and the pilot was fine, they added. Richard Boettcher, a photographer who was at the scene when the fighter jet landed, said that he heard "over a scanner that a pilot had declared an emergency due to loosing his canopy". "The jet with no canopy was escorted back to base with a wing man. Red Arrows are DISAPPEARING in 2030! Description: 'They're the iconic jets that dazzle crowds with their breathtaking air acrobatics. But the Red Arrows are in serious danger of being hibernated, veterans fear. No replacements are lined up for the existing ageing fleet of Hawk T1s, scheduled to be retired in 2030. Ex-RAF pilots fear the high number of hours flown, uncovered by MailOnline's probe, will force them to be stood down earlier unless they are preserved. For fans, this could result in very limited displays, with little aerobatics to expand the lifespan of the jets. A former RAF fast-jet pilot told MailOnline: 'If they don't get new aircraft, the Reds are finished.' Ex-Squadron Leader Tim Davies told MailOnline: 'The pilots and engineers are doing their best. 'If they are ordered to keep the aircraft flying, they will as long as it is safe to do so. 'The military are experts at managing their fleets. Each jet has a maximum service life and they know how to maximise this… but if they do not get new aircraft, the Reds are finished. 'You can reduce the demands on the aircraft by reducing the level of training and by flying less dynamic displays which reduces the G-count.' Mr Davies, who worked with Aeralis on its next-generation trainer jet after his 14-year RAF career, said there is no British-made jet available to replace the ageing fleet of T1 Hawks. He said the engines on the Hawk T2 'keep blowing up' and as a heavier aircraft they are not suited to the Red Arrows. Description: A theatre in Paris which is known for its radical shows and exhibitions has been occupied by more than 250 African migrants after they were let in for a free event five weeks ago. The Gaîté Lyrique theatre in Paris staged the conference, entitled Reinventing the welcome for refugees in France, on December 10. It involved talks hosted by academics from top universities and Red Cross officials, and saw activists welcome in the migrants. But when the conference was finished, the migrants, who mainly come from France's former west African colonies, refused to leave the venue.
