That was the original plan, but we are loving traveling so much, who knows? Our family took this leap after Jess' father passed away in 2014 after a long fight with ALS, Lou Gehrig's, at just 53. Most people who have been to Alaska have heard of the Lu-Lu Belle in Valdez. Captain Fred who built the Lu-Lu Belle and has been captaining the ship since 1979 was planning on retiring after last summer, but he came back for one more season, and we are so glad he did! We took the church service cruise that runs every Sunday during the summer. Alaska really knows how to do church! In last episode, you guys saw us totally fail at trying to see bears in Valdez and in this one, we attempt it 2 more times! Not only did we find a bear, but we also got also got to see who comes out on top between a bear and a sea lion competing over Alaskan salmon! With a bear sighting checked off the list, we headed over the Thompson Pass after stopping to take in the amazing misty waterfalls right outside of Valdez and started our trek to McCarthy! Many had mentioned to us that the road would be rough, and Corey waited until we got to the very end of the line to give his assessment and recommendations. The girls got into vlogging for this one, and Corey and I had so much fun seeing on a whole new level this experience through their eyes! We returned to Valdez Lake in this episode to check out the icebergs that had broken off of Valdez Glacier, and to see how much had changed since we had been there 6 years ago was crazy! Unfortunately, you are no longer able to camp at this location, but it is 100% necessary in our opinion to visit and find a way to get out on the water. If we had been in the Reflection, we would have taken our Inflatable kayaks out (Link to those here:  https://amzn.to/3VyZz2k ) , but since we were in the Lineage with a little less storage space for our family of 4, the kayaks didn’t make the cut. Thankfully, Valdez Stay & Play had us covered and dropped the kayaks in the water waiting for us! Our favorite part was that you could take a guided tour with them if you wanted, or you could explore on your own for 3 hours with the rentals! To say that we were left speechless multiple times is an understatement! This place is seriously surreal, and the best part is that it is changing on a daily basis so you can go back over and over and see something different! Next up was a trip to the Solomon Gulch Hatchery to see if we could spot any bears! We found an insane amount of fish and a creature that we were not expecting! Lily, Leila and I try our hand (literally) at catching salmon, and we head back to our campground for some excellent local pizza! In case you didn’t know, breakfast around a camp fire is one of my (Jess) favorite things ever! And I can’t think of a better way to spend our last few hours in Whittier! The next few days were jam packed with visiting friends in Anchorage, washing the rig at Highmark (thanks so much, Matthew!), and making one last trip to see if we could get a glimpse of that elusive mountain peak - Denali! If you recall, we tried to see it once before at the South Denali Lot but were totally skunked. This time we headed to the North Denali lot which is so much better for overnight camping. Right before dinner, a white mountain peak appeared and the camp host told us and many other people there that it was Denali. Overjoyed by our good luck, we made dinner and headed to bed. We are so thankful that we ended up staying there that night because the next morning, the REAL Denali made an appearance, and we got to feel that elation all over again! Unfortunately, the weather man wasn’t very truthful the night before either and all of our stuff got drenched! NOTE: Always put your outdoor stuff away at night when in Alaska! We met up with some of our incredible FOS Crew who were also in the area for a group Outback Steakhouse dinner and a tour of the Lineage. It is a pretty crazy story! NOTE: If you do not want to pay for the tour, you can still walk through the town and go into many of the National Park buildings. You just won’t have any access to the Mill. That is only available to see with a guided tour. Is there anything better than cooking a hot dog over the fire after an awesome day of exploring? After over 7 miles of hiking with 1000 feet of elevation, that dinner was perfect for our last night in McCarthy! The jarring drive back down that 60 miles of dirt road took us over 3 hours since we weren’t interested in damaging the Lineage, but we finally made it and began our trek out of Alaska! On our way to Destruction Bay, we experienced an FOS 1st! After 7 years on the road, we finally got to see a grizzly bear up close and personal! And it was so worth the wait! Thankfully we had our “bear viewing window”! Moochdocking is when you are camping at a friend or family member’s home with your RV, and we wanted to share some things that you need to remember to make it a good experience for both you and your host: 1. Be sure to communicate before you arrive about what time you plan on arriving, how long you are staying and the exact date that you are planning to leave. 2. Have a conversation about what electricity and water options, if any, are available to you at your host’s house and be prepared (ie. fill your water tank, empty gray and black before you arrive, have batteries charged or generator fueled up and ready to go, etc.) if there is nothing available. 3. Discuss dinner expectations - are all parties eating dinner together every night? Will you be cooking, will they be cooking, will you be going out to dinner? Having clarity on these items will help to ensure that everyone has a great time, that you don’t overstay your welcome and, as we always say about bringing your RV to someone’s house, that you truly are the best house guests! Many people think our life is solely about seeing new and never before seen places, and while that is a really exciting part of this lifestyle, one of our favorite things about full-time Rving is getting to go back and experiencing our favorite things AGAIN! Six years ago on our first trip to Alaska, we had the opportunity to visit the Little Tutka Bay Bible Church once on our own and then again with our friends, Less Junk More Journey before we left Alaska. Going back was at the top of our “must do” list for our trip to Alaska this summer and, somehow it was even better the 3rd time around! Even though this summer was our second trip to Alaska, we had never been on a wildlife boat tour before. Sometimes it will be because of the people that you meet there. Sometimes it will be because of the experiences that you shared there with the loved ones and friends. And then other times, it may be because of the sear beauty of a place that will forever leave an impression on you. Homer is one of those places for us and for all three reasons listed above. The beauty, the memories and the people who we were so excited to see again on this second visit! We stayed on our friends’, Ashton and Amanda, new homestead overlooking the mountains and glaciers across the bay and got to make a new friend, Jet, from Holland who was helping out on the farm. Ashton and Amanda fulfilled a dream that we have had for the last 6 years since we were in Homer last: crossing the bay from the Homer Spit to the state park for some time on the water and an amazing hike to China Poot Lake. We had a quick stop at Gull Island to check out some Oyster Catchers and Bald Eagles and got to see one of the 11 lighthouses in Alaska! On the way home, we stopped in Halibut Cove to check out one of the coolest coffee shops we have ever seen and walk the raised boardwalk that circles the island! After a quick race back into the marina, we headed back to the farm for a movie on the outside of the Lineage! Stay tuned for next week as we finally get to go fishing for some Alaskan salmon! You also got to see us pull into our epic campsite! After an amazing night being lulled to sleep by the rushing Kennecott River just outside the RV, we ran (literally) to catch the bus that will drive you from the foot bridge to McCarthy and then Kennecott. Thankfully we didn’t get any flat tires on the drive! Even though we started off by stopping at the visitor center and then walking through the abandoned town of Kennecott and by the old mill, our first adventure there took us miles further! One of the most amazing things to do in this area is to hike out to Root Glacier and then actually get to walk out onto its enormous and slippery surface! NOTE: This was such a fun experience, but it would have been much better if we had gotten a chance to hike on the glacier with crampons. If you plan on hiking this trail on your own without a guide, we highly recommend that you have them. You will be able to get to so many cool spots and see the true blue of the glacier! ABSOLUTELY!!! The Ap Index wasn’t very high, but it was the first clear night in a while, so Corey set an alarm and we are so glad he did! We got an unbelievable show between the aurora and the Perseid meteor shower. And this time, we finally had a camera that could capture it in real time to share with you guys! We had planned an early morning hike up to Exit Glacier the next day but that got pushed back a little bit, because we were up for over 2 hours in the middle of the night watching aurora show! Visiting Exit Glacier again 6 years later was crazy especially when you could clearly see how much the glacier has receded in that short amount of time. There are so many great hikes in Alaska and the rest of this country for that matter. Even if you only have a short period of time, it is always worth it to get outside and get some fresh air and exercise! If you are ever in Seward, be sure to stop at the adorable little blue van for some coffee and donuts - Caines Head Coffee and Sweet Shoppe! And tell them FOS sent you! Next up was finally taking the time to drive through the very long tunnel to Whittier. The last time we were in Alaska, we didn’t stop as we were told by so many that it wasn’t worth it. Man, are we glad we didn’t listen to that advice on this trip! Whittier turned out to be WAY more than we planned for and proved to be another reminder to “Stay flexible, my friends”! PS. Description

Thanks for visiting Finding Our Someday! We are Corey and Jessie, and we sold our home in Maine and almost everything we own (ok, ok...there are a few bins in Jess' mother's garage!) and moved into our Grand Design Reflection 28bhts with our girls, Lily and Leila, to travel for a while and find a new place to call home. That was the original plan, but we are loving traveling so much, who knows?

Our family took this leap after Jess' father passed away in 2014 after a long fight with ALS, Lou Gehrig's, at just 53. He didn't get his "someday", so we decided not to wait to find ours.
