How does he do this? By arguing with three easy steps: 1) The sense argument - explaining that since our senses lie to us we can't believe anything we gain from our senses, 2) The Dream Argument - we can't be sure even 'certain' sense experiences are real, because we foolishly think our dreams are real when in the dream. Who can say, are you dreaming now?, and 3) the Evil Genius Argument - there is a possibility that a very strong and evil being might be deceiving us about the very nature of reality. How would you even know if you were being so deceived? As a result, we must conclude that nothing is real. Why not? Description: Is Evil just a matter of opinion? Moral Philosopher Philippa Foot, and one of the founders of contemporary Virtue Ethics, has a clear answer that rests upon her understanding of Natural Goodness. Many moral philosophers think that all moral judgments are based upon personal preferences, and that objective determinations of moral good or evil do not exist. Foot disagreed with this idea. She did not believe that actions such as slavery, the Holocaust, racism or sexual assault were simply a matter of opinion - or actions that might personally make you feel uncomfortable. Foot argued that such actions are universally evil. How does she make that judgment? Description: Frederick Nietzsche offers a rather interesting thought experiment concerning what he calls 'The Eternal Recurrence.' That is, what if you learned your life eternally repeated? What if you were to live your life over and over again? Would that thought fill you with dread? Would you hate the idea of having to relive your miserable existence over and over again? If so, Nietzsche suggests you aren't living this life very well! Maybe it's time to live it better, so if you were destined to repeat it, you would not hate the experience as much as you do! To understand the Five Ways you have to start here, in Part 1, Question 2, Article 1 of the Summa Theologica: https://www.newadvent.org/summa/1002.htm#article1 Aquinas believes that reason strengthens one's faith, and he argues that God's existence is self-evident, but not everyone understand that point. Why's that? Because only those who actually understand the nature of God properly understand that God is self-evident. To be clear, believers don't need to understand God's existence is self-evident to believe, but such knowledge actually helps their faith. And atheists who deny God's existence is self-evident aren't proving God doesn't exist. They are just explaining that they don't understand what God is, which is completely understandable since they don't believe God exists. The actual proofs come later (article 3/Video 3). But for now, in this video, Aquinas is simply arguing that philosophical arguments can explain God's nature, and such arguments can strengthen one's faith. Now if you don't think God's existence is self-evident, great. This video is for you! Aquinas, of course, considers several objections to his argument. A cartoon Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson argues Aquinas is wasting his time, since science has found no evidence for God. A modern anthropologist argues everyone naturally has knowledge of the Divine. And St. Anselm of Canterbury argues everyone can easily know that God exists thanks to his Ontological Argument. But no surprise, St. Thomas responds! Welcome to First Person Philosophy!

My name is Dr. Mike Miller, and I'm an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and I'm here to introduce you to some incredible philosophers and their remarkable ideas!

The philosophers in this series - many of the big names in the history of philosophy, including Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes and Mill, and contemporary philosophers alike - will tell you exactly what you need to know about their lives, books, and ideas.

I received my PhD from Boston College where I specialized in Medieval Philosophy. My dissertation was on Thomas Aquinas, divine power and human freedom - fun stuff! I enjoy learning all kinds of wisdom, but I have a special interest in metaphysics and Islamic Philosophy. I love to teach and introduce others to philosophy, and I hope you enjoy learning more from these great thinkers.
