The Pathfinder Club guard of honor and the AY ministry band colorfully displayed art by forming rings around the temporal abode of his lifeless body, hopefully waiting for the sound of the Lord's trumpet; or a harp, for this case- because he dearly loved it. The sun had leisurely set a day before this agonizing moment and never shone brightly again. Mayaka Benjamin Ogaro, emphasized the need to exercise paramount diligence in God's work. There are many relevant episodes to recount as we sink deep into this subject. However, his most prevalent input in my Christian journey was unease with endeavors anchored solely on human effort. "In vain"- he would describe them. One day, he was recuperating from second-degree burn injuries at the university hospital after an unprecedented accident. With my long-time buddy, Ngala, we discreetly toed into the room and found him in excruciating pain. I said a prayer and read from the words of Paul in Rom 8:28, "For all things work, for the good of those who love Him....". He probably knew I would read it, my favorite portion of the scripture. He interjected and carried on with the devotional moment reading from Rev 2:10. The ill motives of Satan were laid bare. The adversary attempts all strategies to woe the fallen human race to his side. If he gains not by force, he employs great artifice. Benjamin was convinced his accident was God's will and part of the great controversy. He admonished us to double our efforts in prayer than lamentations in times of adversity. He asked me to thank and share with the poor in seasons of prosperity. This way, we would be close to the everlasting spring of comfort, Jesus Christ. His final words affirmed Satan's main agenda to misrepresent God's loving Character. He convinces humanity to be ungrateful during trials that last only a season. God allowed him to inflict pain on humankind but never to overpower our will and decision-making power. Through fallen human agents, Satan presents God as the author of our misfortunes. Like in Luke chapter 4, he promises earthly rewards in the form of pleasures we desire, financial gains, lovely families, and shortcuts to easy living that make us forget the agony of Calvary and the price paid by Christ's own blood. He winded up with a reminder I have never forgotten. "Those who endure to the end.. shall receive the Crown of life.." Rev 2:10. "I want to be counted worthy to suffer trial and reproach for God's sake, for though he casts me into flames today and burn my skin to ashes, I will regain my life, never to lose it again. Pray that you never become a victim of his charms. His gains allure provisionally, but God sustains forever. This is the greatest conflict ever, a choice between God and Satan" With tear-dimmed eyes, these moments lingered as I watched soil gradually take its piece. "Fairest moments soon decay, youth and beauty pass away, " they sang, engulfed in a somber mood. It is a difficult tussle, but I hope we all overcome this conflict. I hope to see him again. We may have absolutely no pleasure in the stimulants we sometimes so madly indulge in. It has not always been in pursuing pleasure that we have periled life, reputation, and reason. It has been the desperate attempt to escape from torturing memories, from a sense of insupportable loneliness and a dread of some strange impending doom. All these artifices work against us to deny us an inheritance in heaven, but the love of Christ resounds, and grace abounds in our moments of fragility. Many times the environment in the dwellings below seem crowded yet- in reality- so deserted like the dwarves at dawn. While I take responsibility for my gross derelictions of duty and aptly consider them as the chief causatives of my agonies, I also have to vehemently lament why God, for some reason and seasons, torments my spirit as if I were already a castaway. I would tell endless stories of bitter betrayals and disappointments in the most needful hours by those I have trusted the most. Sadly, accepting that humans in this world owe you nothing is a hard pill to swallow when you think they, indeed, owe you everything. I would also tell countless tales of how I have cursed my existence because of losing loved ones, not to mention, persevering hunger and starvation. Dear brethren, earth is all wails and groans of discomfort. Earth is where selfishness and unkindness prevail in the atmosphere. Where smiles last only a while and happiness- a tough riddle. Where people worship evil for temporal pleasure, wealth and fame. Here, sons disown their fathers and mothers repudiate their daughters. Friends only love you when they need you. Isn't it time we thought of leaving?? Well, I think so. Earth's evening sun is sinking low and soon darkness shall set in. It's time to refine our characters by dying to self for Christ to come and lift us out of this mess. In Job 19:25-26, the apostle heartens in the most toilsome day and a seemingly approaching dark night, "I know that my redeemer lives and that in the end, he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh, I will see God"- NIV. Many of you, like Job, long for the appearance of our redeemer. As the evening sun sinks, our homeland becomes the everlasting hope. We have to wait for the bright dawn of the next day, the symbolic home, but before- comes the darkest night. On that night, trials and temptations abound, storms rage, and astoundingly, Christ sleeps beside us. He will always be near in the darkest hour but drowsing- allowing you to take the boldness of Job. Mid the stormy sea, he notices every perplexity and, with pity, focuses on our frail, skimpy efforts trying, in vain, to cure ourselves. He waits on us to relent and rest our cares on Him. He wants us to acknowledge our inability to puzzle out our woes and cast all those muddles upon Him (Mathew 11:28). That's the art of dying to self. Upon our veritable surrender, He wakes up to command the winds and the waves. The sea returns still and the morning gradually breaks. Forgiveness was a divine doctrine and rest was assured at the feet of Jesus. During my days in high school, sabbaths were a sacred oasis of respite. Weekdays were filled with the agonies of schoolwork. From difficult academic rigors and thriving with school bullies to surviving without enough stipends to sustain a decent meal. Both the diligent scholars and the rebellious spirits longed for this day to find rest away from the corridors of horror. Beloved Christians, many joined us for worship, neither because they were Adventists nor because they revered the sabbath. Most people were coming to church to flee from school bullies and the weight of textbooks. Indeed, it was a promise of liberation. Eventually, most of these opportunistic comrades would turn into the most illustrious and ardent believers of the Seventh-Day Adventist community. As I look deep into the words of Chris. M. O, "Utapewa jina jipya, usiitwe mtesi" I walk backwards to my high school adventures. The comrades who renounced their former scores of evil often endured a lot of condemnation and rejection. Their affirmation of Christ was, to many, a theatrical display. Ananias did not believe Paul was converted. He became the author of a stark contradiction that I have witnessed among believers today. Why do we zealously take part in winning souls if, after their conversion, we doubt the biddings of the spirit and be constant reminders of their own shame?? Many sinners with heavy hearts and burdened souls end up finding reprieve in the streets of worldly amusements and rejection in their Father's house. Christ says, (Mathew 11:28) " Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy-laden..." Why would He call them who are filled with the burden of sin only to constantly condemn them? The rendition Sauli wa Tarso is a wake-up call to Christians who doubt the saving power of Jesus Christ. Most of them occupy the highest ranks of service in the church just like Ananias. Paul in his cloak as a Pharisee and a teacher of the law was the worst persecutor of Christians in his time. However, after his conversion, the gospel witnessed a seismic triumph with the baptism of Paul, who broke the barrier between the Gentiles and the Jews by spreading the good news to the former. It is our prayer that we seek true conversion like Paul, and turn away from the outward reverence of the law without manifesting the fruits of the holy spirit. May the church be a sanctuary of mercy, a refuge for the weary soul. It became clear that even my falls and struggles were part of a divine plan, a refining fire that would ultimately strengthen my resolve and illuminate the path to inner peace. As you and I trudged onward, I urge us to take solace in Romans 8:31: "What shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?" This verse serves as a clarion call, reminding us that we can overcome the world's temptations with unwavering faith, for the Almighty is our guiding light and protector. With each step, our determination will grow. The world's temptations will lose their luster as we rediscover the priceless treasure of inner peace through service to God. I realize today that genuine contentment lies not in fleeting pleasures but in the profound connection with the Divine, in acts of love, compassion, and selflessness. In this spiritual voyage, I have lost friends because of my firmness in what heaven requires of me. In the adventure, I learned that the world's temptations may be alluring, but true inner peace is found in the steadfast pursuit of God's purpose. It is a quest marked by resilience, faith, and unwavering hope, a voyage where the promise of Romans 8:18 is fulfilled, and the glory of inner peace is revealed to those who persist in the face of temptation. After all, it would be a waste of time and effort to labor this much, all in vain. A man's greatness lies in the consciousness of an honest purpose in life. In our course, we have no choice but to focus on our foundational principles and the needs of our existence. This fact, he rooted deep inside me. Dear gospel ministers, we are admonished to seek indifference in this rendition. We are captives in a foreign land where the intricate dances and drums of the locals often overshadow our resilience. When others falter and sway, holding fast to the golden threads of our principles will help us sing the songs of Zion in the loudest voices possible. Because salvation is by grace through faith, I believe that among the countless number of people standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands (see Revelation 7:9), I shall see the prostitutes from the brothels and streets in Nrb, who tearfully told me that they could find no other employment to support their young children. I shall see the woman who had an abortion and is haunted by guilt and remorse but did the best she could faced with grueling alternatives. The businessman besieged with debt who sold his integrity in a series of desperate transactions. The insecure clergyman addicted to being liked, who never challenged his people from the pulpit but longed for unconditional love. The sexually abused teen molested by her father and now selling her body on the street, who, as she falls asleep each night after her last 'trick', whispers the name of the unknown God she learned about. The church is forever, a home for ALL. The blood of the lost impenitent child of God, at the expense of impunity from the elders, pastors, deacons, worshippers, and ministers like you and I, shall haunt our conscience forever. A cold weather seeped into this land wrapping everything around. Surfaces were freezing creating a delicate lattice of ice. The grass was brittle and frosted. Several isolated homesteads dotting the hilly landscape were clearly visible from a distance. From them, arose tendrils of smoke through the chimneys, an emblem of life and hope. Accompanied by students from Karura Adventist Secondary School, we dared to shout Adventism in a land predominantly occupied by Catholic and protestant religions. After all, the Bible qualifies all of us to be His sons through believing. Beloved, we were committed to weave the culture of Adventism with the story of redemption. As a matter of fact, we had done so many times with the help of the Holy Spirit and won souls for Jesus. However, the weather and the external environment were extremely harsh. The air was often crisp with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers. The situation quickly affected me and I developed an upper respiratory tract infection that weighed me down for the rest of the period. My counterparts did not relent. They braved the un-retreating rains to proceed with our schedule as planned. As I lay in dismay, profound thoughts of this sacrifice played through my mind. "Why would I suffer this much in the name of the gospel only to be cast away?" Isn't this gospel primarily a tool for my redemption before the rest? First to the Jews, then to the Gentiles right? Dear Adventist ministers, we are powerful instruments of the gospel. However, this secret torment gnaws at my spirit every day. Whenever I am involved in this solemn task, I become the first witness of the gospel truth. Yet in my heart, a shadow lurks. Although we exercise zeal, it is counted all but dross if our hearts remain ensnared in sin. Why would we subject ourselves to such grinding and jangling experiences in harsh environmental settings if whatever we profess doesn't work belief within ourselves? The words of 1st Corinthians 9:27 make it even more tormenting within. "...I discipline my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I will not be disqualified.." This moment of reflection tore me apart. Although a vessel of clay, cracked and imperfect, I seek to be in before mercy gates lock me out. As we sang this second stanza, I blinked repeatedly to hold my tears back. Multitudes were coming for the redemption call, yet I remained a cracked vessel on the altar.
