It's easy to set up, light on the CPU, and it works on everything. Here are some other De-Esser plugins that you should check out: Fabfilter De-Esser is probably the perfect De-Esser plugin out there (it can do any type of De-Essing), but you can do De-Essing with other Fabfilter plugins very efficiently, like Pro-Q3 (dynamic bell/shelf), Pro-MB (dynamic bell/shelf), and Pro-C2 (compressor with sidechain input). Renaissance DeEsser by Waves is surely the De-Esser I use the most (dynamic bell/shelf), but you can also check out Sibilance (dynamic bell/shelf I guess...?): I got it for free during a giveaway and I'm blown away by it. Waves standard DeEsser is also a great tool: worth checking it out. Analog Obsession has a De-Esser called Loades which is free (not sure what type of De-Esser is...), but I don't particularly love it, and there's also T-De-Esser by Techivation that is free (compressor with sidechain input). Chris Lord Alge is probably the most famous mix engineer in the world and his vision changed how music sound nowadays. I see a lot of excitement about mastering, but at the same time I see a lot of confusion. What is "MASTERING"? The only right way to put it is: "mastering is the process that makes a song ready for the market". Since the loudness-war is a thing, mastering is always associated with loudness/limiting/saturation and a lot of people start stressing about it. But mastering is not a combination of effects, it's a goal: getting your song ready for the music industry. If your track just needs a little boost in volume to sound like a record, that's mastering. If your track needs to be brighter, more stereo, more dynamic, or more squashed, that's mastering. My patch is an all-in-one tool that follows more or less my mastering chain. You can find a FabFilter Pro-MB in the majority of my masters, and my Multiband Compressor is inspired by that. You'll also find an EQ with wide bands, inspired by the Sontec 432 Mastering EQ (my favorite kind of EQ). A Mastering De-Esser just like the Ozone Spectral Shaper (really underestimated effect!) is there to take care of harshness, but not only that! Parallel saturation has become one of my favorite techniques and you'll be amazed by the one I put in this patch. I do that with a lot of different plugins but one of my favorites is called True Iron (it feels analog!). An EQ for the Side information is always welcome during mastering and a LowPass filter and a HighPass filter can be crucial. A Clipper with a gentle shape and a Hard Limiter finish the chain I set up. I hope you'll have fun with my patch! Spacer is actually one of the very first patches I designed. I edited it a few times though and now here it is. Trackspacer by Wavesfactory is one of my favorite mixing plugins: it sounds good and it's straight to the point. I usually use it to make the vocal or some instrument poke out from the mix a bit (attenuating another instrument) while keeping a natural feel. You can of course re-create this effect manually using a dynamic EQ with an external sidechain function (there are free ones out there, like TDR Nova for example), but the fact that Trackspacer is ready to go as soon as you load it's awesome for the workflow. Also, it's a pretty cheap plugin, I got it for $20 during a sale: it was a steal. My patch keeps the attenuation wide and musical, cause I think that this type of effect shouldn't be surgical and extreme. I just need that 2-3 dB of attenuation when needed, nothing more.
