Freud moved with his family to London in 1938, bringing with him his astonishing collection of 2,500 antique objects as well as his library, furnishings, and world famous psychoanalytic couch, all of which were carefully preserved by his daughter Anna Freud until her death in 1982. Since 1986 the house and its contents have been open to the public as the Freud Museum London. Anna Senkara explored Freud's London home with Freud Museum Director Dr Giuseppe Albano, and saw our temporary exhibition 'Freud's Antiquity' with two of its curators Professor Miriam Leonard and Professor Daniel Orrells. Jay spoke with Marina Maniadaki, Curator of the exhibition, about Sigmund Freud’s first and final visit to Athens in 1904, and his lifelong interest in Greece and antiquity. </video> <video> ‘The hard problem of consciousness’: A lecture by Professor Mark Solms at the Freud Museum London Description: ‘The hard problem of consciousness’ In this lecture, as part of our Freud's 4 pm Sessions series at the Freud Museum, Mark Solms addresses the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness, taking the view that we have made so little progress with this problem because we have been focusing on the wrong sort of consciousness (perception and cognition) and the wrong part of the brain (the cortex). Professor Solms argues that the problem becomes less hard when considered in relation to affect and the brainstem. He also discusses the relevance of two Freudian ideas to the solution of the problem. The event was introduced by Dr Giuseppe Albano, Director of the Freud Museum London. Mark Solms is a psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist. He is Professor in Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town (South Africa), Honorary Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the St Bartholomew’s and Royal London School of Medicine, Director of the Arnold Pfeffer Center for Neuropsychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and Chair of the Research Committee of the International Psychoanalytical Association. He is President of the South African Psychoanalytical Association, Associate Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, Honorary Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society, and Member of the South African Clinical Neuropsychology Association and of the British Neuropsychological Society. He is a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and Honorary Fellow of the American College of Psychoanalysts and of the American College of Psychiatrists. He has won many prestigious awards, including the Sigourney Award. He has authored a multitude of chapters, articles and books including The Neuropsychology of Dreams (1997), and was founding editor of the journal Neuropsychoanalysis. Freud Museum Director Giuseppe Albano and Professor Mark Solms, together with representatives from the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Rowman & Littlefield celebrated the publication of the Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud – a ground-breaking update on the Standard Edition first published 60 years ago, which followed the Hogarth Press first publishing Freud’s work in 1924. On 20 June 2024 we had the honour and pleasure of welcoming to the Museum some very special guests: the Editor of the Revised Standard Edition and our long-standing supporter, Professor Mark Solms and our friends from the Institute of Psychoanalysis, the British Psychoanalytical Society and Rowman & Littlefield, who co-published the work. Professor Solms treated a very packed room to a thought-provoking talk addressing the ‘the hard problem’ of consciousness, captivating the audience and opening a passionate discussion which followed his presentation. After the talk, our Director, Dr Giuseppe Albano, had the pleasure of accepting the generous donation of the new 24-volume set, which has now joined the Freud Museum Library. Dr Albano says: “We are thrilled to be gifted this outstanding collection, which offers new insights and observations into Freud’s theories for our modern audience. We can’t wait for our visitors and scholars to browse through this revision and soak up the nuances of Freud’s theories through a contemporary, neurological lens of understanding.” Dr Vic Sedlak, President of the British Psychoanalytical Society said that Freud’s impact “endures in the practice of psychoanalysis today” and helped us to “understand artistic expression, the operation of families, groups and societies, and even extreme forms of human behaviour such as war and criminal acts.” </video> <video> Freud Museum Shop Christmas Ad 2022 Description: Our annual Freud Museum Shop Christmas video has arrived! In this year’s instalment, our hero, the Little Thinker - inspired by the great Lucian Freud and the divine Eros - sets out to paint an accurate self-portrait. He asks our collection of replicas for their approval and after a couple of mishaps - having tried to imitate other artists' depictions of himself - he turns the attention inwards towards his own mirror reflection. Now, fully in touch with his innermost creative desire, he finally succeeds and is applauded by his excited friends.
