The closer we get to Lunar New Year’s Eve, the more cakes we make. We also make radish cakes. Sometimes we stay up until midnight making them. The shop fills with the sweet smell of freshly-steamed red bean rice cakes every year, as the cakes have to air-dry for 36 hours before they are sold. Work moves at full speed in the kitchen and in the store, as the rice cakes fly off the shelves. Now in its third generation, the whole family comes together to help out and pass the tradition on. The southern city has several "temples in a temple" that are particularly ornate. Longshui Hualong Temple in Gushan District was rebuilt a few years ago. To preserve the original structure, it was moved inside the new one in an extensive engineering project. There’s also Yicheng Tang Guandi Temple, where a new structure was built on top of the old one. This is a special kind of “temple in a temple.” It’s unusual to find this typeof “temple within a temple.” When Kaohsiung’s Longshui Hualong Temple was rebuilt a few years ago, the old building was moved inside the new structure. Lee Mao-lin LongshuiHualong Temple We started getting a lot of worshippers. The protector deity told us to keep the old temple if possible. When construction was done, we moved it back to its original spot. The temple shows its more than 80 years of history. It was rebuilt after a long period of disrepair, but since it’s in the city center where space is scarce, it had to be rebuilt on the same site. Its unique combination of the old and new also draws devotees from other cities. Devotee Everything here is very old. The exterior has a wonderful design for a temple. I think it’s cool to enclose it like this. Yicheng Tang Guandi Temple in Kaohsiung’s Lingya District is similar. Management says the special design was created according to the wishes of the Holy Emperor Guan. It’s as busy as ever, but this “temple in a temple” is a little different. Worshippers can’t go inside. Only the staff can enter to place offerings, giving it an air of mystery. Residents of Puli Township in Nantou are getting creative with their farm waste! The township is Taiwan’s No. 1 producer of Manchurian wild rice, which is best known as a delicious root, a bit like fresh bamboo shoots. The township produces tons of waste from the wild rice husks every year. But now, an art class is showing locals and visitors alike how to turn those inedible roots into beautiful, eco-friendly fans. Nantou’s Puli Township is the top producer of Manchurian wild rice in Taiwan. Every hectare of wild rice fields produces an estimated 7-10 tons of agricultural waste. It’s difficult to compost or recycle. Members of the local Yixin Community have got creative and started a wild rice reuse class. They’re using wild rice husks, which are potential waste, to create fans, capitalizing on their similarity to corrugated cardboard. The husks are dried out, so their firmness softens a little. The village head shows class members how to tie them up with a wire, and paint them, to create a beautiful fan for cooling off in summer. Resident Yixin Community We created an event for everyone, so students and kids could come and practice and see how to make a fan like this. We want to promote Hakka village culture, which uses Manchurian wild rice, and so then we’re using it to create these wild rice lucky fans. The fans are easy to make, and provide an afternoon of fun and creativity. It’s a new life for this farm waste, which no longer needs go into an incinerator. The community welcomes visitors and tourists to drop into the class as well, to enjoy a connection with the local farming culture, and take home a beautiful green memento. The KMT and TPP teamed up to reduce the budget by 6%, slashing some NT$207.5 billion from the original proposal of the Executive Yuan. President Lai Ching-te is urging opposition parties to reconsider their actions, saying that the cuts will disrupt normal government operations, resulting in suspensions of services. Protesters tie yellow ribbons saying “This is my Taiwan” on the fence of the Legislative Yuan. On social media, a poster said that, though KMT and TPP can block discussions in the legislature and build a wall to keep people out, the voices of the people can’t be drowned out. People are complaining about the KMT and TPP’s budget cuts, calling them reckless. DPP caucus whip Ker Chien-ming has gone a step further, saying the cuts are illegal and unconstitutional. The cabinet had initially proposed a budget of NT$3.1 trillion for 2025. In the legislative review, however, the KMT and TPP froze and slashed an unprecedented NT$207.5 billion off the proposal. That’s a reduction of about 6%. President Lai Ching-te has said the cuts and the impact they will have on the government are unprecedented. He says that, in the original NT$3.1 trillion proposal, NT$1.8 trillion was destined for statutory mandatory expenditures and general subsidies. That means that the cuts slashed away some 35% of the remaining NT$1.3 trillion. Lai added that the impact would be huge, drawing a comparison between the government and a private company, saying that no company would be able to maintain operations after a 35% cut to its budget and funding. He said he will ask the Executive Yuan to compile a list of services that may be suspended and other difficulties and make the matter be known to the public. He also asked opposition parties to reconsider their actions, so that the country can resume normal operations. Based on the trends of the Japanese yen, the market thinks that the chances of an interest rate hike are quite high. From previous experience, higher interest rates result in the Japanese yen appreciating, and losses in the stock market. Over the Year of the Dragon, Taiwan shares gained 5,429 points or 30%. The market’s value now stands at NT$75.52 trillion, an increase of more than NT$18 trillion from the Year of the Rabbit. Averaged out, each investor gained some NT$1.37 million. But that doesn’t paint the full picture. Most of those gains were made by investors in TSMC. Deducting TSMC’s NT$12.67 trillion, each investor gained a humbler but still respectable NT$400,000. The precious view of cloth drying in the sun is caught for perpetuity. This shot won a gold medal at the Tokyo International Foto Awards. The man behind the camera is Tzeng Chin-fa, who has been practicing photography for 10 years. Tzeng Chin-fa Photographer You want it to be unique. That will catch the attention of the contest judges. You want to express human emotions through the photo, to resonate with people. Tzeng began his photography career at 50. A seamstress sits at her machine, her brow knit, making each stitch perfect. Her tender expression shows the love in her work: she’s making clothes for her family. More than 100 of them have been evacuated, after being deemed unsafe. For now, locals have been sheltered at hotels and a local activity center. The concrete has cracked off the brick, and some parts have collapsed. These row houses on Zhongxing Road in Nanxi have all been cordoned off due to heavy damage from the quake. Inside, furniture and appliances lie on the floor, topped with broken tiles. The residents are distraught. The structural integrity of their houses has been compromised and they can’t go back home. The victims show reporters where they were injured. Thinking back on the quake is enough to make them uneasy. With no home to go back to, they’ll be staying at a temporary shelter for now, where charities are offering free meals, clothes and daily necessities. A brown sugar mantou packed with raisins and cranberries. More than 1,000 buns were delivered in the early morning to serve as breakfast for the victims. They come from a bakery in Yongkang District run by a husband and wife who started work in the wee hours of the night. We were up until almost 5 a.m. and we brought them over. Ho Jung-chang Nanxi District head There are currently 42 people in shelters in Nanxi District. They are mostly at the Wenkang Kitchen. Tainan has quickly rehoused the residents left without homes in temporary shelters. Victims say they hope the aftershocks subside soon to at least spend the Lunar New Year in peace. It has also frozen 30% of funds allocated to the operations of industrial parks for drones, and a freeze to 50% of the funding for a future indigenous defense submarine fleet that will come after a prototype that’s in development. Prosecutors say the poisoning was caused by a pack of noodles that were left unrefrigerated under a kitchen counter for more than 63 hours. The hot and humid conditions in the kitchen caused bacteria to thrive and produce bongkrek acid, which is highly toxic to humans. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of more than four years for the Polam Kopitiam franchise owner. Last March, a food poisoning cluster caused by bongkrek acid killed six people who had dined at a Polam Kopitiam restaurant branch in Taipei’s Xinyi District. The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office formally indicted five people, including franchise owner Li Fang-hsuan, for negligence causing death. Kao Yi-shu Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office Five defendants surnamed Lee, Wang, Chou, Juan and Hu have been indicted with negligence causing harm to human health, negligence causing death and negligence causing injury. The quake struck at 17 minutes past midnight, at a depth of 9.7 kilometers in Dapu Township in Chiayi. Seismologists say it is the strongest quake to have hit the area in 50 years. Heavy damage such as building collapses has been reported in Dapu as well as Tainan’s Nanxi District. The chandelier swings violently, as a pet dog barks loudly. At 17 minutes past midnight on Tuesday, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Dapu in Chiayi. At the epicenter, its intensity measured a Lower 6. Over in Nanxi in Tainan and Jiaxian in Kaohsiung, the intensity was a Lower 5. The shaking continued through the night. Wu Chien-fu Seismological Center There were aftershocks all the way until 9:30 in the morning. We recorded 15 felt quakes and 40 local tremors. That makes a total of 55. Last September, Taiwan modified its earthquake early warning system so that it would trigger only during earthquakes with predicted magnitudes of at least 6.5, with alerts sent to areas expected to register an intensity of at least 3. Tuesday’s quake was the first to meet the threshold since. The quake caused severe damage in Tainan’s Nanxi District, where more than 10 houses collapsed.
