Richard has over 10 years of experience with transportation, site development, instrumentation/monitoring, and landslide remediation projects. Richard has BS and M.Eng. in Civil Engineering degrees from the University of Louisville, is a licensed/registered Professional Engineer in Kentucky and Ohio, and currently serves as the Vice President of the Northern Kentucky Chapter of National Society of Professional Engineers. Darrin Beckett has a BSCE from the University of Kentucky and an MSCE from Purdue University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky. Darrin retired from KYTC with 30 years of service and has been with Terracon since October 2023. He has worked as a geotechnical engineer with experience on several major river and lake crossing bridges and anchored earth retaining structures. David Westendorf is a Principal & Group Manager in Terracon Cincinnati office and the Geotechnical Lead for the Brent Spence Bridge Quality Assurance Manager/Owner’s Representative Team. He has 18 years of experience including the river crossing geotechnical study in 2010 and is currently the geotechnical design lead on the northern phases of the project. David has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Toledo and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. Our second in the series will be presented Thursday, November 21, at 2pm ET. Mike Kalinski of the Unviersity of Kentucky will present Ohio River Valley seismicity. Seismic hazard assessment involves calculation of the response of a layered soil/rock site to earthquake strong ground motion. The Ohio River valley is in close proximity to the New Madrid and Wabash Valley Seismic Zones and is subject to potentially destructive earthquake shaking, so seismic hazard assessment and site response analysis is necessary to properly design safe structures and systems. The presentation will cover the current state of practice for seismic hazard assessment and site response analysis to provide guidance for performing similar investigations at typical sites in the Ohio River Valley. Michael E. Kalinski has over 40 years of experience in the geosciences and education field as a geologist, geophysicist, engineer and professor. Kalinski earned his B.Sc. in Geophysical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1985. From 1986 to 1991, he worked as an exploration geophysicist for Tenneco Oil in Lafayette, Louisiana and Shell Oil in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1992 until 1998, where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering. After earning his Ph.D., he spent one year at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute in Oslo as a research fellow and two years with GeoSyntec Consultants in Huntington Beach, California as an engineering geophysicist and geotechnical engineer. Kalinski joined the University of Kentucky Department of Civil Engineering in 2002 where he currently holds the rank of Professor. His research interests include engineering geophysics, geotechnical earthquake engineering, soil dynamics, landfill geotechnology and humanitarian engineering. Doctor Kalinski teaches an undergraduate course in soil mechanics and graduate courses in foundation design, landfill design, geotechnical earthquake engineering and dam design.
