Channel Title: Hardly Moving Productions Channel Description: A do-it-yourself (DIY) channel for auto repair enthusiasts covering various domestic and import vehicles. I started as a teenage shade tree auto repair novice and enlisted in the Marine Corps to train as a 2nd echelon motor transport mechanic (3521 MOS). Common tune ups and repairs such as suspension, steering, cooling, air conditioning, ignition, brakes, engine and transmission components and general preventative maintenance (PM), etc. <video> Hyundai Elantra / Kia Forte Transmission & Radiator Installation - Part 2 Description: Part 1 of our last video ( https://youtu.be/UNCAz-HhAqk ) showed how I removed the transmission and radiator on a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. Installation of a new radiator and donor transmission obtained from a salvage yard is illustrated in this video. The most difficult part in the installation is aligning the transmission's mounting holes with the engine and ensuring the engine flex plate pilot pin is in the transmission's torque converter. In part 1, I could not remove the passenger side cv axle out of the transmission. Apparently the CV bearing cup output shaft was rust stuck in the transmission. I detached the bearing cup housing dust boot to remove the axle. After the transmission was removed from the engine compartment, I used a slide hammer with an attached cv axle removal tool to pull the cv bearing cup housing from the transmission. As shown in the beginning of the video, when the cv cup finally released its tension, you can see a puff of rust smoke coming out of the output shaft hole! I then reattached the axle bearing to the cv bearing cup using a new boot band clamp. The drain-and-fill ATF capacity is 4.2 quarts. I initially poured 5 quarts to compensate for the ATF lines and new radiator. After doing a test drive, the up shifts were smooth but the down shifts a little jerky. The transmission fluid level was later checked by removing the plastic side fill port plug. I pumped in an addition quart of ATF until fluid began dripping out of the port. So this donor transmission wound up taking 6 quarts of ATF ... basically a 85% fluid exchange. After around 100 miles of driving, the down and up shifts became very smooth ... almost unnoticeable under light acceleration. This donor transmission obtained from a local auto salvage yard turned out to be a great deal! $130. If the trans after installation was no good, I was ready to return it and try with another trans. But fortunately, this trans turned out perfect! The inner grease boot had split and leaked out grease leading to bearing wear; hence, installing a new boot and repacking grease was not a viable long term solution. A new CV axle made by Cardone was selected as an axle replacement. A 12 point 30 mm nut is used by Lexus to hold the axle to the wheel hub. To remove this nut, you'll need a 12 point socket in lieu of a 6 point. A 6 point cannot be substituted for a 12 point; it just won't fit. The center bearing of the split axle is support to the engine block via a "bearing carrier". Rust tends to build up over time where the center bearing slides into the bearing carrier. Apply a generous amount of penetrating oil on the bearing carrier and give it around 24 hours to do its job. The center bearing should then be able to slide out without much resistance. If it stills stays frozen in the bearing carrier, you can use a long punch tool and hammer to push it out. When pulling the axle out of the transmission some transmission fluid may leak out. Whatever amount that comes out can be replenished via the ATF dip stick tube. Since the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) could not be cooled via the radiator, the excess heat build up combined with the degraded transmission fluid caused the transmission's clutch discs to wear out. The symptoms were when at a dead stop, the car's rpm would shoot up beyond 3,000 with little to no acceleration. A used replacement transmission was obtained at a local salvage yard (PullAPart) in Memphis, TN. The donor vehicle previously had the engine removed with the transmission laying on the ground with one cv axle attached. It took my partner and myself less than 10 minutes to load the 150 lbs transmission on a wheel cart. The total cost of this donor transmission was $160 including tax and a core exchange fee. The $30 core exchange fee was refunded when I turned in my defective transmission. Just a word of caution; I had no idea on the condition of the transmission when I made the purchase. That's the chance you take not knowing the mileage and condition of the car before it hit the yard. But at least the the sale came with a 30 days return warranty. I watched a few videos of people replacing transmissions on FWD (front wheel drive) cars. They would raise the front end of the car high off the ground, detach and drop the transmission onto a hydraulic jack and slowly angle it out through the wheel well. It looked like they were really struggling. I decided to take a different approach. Since I was going the replace the radiator, I pulled off the car's front end (around a 20 minute effort) and pulled the transmission out by letting it drop a few inches and pulled forward using an engine hoist. By removing the front end, access to the engine to transmission mounting bolts and the various mechanical and electrical components was easy. P0300 is random cylinder misfire (meaning more than one cylinder) and P0301 and P0302 being cylinders 1 and 2 respectively. I started by assuming its an ignition problem; either spark plugs and/or coil packs. If a spark plug or coil pack replacement doesn't fix the problem, then I figured it's a inadequate fuel delivery problem (i.e. the fuel injectors). A clogged fuel filter or a weak or faulty fuel pump would make all the cylinders misfire. After replacing the spark plugs, the misfire stopped on cylinder 2 but continued on cylinder 1. I then swapped the coil pack in cylinder 1 with cylinder 4. The misfire continued on cylinder 1 so I figured it was potentially a fuel injector problem. I then swapped cylinder 1's fuel injector with cylinder 4. Low and behold; cylinder 4 misfired while cylinder 1 ran normally. Cylinder 4's injector was replaced with a new one and the problem disappeared. Engine now runs fine. Description: If you need to add coolant to your car and want to save some money, use universal coolant concentrate mixed with food dye which is about half the price of matching color vehicle specific coolant. Mixing food coloring dye to match the color is simply and easy. Universal coolant has a pale yellow tint and can have it's color matched to the original equipment manufacturer or OEM coolant by adding food dye. For example, red and pink for Toyota, green for Hyundai, orange for Ford and blue for Honda. All coolants are made of ethylene glycol using organic acid technology or OAT which is good for over 100,000 and 5 years. Basic additives are add to prevent corrosion of aluminum, iron and steel. From what I've experienced working on various makes/models of late model cars, there have been no premature coolant leaks, corrosion and seal damage using universal coolant.
