It’s amazing how much can change in just a few years. ❤️‍🩹 The doctors that told me I’d never be able to climb again were wrong! #healingispossible </video> <video> Healing Was Possible For Me (Even When Doctors Said It Wasn't) Description: For so long, it felt like my years of being chronically ill were “lost time”. But they really weren’t at all. God was working in me every step of the way. I have come to a place where I feel deeply grateful for everything we went through. Chronic illness was a part of my story for a reason and I feel very blessed that I’m now able to encourage others that are facing a similar path. 🫶🏻 Something I always like to emphasize is that my story isn’t unique. Our bodies were designed to heal, even from the worst of places. I’ve seen this healing in too many people to stay silent. To those of you in a dark place right now, keep going. Modern medicine tends to shine in acute and life-threatening situations. It has helped save several of my family members. Words can’t express the gratitude I feel for those that have cared so well for my loved ones. 🫶🏻 It is possible to hold that gratitude while also believing modern medicine is failing most chronically ill people (in a massive way). Unfortunately, for those with chronic illness, modern medicine often does more harm than good—even if it isn’t intentional. This was certainly the case for me and so many others. That’s why I share my story. Regardless, I’m still grateful for the doctors that did their best to help me, even though they did not offer what I needed to heal. One crucial thing I believe modern medicine tends to miss is that our bodies were designed to heal, even from the worst of places. Things like nervous system work, trauma healing, proper nutrition, time in nature, and other lifestyle changes are incredibly powerful for healing but do give much opportunity for profit. That being said, most doctors and medical workers do really want to help people and that’s a beautiful thing. There certainly is a place for modern medicine. P.S. Our bodies truly are designed to heal. ❤️‍🩹 Keep in mind, healing usually doesn’t happen as quickly as we want it to. And that’s okay. True healing actually happens in slowness as we consistently signal safety to our nervous system. Recovery from chronic illness has been one of the most difficult and best experiences of my life. I’ve been on the upward trajectory for almost four years now. My healing was gradual and certainly not linear. For me, letting go of a timeline and trusting my body would heal in the right timing for me really accelerated my healing. If you had told me years ago I would be healthy and pregnant with our first child, I’m not sure I would have believed it. But here we are. My illness was completely debilitating and I was regularly having symptoms that felt like true emergencies. I was doing everything my doctors recommended, but continued to decline. Like most people with chronic illness, my nervous system was stuck in a survival crisis state. This is something that happens subconsciously as our brains way of trying to protect us. When the nervous system isn’t functioning properly, *any* system of the body can be impacted (digestive system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, immune system, etc). Keep in mind, the nervous system is the control center of the body and affects every aspect of our health and well-being. Thankfully, our bodies were designed with an incredible innate ability to heal. We can learn to regulate our nervous system and rewire our brain to allow for healing. ❤️‍🩹 Continually signaling safety to your brain is key. Once your brain knows you are safe, your nervous system can shift into a parasympathetic state where healing can start to take place. Healing takes time and isn’t always easy. But it’s worth it and absolutely possible. 🫶🏻✨ P.S. Some of my favorite ways to signal safety to my brain include: visualizing myself healthy/joyful, somatic practices, eating nourishing animal-based foods, nasal breathing, laughter, sunlight, time in nature, slowing down my thoughts, letting go of limiting beliefs, singing/dancing, and noticing glimmers. 🥰 Follow along for more nervous system regulation info & tips. ✨ #healingispossible </video> <video> My signs of nervous system dysfunction Description: For years, I was very sick and was diagnosed with ehlers-danlos syndrome, dysautonomia, intracranial hypertension, chronic lyme disease, and more. At my worst, I was essentially bed bound with no quality of life. We traveled to top doctors for my conditions and tried many of the treatments they had to offer, but I continued getting sicker and sicker. Not once did they suggest I should consider brain retraining or an animal-based diet, but in the end, those were the most impactful things for my recovery. When I realized that the nervous system is the control center of the body, it all started making sense to me. Our nervous system state affects the function of every system, organ, and cell in our bodies. Nervous system dysfunction can lead to very severe and real chronic illness. When stuck in survival mode, our ability to self heal is very limited. This is why learning to regulate the nervous system is so impactful for those with chronic illness. Nervous system dysfunction is something that happens subconsciously, by no fault of your own. It can be triggered by infections, mold, emotional or physical trauma, poor nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and more. Typically it isn’t just one thing but rather, “the straw the breaks the camels back”. To heal the nervous system, it matters less about what triggered the dysfunction in the first place and more about consistently signaling safety to your brain. This will help your nervous system come out of survival mode so your body can do what it was designed to do—which is to heal. It’s all about building resiliency. ❤️‍🩹 #healingispossible P.S. Sometimes it can be easy to magnify our own trials, and downplay what others are going through. An important lesson I learned during my time with chronic illness is that comparison never leads anywhere good. We never really know what someone else is going through. God called us to “bear each others burdens”. If someone is going through something difficult, it matters. There is no need to judge or compare our situation to theirs. When we come to Jesus in times of trouble, He doesn’t say “I’ve been through much more than you have, it could be worse”. He sits with us in our grief. He mourns with us and shows us how much He cares. That is what we are called to do with others. I feel so grateful to have people in my life that rejoice with me in my victories and mourn with me in my grief. That is Christlike love. ❤️‍🩹 P.S. That my chronic illnesses were genetic and incurable. But they were wrong. I’m no longer chronically ill. I went from essentially bedbound to living a healthy, normal life. Healing hasn’t been easy or quick, in fact it’s been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever faced. But it has been the good kind of hard. A huge turning point in my journey was when I stopped desperately relying on doctors to fix me and started to believe I could recover. It took a while for me to fully believe I could heal. So I started with a curiosity. I asked myself: “What if I COULD get better” “What if my doctors were wrong?” “What if my body was designed to heal?” “What if that recovery story I listened to could be my story too?” Eventually that curiousity turned into belief. The most impactful things for my healing have been nervous system regulation and an animal-based diet. I have lots of posts sharing about my experience and all the things I’ve been doing to heal.❤️‍🩹 If you’re in a difficult place right now, keep going. It can get better. Taking healing into your own hands is so empowering. This doesn’t mean certain providers or treatments can’t be supportive (they absolutely can). I wanted to add this mindset shift certainly isn’t easy to adapt, especially if you’re really struggling with chronic illness. It doesn’t have to happen overnight.
