Description: At only 16 years old, Michael McPike was tragically hit by a motor vehicle, suffering a traumatic brain injury, multiple injuries to his spine, leg fractures, nerve injuries, and other complications which left him in a coma. When he entered Helen Hayes Hospital for physical rehabilitation, he was still in a minimally unconscious state, presented with quadriplegia, and was unable to breathe or eat on his own. Over the course of 9 months, however, Mikey’s recovery was extraordinary—he relearned to walk, talk, and care for himself, and even took and passed a NYS Regents exam while in inpatient care! She arrived at Helen Hayes Hospital dependent on a wheelchair and needing assistance with most tasks. Her early days at HHH were marked with much effort to relearn to speak in simple sentences and accomplish tasks with only one arm, but through hard work and determination, she exceeded all expectations. She was discharged walked with only a brace and a cane and continued her recovery in outpatient, where she progressed to walking unassisted, speaking with confidence, and regaining her independence. Profound weakness in his lower extremities left him unable to walk and he relied on a wheelchair for mobility. Despite any uncertainty regarding his ability to regain strength in his legs, Mark embarked on his rehab journey with unrelenting motivation, pushing hard to regain his independence and resume his role as a stay-at-home dad to his four children. He made great strides and was discharged from Helen Hayes Hospital with the ability to transfer from his wheelchair and take steps with the help of his orthoses and rolling walker. As he emerged from that coma and began physical rehabilitation at Helen Hayes Hospital, he had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat, and breathe, all while struggling to remember what had happened to him or where he was. Despite these challenges, Khadeem exhibited tremendous strength and excelled in his rehab program. After 4 months, he was able to regain his independence and walk out of rehab on his own, assisted only by a walker.
