We started our trip in Adelaide, where the full team was assembled from all their different stations in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. He gave us some insight into the details that go into Ironman's best-selling gear for the venerable 70-Series Landcruiser. For our rebirthed 2017 LC76, we have the Ironman Premium Bull Bar which uses 3mm plate steel and 60.3mm tube for its hoops. It has three aerial or sandflag mounts which Justin is making the best use of. The Premium Bull Bar retails for $2,098. Ironman sells a patch loom for $170 to make it plug-and-play with your existing lighting, we’d highly recommend it as it takes the hassle out of fitting a bar. Down the sides of the 76 are Premium Side Rails made with the same tough 60.3mm tube. They meet at the Side Steps which are chassis-mounted and designed to take hammering offroad. With its massive fuel reserves (310L), extra spares, RTT, fridge, and power system plus the huge wheels and tyres, the 76 can sit well over 3,500kg on a typical trip so it needed a GVM upgrade. The 76 is now rated to a maximum of 3,900kg a jump of 600kg through the use of the kit TOY062CKP which carries an RRP of $3,085. It is money well spent. The kit is made up of constant-load front springs designed to offset an additional 50-100kg while offering a lift of about 50mm. In the rear is the same idea, constant load leaf springs designed to take an additional 300-600kg while offering a small lift. The shocks are Ironman's best in the Foam Cell Pros. They have an impressive 45mm diameter piston and 3mm thick external tube making them exceptionally durable. By reconditioning the engine, gearbox, and other components, we aim to extend the vehicle’s life for another 10-20 years. But how do you know it’s time for a rebuild? ### Signs Your 1VD Needs Attention Several symptoms can indicate it's time for reconditioning: - **Injector Knock**: A knocking sound often means injectors need replacement. - **Oil Leaks**: Excessive leaks may justify removing and disassembling the engine to replace key internals. - **Blow-by**: Exhaust gases escaping past piston rings can indicate crankcase pressure and contamination. - **Worn Bearings**: Bearings that connect conrods to the crankshaft wear down over time, leading to serious issues. - **Piston Slap**: Worn pistons make a slapping noise, suggesting the engine is due for reconditioning. ### Steps in the Reconditioning Process Once a rebuild is deemed necessary, reconditioning involves dismantling, inspecting, and reassembling components, often with genuine replacements. 1. **Oil Sampling** Oil analysis can reveal wear patterns and potential internal issues. This winch is maintenance-free and features a wireless controller, offering reliability and ease of use. Paired with this are Nighthawk 9-inch VCT driving lights that allow for customisable lighting, from a cool white to a warmer yellow for alpine conditions. For communications and connectivity, Juzzie’s Cruiser is now equipped with GME aerials for UHF, AM/FM, and mobile signal boosting with a Cel-Fi Go, ensuring solid connectivity—even in remote areas. Moving to the wheels and tyres, Bob Jane T-Mart supplied 17x9 Monster Ammo alloy wheels with a high 1500kg load rating essential for a GVM-upgraded vehicle like this. They’re paired with Radar Renegade mud-terrain tyres featuring aggressive tread patterns, promising excellent performance off-road. While we’re excited about their durability in tough conditions, we’ll also be monitoring how they handle on-road wear and noise. At the back, the existing Kaymar rear bar has been refreshed and in the back has gone MSA’s custom-fit drawer system. These drawers are ADR compliant, designed to keep gear secure in the event of an accident, and fitted with lights for easy access. MSA’s signature blue colour dominates the rear interior, and Juzzie has added a cage around the MyCoolman The Explorer 53L fridge for extra security and convenience. On the top of the drawers are a pair of REDARC-supplied 100Ah lithium batteries charged by REDARC’s Manager30 charger, a hugely capable unit that can charge the batteries from AC, the Cruiser’s alternator and from solar at up to 30A. All that power is there to help feed the team on the road with the bulk of the power needed to run an induction hotplate via a 2000-watt inverter. The power system is monitored and controlled by REDARC’s TVMS Rogue total vehicle management system, with screens for monitoring and control mounted both in the back and upfront. Inside the Cruiser Inside, Juzzie has added several practical enhancements, including an iPad mount for navigation using 4x4 Explorer and a separate Hema HX-2+ Navigator. He’s also got a Zoleo satellite communicator for added security, with functions as a personal locator beacon if needed. Comfort was a priority, so Juzzie refurbished his Recaro seats, which had seen well over 200,000 km before their overhaul. He’ll be putting them to the test again, but the improvement over factory seating is already clear. Under the Hood The engine bay received meticulous attention, with a complete overhaul of the 1VD turbo-diesel, now featuring a GTurbo for enhanced boost and Denso injectors supplied by Cornell Diesel Systems, expected to last at least another 150,000 km. The clean, tuned engine will likely deliver its best performance yet, thanks to the work of Geoff and the team at the 4WD Workshop, who also reconditioned the gearbox and clutch. What’s Next?
