Profile picture: Joel Field Banner art copyright: Hyrotrioskjan. <video> Porbeagle & Salmon Sharks - The Underrated Great White Relatives Description: Great white sharks are as we all know are among the most iconic of not just sharks, but ocean-going animals, having a reputation as an apex predator that has led to fear-mongering about them that has led to them and other sharks being demonized, and this is something that is completely unjust. As animals just living their lives, and also being key in terms of the health of the ecosystems they live in, they are very important to the health of our oceans, and so better conserving and understanding them is critical. Great whites are as just mentioned among the most well-known of their group, if not the most well known, and so are great for advocacy. This does however mean that many of their relatives can oftentimes be sidelined, and so, for this year's Shark Week, I’ll be aiming to put some focus onto some of their close relatives. For this video, I’ll be covering two of these species, being the Porbeagle and Salmon sharks, which are both very interesting, and have some amazing behavioural and anatomical features that make them truly remarkable, and worthy of just as much attention. They first originated early on in the Cretaceous, and during this period of time, especially in the mid-cretaceous, diversified immensely, and while their diversity has waned a good deal since this time, a topic I’d like to cover itself down the line, they do still remain a very diverse group species to species at least. Back at their peak levels of evolutionary radiation, Haimirichia amonensis, the shark I’ll be talking about in this video, is one of the most fascinating of them all, as their combination of traits, as well as the important relevance they have in terms of understanding how extinct sharks should be approached in their reconstruction. This mostly comes down to subtropical gyres, which with their swirling expanse of nutrient-starved seawater, means that the growth of many key organisms like phytoplankton and zooplankton, which has further implications for larger marine life, including sharks. Still though, many animals still frequent these regions, and one of the most interesting and in many ways wacky of them all are a group of sharks, being the group I’ll be talking about today, the Thresher sharks. There are three currently known species of them, the bigeye, common and pelagic threshers, with some being more well known than others, but are all very fascinating and very cool in their own ways. There were however also animals that today don’t have any modern analogues, not to say those mentioned previously don’t have their own quirks of their own, but by comparison, so many of these animals were really something different. Among them were animals in the family of felidae, the cats, which back during the pleistocene, had some very impressive members. Sabre-toothed cats were among them, and one of which, the subject of today’s video, Homotherium has become all the more well-understood through a recent discovery which has shaken the scientific community. Vote them for 2024 Bird of the Year! Description: It's that time of year once again, though a little earlier this time around. The annual New Zealand Bird of the Year competition has come around yet again, and I've been campaigning for the Wrybill! They are amazing plovers that wade about rocky riverbed environments, and have one of the coolest adaptations for living in their environment. They are the only species of bird in the world to have a laterally-curved bill which always does so to the right, which they use to pry out insect from stones most effectively. Alongside that, they are also brilliantly territorial and loving parents, alongside making very cute sounds, and having eggs that blend in exceptionally well to their rocky habitat. Unfortunately, they only number just over 5,000 birds (less than a small town!), and are still very much vulnerable to both introduced predators like stoats, as well as from habitat degradation and more frequent and temperamental flooding which further restricts them and their survivability. In spite of all of this, they remain fairly unknown, but I know that with all of this communities support, we can give them the win they so rightfully deserve, and we could well pull off an upset with how close this competition often is! You can vote as long as you have a valid email account, so even if you're outside of New Zealand and anywhere else in the world, you can still vote! Make your voice heard! Voting closes at 5PM NZT on the 15th of September, so get in quick! :) You can also vote for another four New Zealand birds of your choosing as well, since the competition operates under an STV (single transferable vote) system. Atlantic bluefins for example can weigh around 250 kilograms, though the largest of them can get up to an astonishing 684 kilograms, bigger than a typical cow, and nearly as much as 10 whole people. Of course, Tuna aren’t just limited to these massive animals, as there are also a range of smaller and also very interesting species that often go uncommented on. So, to rectify that, I’ll be covering all of the known Tuna species here in this video so all of this information is in one place, and with around 17 in total to go over, there’s a lot of ground, or in this case, water, to cover.
